Excerpt: ...on the ' tiple, 't as I have always done, your nina said your bounty ought to get me a place in the opera-house, and have one enemy less near her person. Alas, child, I cannot help it; I can no more bear it; the child knows my heart." As the scene was becoming too pathetic for the place, Don Santiago urged Manuel to be consoled, adding, that he would remind the lady of his good services, and do away any unfavorable impression she might have respecting him. Manual appeared relieved, and walked to his horses, carefully balancing his body as he went along. We followed, jumped into the volante, and hurried from the tavern. The negro spends nearly all the money he can get in this way. t A favorite negro instrument. On arriving at the estate, we stopped at the dwelling-house, which, as the don was not expected, was far from being properly prepared to receive us. He apologized, and explained that he preferred all these inconveniences to giving previous notice of his coming. He calculated too much, perhaps, on the idea of taking his operarios, or workmen, by surprise; and observed to me that he once found all the white persons employed on his plantation gone to a ball, and the negroes left by themselves; and that an estate was not unfrequently made the rendezvous of gamblers. We walked over to the square of buildings, which are generally placed in the centre of the plantation, and found them in the invariable respective order observed here: the mill and the boiling-house in the west part, the baggage-house still farther west, and the purging-house and drying-drawer in the north, so that the latter may receive the rays of the sun from morning till night. During our short absence the house had been comfortably arranged. We found two or three black...

Book Cuba Winner of the Pulitzer Prize

Download or read book Cuba Winner of the Pulitzer Prize written by Ada Ferrer and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2021-09-07 with total page 435 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: WINNER OF THE PULITZER PRIZE IN HISTORY WINNER OF THE LOS ANGELES TIMES BOOK PRIZE IN HISTORY “Full of…lively insights and lucid prose” (The Wall Street Journal) an epic, sweeping history of Cuba and its complex ties to the United States—from before the arrival of Columbus to the present day—written by one of the world’s leading historians of Cuba. In 1961, at the height of the Cold War, the United States severed diplomatic relations with Cuba, where a momentous revolution had taken power three years earlier. For more than half a century, the stand-off continued—through the tenure of ten American presidents and the fifty-year rule of Fidel Castro. His death in 2016, and the retirement of his brother and successor Raúl Castro in 2021, have spurred questions about the country’s future. Meanwhile, politics in Washington—Barack Obama’s opening to the island, Donald Trump’s reversal of that policy, and the election of Joe Biden—have made the relationship between the two nations a subject of debate once more. Now, award-winning historian Ada Ferrer delivers an “important” (The Guardian) and moving chronicle that demands a new reckoning with both the island’s past and its relationship with the United States. Spanning more than five centuries, Cuba: An American History provides us with a front-row seat as we witness the evolution of the modern nation, with its dramatic record of conquest and colonization, of slavery and freedom, of independence and revolutions made and unmade. Along the way, Ferrer explores the sometimes surprising, often troubled intimacy between the two countries, documenting not only the influence of the United States on Cuba but also the many ways the island has been a recurring presence in US affairs. This is a story that will give Americans unexpected insights into the history of their own nation and, in so doing, help them imagine a new relationship with Cuba; “readers will close [this] fascinating book with a sense of hope” (The Economist). Filled with rousing stories and characters, and drawing on more than thirty years of research in Cuba, Spain, and the United States—as well as the author’s own extensive travel to the island over the same period—this is a stunning and monumental account like no other.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Slavery in the Island of Cuba: With Remarks on the Statements of the British Press Relative to the Slave Trade Having been incited by the English Press to answer certain charges utterly void of foundation, directed against the Govern ment of Spain and the Cuban authorities, I have considered it my duty to accept the challenge; but as the question of slavery and its incidents afl'ord very ample scope for discussion, I have considered that it would not be easy to develop my ideas with propriety in separate articles in the newspapers; and hence I have resolved to publish a Memoir, embracing all the requisite data for the illustration of this question in all its phases. Book The Island of Cuba Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Island of Cuba Classic Reprint written by Alexander Von Humboldt and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-11-12 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Island of Cuba That portion of Baron Humboldt's Personal Narrative of his travels with Mons. Bonpland in the equinoctial regions of America, which relates to the Island of Cuba, has been published as a separate work both in the French and Spanish languages; but I believe no complete version has ever been presented in English. The following translation is from an excellent rendering of the original work into Spanish, which modestly gives only the initials of the translator; D. J. B. De V. Y. M. I have been stimulated to undertake this labor by the oft-repeated request that I would state which is the best book on Cuba, and by the fact that a long continued residence in the island, and a study of its condition and resources, have convinced me that Baron Humboldt's work is the best that has been written on the subject. In order to bring the information in this volume as nearly as possible down to the present time, I have added notes, which are placed in brackets in the body of the text, or without signature at the foot of the page, as seemed most conducive to a clear exposition of the present condition of Cuba. The notes of Baron Humboldt have the signature H. Affixed in the following pages. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The 1812 Aponte Rebellion in Cuba and the Struggle against Atlantic Slavery

Download or read book The 1812 Aponte Rebellion in Cuba and the Struggle against Atlantic Slavery written by Matt D. Childs and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2009-01-05 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1812 a series of revolts known collectively as the Aponte Rebellion erupted across the island of Cuba, comprising one of the largest and most important slave insurrections in Caribbean history. Matt Childs provides the first in-depth analysis of the rebellion, situating it in local, colonial, imperial, and Atlantic World contexts. Childs explains how slaves and free people of color responded to the nineteenth-century "sugar boom" in the Spanish colony by planning a rebellion against racial slavery and plantation agriculture. Striking alliances among free people of color and slaves, blacks and mulattoes, Africans and Creoles, and rural and urban populations, rebels were prompted to act by a widespread belief in rumors promising that emancipation was near. Taking further inspiration from the 1791 Haitian Revolution, rebels sought to destroy slavery in Cuba and perhaps even end Spanish rule. By comparing his findings to studies of slave insurrections in Brazil, Haiti, the British Caribbean, and the United States, Childs places the rebellion within the wider story of Atlantic World revolution and political change. The book also features a biographical table, constructed by Childs, of the more than 350 people investigated for their involvement in the rebellion, 34 of whom were executed.

Book excerpt: The politics of slavery and slave trade in nineteenth-century Cuba and Brazil is the subject of this acclaimed study, first published in Brazil in 2010 and now available for the first time in English. Cubans and Brazilians were geographically separate from each other, but they faced common global challenges that unified the way they re-created their slave systems between 1790 and 1850 on a basis completely departed from centuries-old colonial slavery. Here the authors examine the early arguments and strategies in favor of slavery and the slave trade and show how they were affected by the expansion of the global market for tropical goods, the American Revolution, the Haitian Revolution, the collapse of Iberian monarchies, British abolitionism, and the international pressure opposing the transatlantic slave trade. This comprehensive survey contributes to the comparative history of slavery, placing the subject in a global context rather than simply comparing the two societies as isolated units.
