The family of Irvines of Drum climbed from almost obscurity to its becoming one of the most influential families of the northeast of Scotland. Starting with the first laird of Drum, William de Irwyn. He would have been born possibly about 1295 but his date of death is unknown. His son, Alexander, born about 1322 and died about 1381, succeeded his father in the estates as the second laird. The family history goes up to the twenty-sixth laird. The second half of the volume is devoted to the cadet lines which descended from Drum.

Book excerpt: In the summer of 1411, the ageing Donald of Isla, Lord of the Isles, invaded mainland Scotland with a huge, battle-hardened army, only to be fought to a bloody standstill on the plateau of Harlaw, fifteen miles from Aberdeen, a town he had threatened to sack. One of the greatest battles in Scottish history, described by hardened mediaeval chroniclers as 'atrocious', 'Reid Harlaw' left some 3,000 dead and wounded. Dismissed by Scott as a 'Celt v. Saxon' power struggle, it has faded from historical memory, other than in the north-east of Scotland. Written records in Latin, Scots, Gaelic and English are presented in their original form, and with transcriptions and translations. Two major ballads are analysed, one contemporary, and one fabricated over 350 years later - which is still sung. Lowland views dominate, because of the loss and destruction of Highland records, notably those of the Lords of the Isles themselves. The histories themselves fall into two groups - those written at or around the time, and those composed some 300 years later.These later accounts form the basis of most modern descriptions of the battle, but they tend to be romantic and highly imaginative, creating noble order where chaos once existed.

Book excerpt: The Irwin Surname - its Origins, Diaspora and Early Branches Poplarly spelt today as Ervin, Erwin, Irvin, Irvine, Irving, Irwin and Urwin, this surname was used by early Scottish kings (allegedly), the armour-bearer of Robert the Bruce, the author of Rip van Winkle and the Legend of Sleepy Hollow, one of the first two men to attempt to summit Mount Everest, and the eighth man on the moon. The name has been given to towns, rivers and mountains in Scotland, Ireland, USA, Canada, Australia and Antarctica, and even an asteroid. Tradition claims that all those born with the surname and descended from a single ancestor, but DNA tests show that today there are over 40 unrelated branches of the surname. This is the first book to be published that makes a comprehensive record of the traditions, homesteads, heraldry, DNA, early records, chiefs and tartans associated with the surname, and to analyse its origins, spelling, pronunciations and principal migrations. The genealogies of the main branches of the name are refined and updated, including radical re-appraisals of the early Barons of Drum ad Lairds of Bonshaw. In colonial Tanganyika, for example, Africans were said to be captured by these agents of colonialism and hung upside down, their throats cut so their blood drained into huge buckets. In Kampala, the police were said to abduct Africans and keep them in pits, where their blood was sucked. Luise White presents and interprets vampire stories from East and Central Africa as a way of understanding the world as the storytellers did. Using gossip and rumor as historical sources in their own right, she assesses the place of such evidence, oral and written, in historical reconstruction. White conducted more than 130 interviews for this book and did research in Kenya, Uganda, and Zambia. In addition to presenting powerful, vivid stories that Africans told to describe colonial power, the book presents an original epistemological inquiry into the nature of historical truth and memory, and into their relationship to the writing of history.
