Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mikhail Lermontov's A Hero of Our Time has long been acknowledged as one of the finest examples of 19th century Russian fiction and i masterpiece of psychological realism. Yet despite this recognition, there is little critical literature on Lermontov in the English language. A Wicked Irony is intended to fill this gap providing a detailed examination of the novel and a new interpretative approach. Taking in turn each of these stories in A Hero of Our Time, the authors analyse the rhetorical strategies devised by the narrators. In so doing, they determine the nature of the irony running through the novel, and how A Hero of Our Time is one of the most convincing and compelling portraits of psychotic behaviour in any literature.

Book A Hero Of Our Time

Download or read book A Hero Of Our Time written by Mikhail Lermontov and published by Abrams. This book was released on 2009-01-16 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first major Russian novel, A Hero of Our Time was both lauded and reviled upon publication. Its dissipated hero, twenty-five-year-old Pechorin, is a beautiful and magnetic but nihilistic young army officer, bored by life and indifferent to his many sexual conquests. Chronicling his unforgettable adventures in the Caucasus involving brigands, smugglers, soldiers, rivals, and lovers, this classic tale of alienation influenced Tolstoy, Dostoyevsky, and Chekhov in Lermontov’s own century, and finds its modern-day counterparts in Anthony Burgess’s A Clockwork Orange, the novels of Chuck Palahniuk, and the films and plays of Neil LaBute.

Book The Intimate Stranger

Download or read book The Intimate Stranger written by Julian W. Connolly and published by Peter Lang Incorporated, International Academic Publishers. This book was released on 2001 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Intimate Stranger provides the first detailed investigation of a distinctive literary phenomenon: a fascination with demons and devils in nineteenth-century Russian literature. Nearly all of the major authors of the period - Pushkin, Gogol, Lermontov, Dostoevsky, and Tolstoy - used images of devils to explore issues of human temptation, sin, and guilt in a troubled world. Asking fundamental questions - where does evil come from? when does it appear in characters' lives? - these writers created a remarkable array of demonic figures, ranging from grotesque demons to handsome nihilists. This book discusses the various literary, religious, and folkloric factors that influenced the representation of the demonic, and it investigates the profound, soul-shattering effects that a personal encounter with the demonic may have on an individual's life.

Book The Shelf From LEQ to LES Adventures in Extreme Reading

Download or read book The Shelf From LEQ to LES Adventures in Extreme Reading written by Phyllis Rose and published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux. This book was released on 2014-05-13 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Phyllis Rose embarks on a grand literary experiment -- to systematically read her way through a random shelf of books in the library, LEQ-LES, "fairly sure that no one in the history of the world has read exactly this series of novels." An original take on literary taste and habits by the acclaimed author of Parallel Lives. Rose, after a career of reading from syllabuses and writing about canonical books, decided to read like an explorer. She "wanted to sample, more democratically, the actual ground of literature." Casting herself into the untracked wilderness of the New York Society Library's stacks, she chose a shelf of fiction almost at random and read her way through it. What results is a spirited experiment in "Off-Road or Extreme Reading." Rose's shelf of roughly thirty books has everything she could wish for—a remarkable variety of authors and a range of literary ambitions and styles. The early-nineteenth-century Russian classic A Hero of Our Time by Mikhail Lermontov is spine by spine with The Phantom of the Opera by Gaston Leroux. Stories of French Canadian farmers sit beside tales about aristocratic Austrians. California detective novels about a novel from an Afrikaans writer who fascinates Rose to the extent that she ends up watching a YouTube video of his funeral. A joyous testament to the thrill of engagement with books high and low, The Shelf leaves us with the feeling that there are treasures to be found on every library or bookstore shelf. Rose investigates her own discoveries with exuberance, candor, and while pondering the many questions her experiment raises and measuring her discoveries against her own inner shelf. “Exhilarating, adventurous, original--Phyllis Rose's The Shelf is a reminder of what reading and writing are all about.” -- Azar Nafisi, author of Reading Lolita in Tehran

Wodehouse The first novel in the Flashman series Fraser revives Flashman, a caddish bully from Tom Brown's Schooldays by Thomas Hughes, and relates Flashman’s adventures after he is expelled in drunken disgrace from Rugby school in the late 1830s.
