Aitken believes that, the normal nutrition of the nerve-centres is impaired, and says that palsy of the vasomotor nerves connected with the carotids, thyroid gland and heart, is the explanation given of this disease; and that it coexists with wasting diseases, or supervenes upon them, such as leucorrhoea and menorrhagia in females, and hemorrhoids in males. Amenorrhoea, long continued hemorrhages, want of rest, and many other similar causes, have been assigned in different cases. There. Is first lassi tude with inability to discharge accus tomed tasks; then pains, tinglings, and numbness in the limbs; then rigidity of spine with fixed pain; then mental con fusion with other cerebral symptoms; then impairment of the senses, and more or less loss of motor power. Such is concussion resulting in inflam mation - meningitis, myelitis, or more of ten both - the clinical features varying with the predominance of one or the other. More or less cerebral is generally associated with spinal meningitis, and a local softening of the whole or a part of the thickness of the cord, with oonss quent paralysis, etc., is apt to follow as the sequel to myelitis.
