Book excerpt: "This bulletin reports the results of the 1952 Iowa Corn Yield Test in which the performance of 219 different corn hybrids was compared. The state was divided into four sections, each of which was subdivided into three districts. A test field was planted in each district. Each hybrid entry was tested in all three districts of a section. The map shows how we divided the state into sections and districts and the approximate location of the farm where the hybrids were compared. Any producer of hybrid corn seed was eligible to enter his corn in the test. The widely grown hybrids in each section also were entered by the Iowa Crop Improvement Association. In the back of the bulletin you will find an index listing hybrids tested in 1952. The index also indicates whether the hybrid is a single, three-way, double or multiple cross." -- p. [858]

Book excerpt: "The Iowa Corn Yield test has been conducted annually since 1920. The main purpose of this test is to provide information that will help Iowa farmers select seed of hybrids best adapted for the area in which they live. This bulletin reports the performance of hybrids tested in 1957. Also shown are comparisons of hybrids tested for 2-year, 3-year and 4-year periods." -- p. 3

Book excerpt: "In 1953 we tested 229 corn hybrids in the Iowa Corn Yield test. Each hybrid was tested at a minimum of three locations. The division of the state into districts and sections is shown on the map. Seven characteristics of each hybrid were recorded and summarized. These included yield, stand, moisture, root and stalk lodging, ear height and dropped ears. Each hybrid was ranked by a performance score based on yield, moisture and resistance to lodging and dropped ears. You will find records in the tables showing how each hybrid performed for the above characteristics. An index listing the hybrids tested in 1953 is given in the back of this bulletin. A majority of the entries in the test were made by commercial hybrid corn companies. The Iowa Crop Improvement Association also entered 10 widely grown hybrids in each section as determined by a survey of farmers. The purpose of the Iowa Corn Yield Test is to determine the performance of hybrids. It is not a contest and should not be confused with the 5-acre Iowa Master Corn Growers Contest." -- Foreword, p. Book excerpt: "The main purpose of the Iowa Corn Yield Test is to compare the performance of corn hybrids and to make the information available to Iowa farmers. In 1954 we tested 90 corn hybrids at each of three locations in the northern section of Iowa. ... One-hundred corn hybrids were compared in each of the other three sections of the state. The hybrids were planted at three locations in each section, but the district 10 field was not harvested because of drouth conditions and a poor stand. They hybrids entered in the 1954 test were planted on about 72 percent of the total Iowa corn acreage, according to results from a survey of farmers. Six characteristics of each hybrid were recorded and summarized. These were yield, stand, moisture content at harvest, root and stalk lodging, and dropped ears. You will find a performance record for each hybrid for these characteristics in the tables of data. An index listing the hybrids tested in 1954 and the name and address of each entrant is given in the back of the bulletin. When the seed was packeted for planted, each entry was given a number. The entries were known only by this number until after the plots were harvested and the calculations completed. Therefore, no person concerned with the test know the identity of any entry. The presentation of these results does not imply approval of these hybrids by the Iowa Crop Improvement Association or the Iowa Agricultural Experiment Station." -- p. [2]

Book excerpt: "Each year the Iowa Farmer has a multitude of corn hybrids from which he can choose seed for planting. Some are well established strains of proven worth while others are new and relatively untried. It is impossible to determine, from the appearance of the seed in the bag, the desirability of any particular hybrid. The real test of its value is determined by planting it along with other hybrids to check its field performance. The Iowa Corn Yield test attempts to provide comparable performance records on a number of hybrids. It is believed that the information presented in this bulletin should afford a reliable comparison of the relative performance of various hybrids when grown in different parts of the state. Data are presented on each entry for yield, stand moisture, root and stalk lodging, ear height, dropped ears and damaged corn. A performance score has been used in evaluating the relative agronomic value of the various hybrids tested." -- p. [473]

Book excerpt: "The Concord grape and grapes of this type and hardiness which are the grapes most widely grown in Iowa, require yearly pruning if the grower wishes to obtain heavy annual yields of large-sized, high quality fruit. The illustration on the cover of this bulletin indicates the development and distribution of the fruit which may be expected on correctly pruned vines." -- p. [227]
