Book excerpt: It is hard to imagine nowadays that, for many years, France and Germany considered each other as "arch enemies." And yet, for well over a century, these two countries waged verbal and ultimately violent wars against each other. This study explores a particularly virulent phase during which each of these two nations projected certain assumptions about national character onto the other - distorted images, motivated by antipathy, fear, and envy, which contributed to the growing hostility between the two countries in the years before the First World War. Most remarkably, as the author discovered, the qualities each country ascribed to its chief adversary appeared to be exaggerated or negative versions of precisely those qualities that it perceived to be lacking or inadequate in itself. Moreover, banishing undesirable traits and projecting them onto another people was also an essential step in the consolidation of national identity. As such, it established a pattern that has become all too familiar to students of nationalism and xenophobia in recent decades. This study shows that antagonism between states is not a fact of nature but socially constructed.

Is the image in the mirror really you, or is it a strangely inverted facsimile? What if it were possible for the image in the mirror to climb out and enter this world of ours? Even more frightening, what if the image in the mirror—the inverted image of you—could drag you into the world of the mirror itself? This happens to Detective Maxwell of the Chicago Police Department. Intrigued or just inverted?

Book The Inversion

Download or read book The Inversion written by Kingsley Dennis and published by Aeon Books. This book was released on 2023-09-26 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rewriting perceptions of reality and unravelling the conspiracies of the modern mirror-world Have you ever wondered why things in life aren't quite as they seem? Why we celebrate distorted entertainments to such an extreme; or why an industrial-technology-media complex has become the dominant political and economic force of governance? Why our way of life seems morally corrupt and our choices upside-down? This is the Inversion: the model of reality that our brains have been programmed to accept and which also compels us to participate in and sustain. In his ground-breaking book, Kingsley Dennis examines these issues, questions this reality-model, and comes to some surprising conclusions. Dennis unpicks the complexities of our manipulated reality, enlightening readers to the nature and mechanisms of the inverted, mirror world that so many people have become lost within. Yet it does not need to remain this way - if people are ready and willing to open their eyes to what is going on around them. The Inversion deals with unpleasant truths which we too often ignore because a veil has been pulled over our eyes and minds. Within its pages, readers will find out about the hidden hands that work to normalize the madness of the 'upside-down world.' Dennis also examines the social engineering of spiritual control mechanisms, machinic consciousness, the metaverse, entropic or negative forces, the evolutionary impulse, the nature of the hybrid self - and much more. This book is for those readers who are ready to open their mind and to perceive a greater reality.

  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 204 pages

Download or read book The Book of the Mirror written by Miranda Anderson and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2007 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essays in this book are gathered together from the realms of art, literature, history, archaeology, philosophy and science. Together they weave a picture that gives us new insights into the mirror as a material object and as an image in art and texts. This interdisciplinary and innovative book raises important issues about the material life of an object and its intimate interrelations with socio-cultural imagery. Perceptions of the workings of our cognitive processes and of our subjectivity are shown to be dynamically interwoven with the technological and socio-cultural matrices of particular periods, whilst longer term continuities in the understanding and employment of the mirror reflect underlying continuities in the capacities and constraints of mirrors and of human subjects. This book demonstrates the active role imagery and technologies have always played in our thoughts, lives and worlds.
