Book American Universities Abroad

Download or read book American Universities Abroad written by Ted Purinton and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Across the globe, American-style and liberal arts universities are being established. From the first, the American University of Beirut, established in 1866, to the liberal arts institutions being established in Saudi Arabia, Ghana, and elsewhere in the twenty-first century, there is a clear sense of the global desire for the American approach to higher education as a way of counteracting traditional, more narrowly defined university educations. However, these universities operate in a distinctive dynamic that must learn to bridge one culture with another, and leadership of such institutions must by its nature focus on such complexities and tensions. Throughout the chapters of this book, this unique element of these universities will be better understood through the stories and experiences as presented by their presidents, provosts, and other academic leaders.

Book Understanding International Students from Asia in American Universities

Download or read book Understanding International Students from Asia in American Universities written by Yingyi Ma and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-10-20 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about international students from Asia studying at American universities in the age of globalization. It explores significant questions, such as: Why do they want to study in America? How do they make their college choices? To what extent do they integrate with domestic students, and what are the barriers for intergroup friendship? How do faculty and administrators at American institutions respond to changing campus and classroom dynamics with a growing student body from Asia? Have we provided them with the skills they need to succeed professionally? As they are preparing to become the educational, managerial and entrepreneurial elites of the world, do Asian international students plan to stay in the U.S. or return to their home country? Asian students constitute over 70 percent of all international students. Almost every major American university now faces unprecedented enrollment growth from Asian students. However, American universities rarely consider if they truly understand the experiences and needs of these students. This book argues that American universities need to learn about their Asian international students to be able to learn from them. It challenges the traditional framework that emphasizes adjustment and adaptation on the part of international students. It argues for the urgency to shift from this framework to the one calling for proactive institutional efforts to bring about successful experiences of international students.

Book Supporting International Students in US Higher Education

Download or read book Supporting International Students in US Higher Education written by Darbi L. Roberts and published by Palgrave Macmillan. This book was released on 2024-01-18 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the integral role that student affairs professionals play in the success of international students at higher education institutions in the US. International student support has often been thought of as the principal responsibility of international student services offices, but research suggests that international student engagement in the broader university community, and support for them by all student affairs and services offices on campus, is closely tied to persistence and retention. The authors explore a student development theory-based approach to supporting the experience and success of international students from all facets of student affairs and services. The book explores practical and strategic implications of a more integrative approach to international student support both inside and outside of the classroom, while also utilizing a critical lens in applying models that were originally built for predominantly white institutions and US citizens.
