Download or read book The Intercourse Between the United States and Japan Vol 8 written by Inazo Nitobe and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Intercourse Between the United States and Japan, Vol. 8: An Historical Sketch In these days of universal intellectual activity, when each dawning day finds new literary productions brought to light, it requires an apology from an unknown novice in authorship, should he dare to trespass upon the patience of the public. My apology lies in the sincere gratitude I feel for the attitude of America, as a nation, towards Japan, and of a few individual Americans towards me personally. If this humble work of mine should contribute in the smallest measure toward strengthening the bond of national friendship, or serve to bring nearer to each other a few individual hearts in the two countries, I shall feel more than amply repaid for the time spent in writing the book. I am well aware how far short of the possibilities of such a work this effort falls. If I had undertaken the task on a more elaborate scale, which might easily have been done with the materials which were placed at my disposal, I might, perhaps, have been able to succeed better; but I naturally shrank from imposing upon overburdened readers. For the sources of my information I have depended firstly, on Japanese works of reliable authority; secondly, on foreign writers of different nationalities; and, thirdly, on personal correspondence with a number of Japanese and Americans, who took active part in the events which I have endeavored to describe. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the time of Marco Polo to the present, Japan has remained an enigma to the rest of the world. Until the World War ushered in a new phase in the history of peoples the great mass of Americans were content to leave it in that condition. But the great struggle, involving as it did every nation of first rate importance in the world, brought home to very people but to Americans in particular, the essential unity of the world. No longer may we as a people calmly preoccupy ourselves with our varied domestic interests, rating secure in our isolation from asiatic and European affairs by the broad expanse of ocean waste. Modern science has removed the barriers of time and means, and our isolation policy is now purely a matter of history. Since the facts are as they are, let us in dealing either with the nations of the East or the West accept this fact once and for all time, and assume a responsibility commensurate with our wealth and capacity in the administration and adjunction of world affairs

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sanitized Sex analyzes the development of new forms of regulation concerning prostitution, venereal disease, and intimacy during the American occupation of Japan after the Second World War, focusing on the period between 1945 and 1952. It contributes to the cultural and social history of the occupation of Japan by investigating the intersections of ordering principles like race, class, gender, and sexuality. It also reveals how sex and its regulation were not marginal but key issues in postwar empire-building, U.S.-Japanese relations, and American and Japanese self-imagery. The regulation of sexual encounters between occupiers and occupied was closely linked to the disintegration of the Japanese empire and the rise of U.S. hegemony in the Asia-Pacific region during the Cold War era. Shedding new light on the configuration of postwar Japan, the process of decolonization, the postcolonial formation of the Asia-Pacific region, and the particularities of postwar U.S. imperialism, Sanitized Sex offers a reading of the intimacies of empires—defeated and victorious.

Book excerpt: Comfort Women and Sex in the Battle Zone is an exhaustive examination of the controversial issue of comfort women, who provided sexual services to Japanese soldiers before and during World War II. This book provides extensive documents and narratives by witnesses to shed light on the reality of these women who worked in the battle zone. The book also covers Japan’s political and diplomatic disagreements with neighboring nations, in particular South Korea and China, over this issue, as well as other international reactions, including the U.S. House of Representatives resolution that urged the Japanese government to apologize to former comfort women. The book is an English translation of the Japanese version first published in 1999 and reprinted several times, with additional sections covering recent developments.
