Book The Intelligence of the Feeble Minded Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Intelligence of the Feeble Minded Classic Reprint written by Alfred Binet and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Intelligence of the Feeble-Minded It is with peculiar pleasure that the Vineland Research Department presents to the public Miss Kite's translation of Binet and Simon's work entitled The Intelligence of the Feeble-Minded. Nowhere does Binet's genius show more brilliantly than in this work. That he in the midst of a busy life and in addition to all his other work could have acquired so great a knowledge of mental defectives is amazing; the more so when we realize that it was first-hand knowledge gained from observation backed by keen perception, that perception that enabled him to see the truth with a quickness that makes the rest of us, still groping in the dark, question if it was truth Binet saw. But that it was truth we arc learning every day. After ten years of the Vineland laboratory' it is surprising to find how little wc have found that Binet had not already discovered. It is true we have found it independently and so it is confirmatory evidence. It is because our own experience has led us to the same conclusions, wherever we have studied the same points, that we have come to have such a profound regard for Binet that we feel like pronouncing this the most important and enlightening work on the real nature of the mental defective, that has ever appeared. The study of the language of the feeble-minded will also be found most illuminating in a region usually characterized by darkness. Finally the discussion of fccblc-mindcdness and dementia is quite as timely and enlightening as the rest. We have included these various articles in this volume for two reasons: first, because they all contribute to our knowledge of the feeble-minded; and second, they all give us further illustration of the way Binet used his own Measuring Scale. A word might be said in reference to the title. Binet and Simon's title for the first and longest section is "L'Intelligence des Imbeciles" literally "The Intelligence of the Imbeciles" but they definitely state (page 10) that they refer to the entire group of subnormals. This book was released on 2018-12-26 with total page 694 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Feeble-Mindedness Its Causes and Consequences This book is in the nature of a report on work done at the Vineland Research Laboratory during the past five years in an attempt to discover the causes of the feeble-mindedness of the children in the Institution. No attempt has been made to treat exhaustively any of the topics that have come up for con sideration. The report is far from complete. Our cases are still being studied and the data are so incomplete in many ways that one is tempted to withhold publication until the results of other studies now in progress could be added. Such a procedure would have given a more satisfactory product. But in view of the great popular interest in these topics and the demand for informa tion, we have put aside personal preferences and prepared what data we had in as available form as we could. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Almosts: A Study of the Feeble-Minded Sir William Osler, with characteristic kindness and generosity, wrote an Introduction to The Almosts and forwarded the manuscript from Oxford in the spring of 1919. To the great loss of the reader, the manuscript never arrived. All efforts to find it have been unavailing, and now the master has laid aside his pen. Nevertheless, he, being dead, yet speaketh and his spirit still abides with his pupils. To all my fellow-servants who are helping the mentally defective, and by helping them trying to serve humanity, this little book is offered in the hope that in their hands it may be used to advance the work of awakening public interest and educating public opinion. This book was released on 2018-02-08 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Waverley Researches in the Pathology of the Feeble-Minded: Research Series, Cases I to X Yet it is not merely the present-day neglect of fundamentals in feeble-mindedness that justifies our undertaking. Other sciences have advanced in the meantime. What would not the modern ideas of glandular dysfunction have meant to Bourneville? How Hammarberg would have rejoiced had the modern work of the cortex - topographers enabled him to omit a large part of his monograph and rush on to deeper studies in feeble mindedness? How Wilmarth would have enjoyed the resources of a modern laboratory! These considerations have been set forth more extensively, though still too briefly, in Article I. Here we Wish to say that we are minded to present a series of studies of the anatomy, and especially of the brain anatomy, of the feeble-minded (including idiots, imbeciles, and a variety of subnormals under that general term) to which we set the provisional terminus of fifty cases. Until we have presented at least fifty cases from an identical point of view, we feel that we shall hardly be warranted in drawing conclusions. Still, epicritical remarks will be in order with each group of ten cases presented. We plan to present perhaps ten cases a year. The great foundations aforesaid, which have so neglected the topic, might of course speed up the work appreciably; yet it must be granted that every case of feeble-mindedness is so much a unique, not to say Argus-eyed, a problem that speeding-up by funds alone is hardly a practical policy. More living brains are needed to work out the problems of the brains Of feeble-minded, whether living or dead but cadit quaestio, that is the urgent lack of mental hygiene as a whole. Such a procedure would have given a more satisfactory product. But in view of the great popular interest in these topics and the demand for information, we have put aside personal preferences and prepared what data we had in as available form as we could. The 327 cases here presented constitute a unitary group. They have not been selected; they are of all ages and grades of defect. They include every case that was investigated, and every child whose home was in New Jersey or near by was investigated. Only those were omitted whose homes were so far away that the cost of travel for our field-workers was prohibitive. We have included in this book all the cases, so that the reader might see the entire group on which our statistics are based. Another reason for including them is because it is believed that other students with other interests will find in this material much that we have made no attempt to use. In this way the data may have a value beyond anything we ourselves have deduced from them. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Porteus Tests the Vineland Revision Classic Reprint

Download or read book Porteus Tests the Vineland Revision Classic Reprint written by S. D. Porteus and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-09 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Porteus Tests the Vineland Revision It has already been recognized that we cannot fix any absolute bounds of normality by Binet age. Because the highest Binet ages of individuals in feeble-minded institutions were found to range up to 12 years, that level was at first taken as the lower limits of normality. But we now find that there is a very large proportion of people not feeble - minded who are below that level - probably about 40 per cent. Of the men tested in the army examinations being below a mental age of 12 years. On the other hand, because there are individuals as low as 10 years Binet age who do not require control for their own protection or for the good of others, it is just as unwise to run to the other extreme and to say that 10 years must be regarded as the upper limits of moronity. The truth is that a mental range between these limits marks a zone which is populated by both feeble minded and normals. We may call 11 years mental age the central point of distribution in this zone, which extends from 9 to 13 years Binet age. This does not mean that all those within the borderland are borderline cases. The normals within this zone are normals and not borderline cases. As regards the question of diagnosis, we must admit that in the determination of social fitness there is more than the intelligence as indicated by Binet examinations to be considered. In the pamphlet quoted above there is this pregnant sentence, A man's value to the service should not be judged by his intelligence alone. There are many positive and negative virtues not examined by the mental tests, which may have a great bearing on individual efficiency in the military service. Exactly the same thing is true of tested intelligence in rela tion to social value. There are other factors besides mental test age which afi'ect the question of social efficiency. At the same time it is probably true to state that intelligence is the most important single factor in social as in military fitness. The other factors which must be considered are as much temperamental as mental. However, we may disagree about the psychological definitions of feeble-mindedness, we must remember that society is interested in the mental defective almost solely as a potential or actual social inefficient. Ultimately, then, it is the social criterion which must stand. Since Binet's' day it has been recognized that mental tests as commonly used do not differentiate a large class of those who, under the social definition, should be regarded as feeble - minded. Such cases find their way in large numbers to institutions and require segregation equally as much as the ordinary defectives.
