Download or read book The Inspiration and Authority of the Bible Classic Reprint written by John Clifford and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Inspiration and Authority of the Bible The First Edition of this book sold very rapidly, and enquiries have been repeatedly made for a second issue. That issue has been delayed so that I might give consideration to the criticisms passed upon some of the statements I have made. One reviewer suggested that I should shew "the constant Divine element in the Bible, the permanent Truth underneath all changing forms." At the risk of repetition I have, in response to that counsel, added the chapter on "Why the Bible Lives." But the greater part of the controversy excited by the book bore upon the problem of "the Inerrancy of the Bible." This accounts for the addition of chapters four and five. In reply to hints from those who have used the book in College Class work, I have expounded and confirmed some statements, sometimes in the text, and at others, in appended notes. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the principal articles by the late Benjamin Breckinridge Warfield having to do with the nature and authority of the Bible. A distinctly biblical theologian, fully abreast of the critical scholarship of the day, and a foe of irrationalism in all its forms -- faith for him was conviction grounded on evidence -- it is not surprising that he devoted such exceptional attention to this theme. Written from time to time and printed in various publications during his lifetime, these articles were included in the volume Revelation and Inspiration published by the Oxford University Press subsequent to his death. - Foreword.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Inspiration of the Bible The following Essay on the Inspiration of the Bible, has been prepared from the first part of an interesting book entitled Lucilla, or the Reading of the Bible. Originally written in French by Rev. Mr. Monod, recently translated and published by the London Religious Tract Society. The design of the Author in that work is to show, in the first - place, that the Bible is the W ord of God, and consequently of Divine authority; and in the second place, that it is at once the privilege and the duty of all men to read it with reference to their personal salvation. The first part, the substance of which is given in the following pages, is in the form of Letters, and a Dialogue between a French Abbe, Mr. Lasalle and Lucilla, the iwife of Mr. L., which for several reasons it was thought best to abridge and condense into a continuous discourse. In doing this, great care has been taken to preserve Mr. Monod's argument entire, and his language so far as was practicable. The portions omitted belong not to the substance but the form of the discussion; and. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2018-01-18 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Divine Inspiration of the Bible If the Bible is the Word of God; if it stands on an in finitely exalted plane, all alone; if it immeasurably tran scends all the greatest productions of human genius; then, we should naturally expect to find that it has unique cre dentials, that there are internal marks which prove it to be the handiwork of God, that there is conclusive evidence to show that its Author is superhuman, Divine. That these expectations are realized we shall now endeavor to show; that there is no reason whatever for any one to doubt the Divine inspiration of the Scriptures is the purpose of this book to demonstrate. As we examine the natural world we find innumerable proofs of the existence of a Personal Creator, and the same God who has manifested Himself thro' His works has also revealed His wisdom and will thro' His Word. The God of creation and the God of written revelation are One, and there are irrefutable arguments to show that the Almighty who made the heavens and the earth. Is also the Author of the Bible. This book was released on 2016-06-21 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Witness of the Spirit in Relation to the Authority and the Inspiration of Scripture On the other hand, it is evident that when we discover that the Scriptures give us not merely a credible record of a super natural revelation, written by intelligent and reliable authors, but written by men who were supernaturally guided to embody correctly in language what God had supernaturally given to them, they must necessarily have for us the highest authority. While, therefore, these books might have a measure of authority apart from inspiration, their highest authority is linked with plenary inspiration. All Christians assign to the Bible a position and authority which! They accord to no other book, and Protestants are wont to regard them as the only rule of faith and practice. If we cherish this view, we should seek to know the grounds which warrant us to entertain it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Divine Authority of the Bible The present brief treatise is an outgrowth of special studies in inductive logic, begun in the midst of pastoral labors sixteen or seventeen years ago; and considerable portions of it were written at that time. The author found himself, as nearly all young pastors do when coming in practical contact with the unbelief of the age, compelled as never before to give a reason for the faith that was in him; and was continually called upon to answer in the presence of the doubtful and unbelieving such questions as these: 1. What are both the general and specific grounds of confidence in the truths of the Christian religion? The author's answer to this question may be found in the little treatise on "The Logic of Christian Evidences," published four years ago. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Biblical Inspiration and Christ For it is evident that if we confine ourselves to the words inspiration, fieomeuaria, we still have no standard by which to distinguish the Bible from scores of other books. According to its primary meaning, in Spiration is not confined to the Bible. It exists and works wherever God breathes life and power into men. A work of genius is inspired. A good life is inspired. A deed of heroism is an inspiration. St. John's gos pel is inspired, but so are the Iliad, and Hamlet and the Divina Commedia. And yet it is entirely consist ent with this to say that the peculiar quality of Biblical inspiration is higher than the inspiration of these works. And imparts to the Bible a character which belongs to none of them. What this peculiar element is, is the thing we want to know. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Bible Doctrine of Inspiration Explained and Vindicated For more than a quarter Of a century it has been my privilege and duty, in giving theological instruction, to discuss the subject of Inspiration. As each year I have studied it afresh, my sense Of its importance has increased; and in examining the accumulating litera ture on the topic in books, reviews, and newspapers, I have felt moved to get closer to the original sources, and have determined to ask the attention of the public to a study Of it specially from a Biblical standpoint. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bible Inspiration: Plenary and VerbalInspiration, on the other hand, cons1sts in that actu ating, controlling, and guiding influence of the Holy Spirit, under which God's chosen messengers spoke and wrote the original Scriptures. In short, it denotes that extraordinary divine influence, under the direction and control of which all parts of the original Scriptures were recorded, whether they be direct revelations or mere historical facts. So that the entire Bible and every part of it was written by Inspiration, and there fore is true.N ow, Inspiration pertains, not so much to the writers, as to their writings. Accordingly, says Paul: All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profit able, etc. 2 Tim. Iii. 16. The meaning of this passage is the same, whether it be rendered, All Scripture is inspired by God (revised Version), or, All Scripture is given by inspiration of God. In both, the apostle equally attests the fact that all Scripture is divinely inspired. Inspiration, therefore, is to be viewed rather in the Book, than in the men; the Book was inspired for all time, the men merely for the time being. Most of the errors on this subject have arisen from viewing inspiration in the writers, rather than in their writings.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Inquiry Into the Proofs, Nature, and Extent of Inspiration, and Into the Authority of Scripture It is thus-that some refuse to recognise any inspiration of the new-testament-scriptures, excepting for the single assertion that Jesus is the Christ. Others again, excluding all the historical portions of the Bible, would limit the sacred character to its doctrinal assertions. It is maintained by some, and denied by others, that inspiration extends to physical facts - to notices respecting profane history - to the style and com position. According to some, the whole of Scripture, matter and language, must be alike of divine authorship; whilst others find no difficulty in supposing, that God might have committed his extraordinary agency altogether to the uncon trolled and unassisted registry of fallible men.
