Book Preliminary Introduction to the Study of Entomology

Download or read book Preliminary Introduction to the Study of Entomology written by Lawrence Bruner and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-21 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Preliminary Introduction to the Study of Entomology: Together With a Chapter on Remedies, or Methods That Can Be Used in Fighting Injurious Insects; Insect Enemies of the Apple Tree and Its Fruit, and the Insect Enemies of Small Grains This book has been prepared for the purpose of partially supplying a demand that seems to exist here in the West for an elementary work on entomology such as can be used in the public schools and on the farm. It is not an original production, but comprises notes from many sources as they have been gathered by the writer and presented from time to time in talks to his classes in the University of Nebraska and before audiences at farmers' institutes throughout the state. The chapters on remedies and on apple and small grain insects have been compiled and rearranged from the writings of such eminent economic entomoligists as Professors C. V. Riley, A. S. Forbes, L. O. Howard, J. H. Comstock. J. A. Lintner, Herbert Osborn, Otto Lugger, C. M. Weed, H. E. Weed, H. Garman, C. P. Gillett, F. M. Webster, Chancellor F. H. Snow, and a number of others. The illustrations also have, in most instances, been obtained from the same sources and are credited to their authors. The first part of this book is practically the same as his report for 1893 as entomologist to the State Board of Agriculture. The appendix on the insect enemies of the apple tree and its fruit was printed in the Horticultural Society's report for the year 1894. The paper on insect enemies of small grains was contained in last year's Agricultural report, and is reproduced here so as to bring together under one cover accounts of as many of our common injurious insects as can conveniently be done at this time without adding anything to the cost of the book. It is hoped by the writer that the work will meet with the approval of those for whom it was intended. If this proves true, he will feel amply repaid for the time spent in its preparation. Book Some Insects Attacking the Steams of Growing Wheat Rye Barley and Oats

Download or read book Some Insects Attacking the Steams of Growing Wheat Rye Barley and Oats written by F. M. Webster and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-28 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Insects Attacking the Steams of Growing Wheat Rye, Barley, and Oats: With Methods of Prevention and Suppression Sir: I have the honor to transmit herewith the manuscript of a paper entitled "Some insects attacking the stems of growing wheat, rye, barley, and oats," prepared under my direction by Prof. Francis M. Webster, temporary field agent of the Division of Entomology, and now stationed at Urbana, III. Professor Webster has acted as field agent of this Division, having received temporary appointment since 1884, with headquarters at the experiment stations of Indiana, Ohio, and Illinois, and is ably qualified for the prosecution of the present work through years of study in the States mentioned of the insects which will be treated. As remarked in the introduction, this paper deals with the injuries committed to small grains by different forms of minute flies, eight species in all, which are generally confused by the average farmer with the Hessian fly. The differences between these various species and their method of attack in comparison with that of the Hessian fly are duly pointed out, and many valuable suggestions based upon an intimate knowledge of the habits of these insects are made for the mitigation of their ravages. In most instances losses by these insects could be prevented by the simplest of farming practices, as set forth in their proper place. I recommend the publication of this report as Bulletin No. 42 of this Division. The fifteen text figures are necessary for the purposes of illustration, those illustrating plants having been kindly loaned by the office of Agrostologist. It causes some damage every year, and several outbreaks have occurred. The first reported infestation of this insect in the United States was in Virginia in 1882. Since then, at least 19 outbreaks have occurred. A serious one hit Texas and Oklahoma in 1942. More than 61 million bushels of grain valued at $38 million were lost. Book Insect Enemies of Western Forests Classic Reprint

Download or read book Insect Enemies of Western Forests Classic Reprint written by Frederick Paul Keen and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-29 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Insect Enemies of Western Forests Published bulletins, articles, and records, unpublished reports by field men, and manuals of instruction have been used freely as needed. The text of earlier editions has been revised extensively, to take into account the new insecticides developed during World War II and the tremendous change such chemicals as ddt have made on forest-insect-control procedures. J. M. Miller, J. C. Even den, R. L. Furniss, and N. D. Wygant furnished material from the different regions of the West. In fact, the entire technical force of the Bureau's western forest-insect laboratories con tributed material for this publication. J. E. Patterson assisted in preparing the illustrations. This manual is restricted to insects found in forests west of the Great Plains, roughly the 100th meridian. Insects of shade and ornamental trees are touched upon only incidentally. A companion volume, Insect Enemies of Eastern Forests, by F. C. Craighead and eastern workers (37) (miscellaneous Publication 657) should be consulted for information on eastern forest insects and many others that are Nation-wide in distribution. Book TREATISE ON THE INSECT ENEMIES

Download or read book TREATISE ON THE INSECT ENEMIES written by Isaac P. Trimble and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-08 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on the Insect Enemies of Fruit and Fruit Trees No other portion of the agriculture of our country is at this time receiving so much attention as that devoted to the culture of Fruit. The growing of young trees in nurseries, as an art, has been greatly improved, and the supply of such trees is enormous. Books have been prepared by men of eminent ability and mature experience, giving all necessary information for the management of the orchard; and the fruits that have been proved valuable have been carefully figured and described. Some men are devoting much attention to the improvement of kinds, and with most satisfactory results. Fruits that were highly esteemed a few years ago are now superseded, and amateurs hope to identify their names with better sorts; and why not '2 There seems to be no limit set by nature to improvement in this direction. The Seckel Pear was found growing wild in a hedgerow. Probably the blossom that produced the pear, from the seed of which that tree grew, had been visited by a bee dusty with pollen from another blossom, and thus a germ was fertilized, which in time brought forth this hybrid of such surpassing excellence. The science of Botany teaches us that we can hybridize as well as bees, and improvements in fruits are now brought about as the designs of men rather than as the accidents of insects. Grafting, budding, and the propagation by cuttings give us the means of multiplying these better kinds with a rapidity characteristic of the age. 'but with all these signs of progress, the supply of fruit is far short of the wants of the people. The prices are often extravagant to the consumers, and do not always remunerate the producers. Book Insects Injurious to Stored Grains and Their Ground Products Classic Reprint

Download or read book Insects Injurious to Stored Grains and Their Ground Products Classic Reprint written by A. A. Girault and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-09 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Insects Injurious to Stored Grains and Their Ground Products It is well known that many kinds of insects live in wheat and other grains and in meal and flour, either accompanying the grain to the granary from the field, or going to it after it is stored. Many, indeed, go with it from the producer to the customer thru cribs, elevators, mills, and warehouses, to the retail store, and thence to our homes. Insects of these habits are particularly hardy, and many are so far omnivorous that they may live and multiply on food which seems to us to contain no nourishment. All are either beetles or their larvae, or, the larvae of moths. The latter are of fewer kinds but of greater capacity for mischief than the former. At any particular time and place, half a dozen to a dozen Of these insects may be present, working in various ways, some of them, indeed, not directly injurious but feeding on chaff or other granary debris, and obnoxious merely by their presence. Of the others, one or more may be injuring individual kernels of grain in a way to make them unfit for food and to prevent their growing if sown; or one may be webbing together flour and meal in mills, making them useless for food, and also clogging some parts of the machinery by webbing together masses of flour. Further harm may be done by causing fermentation in the stored grain. The percentage of actual injury may not be large for the whole mass infested, but the mere presence of considerable numbers of these insects reduces the value of the grain or flour, and may interfere seriously with its sale.
