Book The Inquisition of Stephen F Austin

Download or read book The Inquisition of Stephen F Austin written by Bruce W Clavey and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2021-12-21 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The era of New Spain was over, and empresario Stephen F. Austin of San Felipe, Texas was in bitter trouble in Mexico. The centuries-old Holy Inquisition had recently ended, and Dominican priests had ceased the unsavory torture of citizens for religious crimes and the prosecuting of their own Jesuit brethren for advocating independence. Nevertheless, when Austin was arrested in 1834 on suspicion of sedition, he was jailed at the mother of Inquisition prisons in the capital city and forced to reckon with a legal system that still lay deep in its shadow. Austin's dungeon habitat faded over time from Texas memory, but a description of his primitive quarters in his own words would provide the means for the recovery of its location. The Inquisition of Stephen F. Austin revisits how details from royal treasury records, civil engineer accounts, and eyewitness journalist articles, as unlocked by clues from his prison writings, were what led ultimately to the author's rediscovery of his dungeon keep in the famed Palace of the Inquisition in 2017.

Book Stephen F Austin

Download or read book Stephen F Austin written by Gregg Cantrell and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2016-02-09 with total page 640 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Texas State Historical Association is pleased to offer a reprint edition of Stephen F. Austin: Empresario of Texas, Gregg Cantrell’s path-breaking biography of the founder of Anglo Texas. Cantrell’s portrait goes beyond the traditional interpretation of Austin as the man who spearheaded American Manifest Destiny. Cantrell portrays Austin as a borderlands figure who could navigate the complex cultural landscape of 1820s Texas, then a portion of Mexico. His command of the Spanish language, respect for the Mexican people, and ability to navigate the shoals of Mexican politics made him the perfect advocate for his colonists and often for all of Texas. Yet when conflicts between Anglo colonists and Mexican authorities turned violent, Austin’s accomodationist stance became outdated. Overshadowed by the military hero Sam Houston, he died at the age of forty-three, just six months after Texas independence. Decades after his death, Austin’s reputation was resurrected and he became known as the “Father of Texas.” More than just an icon, Stephen F. Austin emerges from these pages as a shrewd, complicated, and sometimes conflicted figure.

Book Race and U S Foreign Policy in the Ages of Territorial and Market Expansion 1840 1900

Download or read book Race and U S Foreign Policy in the Ages of Territorial and Market Expansion 1840 1900 written by E. Nathaniel Gates and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-03-05 with total page 423 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Published in 1998. Explores the concept of "race" The term "race," which originally denoted genealogical or class identity, has in the comparatively brief span of 300 years taken on an entirely new meaning. In the wake of the Enlightenment it came to be applied to social groups. This ideological transformation coupled with a dogmatic insistence that the groups so designated were natural, and not socially created, gave birth to the modern notion of "races" as genetically distinct entities. The results of this view were the encoding of "race" and "racial" hierarchies in law, literature, and culture. How "racial" categories facilitate social control The articles in the series demonstrate that the classification of humans according to selected physical characteristics was an arbitrary decision that was not based on valid scientific method. They also examine the impact of colonialism on the propagation of the concept and note that "racial" categorization is a powerful social force that is often used to promote the interests of dominant social groups. Finally, the collection surveys how laws based on "race" have been enacted around the world to deny power to minority groups. A multidisciplinary resource This collection of outstanding articles brings multiple perspectives to bear on race theory and draws on a wider ranger of periodicals than even the largest library usually holds. Even if all the articles were available on campus, chances are that a student would have to track them down in several libraries and microfilm collections. Providing, of course, that no journals were reserved for graduate students, out for binding, or simply missing. This convenient set saves students substantial time and effort by making available all the key articles in one reliable source. Authoritative commentary The series editor has put together a balanced selection of the most significant works, accompanied by expert commentary. A general introduction gives important background information and outlines fundamental issues, current scholarship, and scholarly controversies. Introductions to individual volumes put the articles in context and draw attention to germinal ideas and major shifts in the field. After reading the material, even a beginning student will have an excellent grasp of the basics of the subject.
