Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Doctor Justo Pastor Proceso López should be a happy man--he has a family, a thriving medical practice, and adoring patients--but he lives a troubled life. He is married to a beautiful woman, but she despises him, and thanks to her influence he is unable to win favor with his two daughters. In his growing despair, López becomes obsessed with exposing the myth of national hero Simón Bolívar--El Libertador, "The Liberator"--for what it truly is: a lie covering up years of massacres, betrayals, and sex scandals. But in interviewing elder locals about their memories of Bolívar he discovers that in Pasto, Colombia, the myth of Bolívar holds a tight grip on the identity of the city. To put an end the cult of El Libertador, López devises an elaborate stunt involving a carnival float on the day of The Black and White Carnival, celebrating the Feast of the Holy Innocents. In the feverish atmosphere of the Feast celebrations, Doctor López watches his life come undone before his eyes. From one of Colombia's foremost literary talents, Feast of the Innocents is both heartbreaking and triumphant, a literary portrait of obsession, alienation, and cultural identity in 1960s Colombia.

Book Innocence Lost

  • Author : Christopher W. Gowans
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 1994-06-16
  • ISBN : 0195359097

Download or read book Innocence Lost written by Christopher W. Gowans and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1994-06-16 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our lives are such that moral wrongdoing is sometimes inescapable for us. We have moral responsibilities to persons which may conflict and which it is wrong to violate even when they do conflict. Christopher W. Gowans argues that we must accept this conclusion if we are to make sense of our moral experience and the way in which persons are valuable to us. In defending this position, he critically examines the recent moral dilemmas debate. He maintains that what is important in this debate is not whether there are irresolvable moral conflicts, but whether there are moral conflicts in which wrongdoing is unavoidable. Though it would be incoherent to conclude moral deliberation by deciding to perform incompatible actions, he argues that there is nothing incoherent in supposing that we have conflicting moral responsibilities. In this way, he shows that it is possible to capture the intuitions of those who have defended the idea of moral dilemmas while meeting the objections of those who have rejected this idea. Gowans carefully evaluates utilitarian and Kantian analyses of moral dilemmas. He argues that these approaches eliminate genuine moral conflict only by displacing persons as direct objects of moral concern. As an alternative, he develops a more concrete account in which moral responsibilities to persons are central. The book also includes discussions of Melville's Billy Budd, methodology in moral philosophy, moral pluralism, moral tragedy, and "dirty hands" in politics.

Book A World of Lost Innocence

Download or read book A World of Lost Innocence written by Nicola Darwood and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2012-04-25 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elizabeth Bowen was a prolific writer; her publishing career spanned five decades and during this time she wrote ten novels, over one hundred short stories and countless reviews and journal articles. While earlier novels are now acknowledged as Modernist texts, her later novels can be read through the lens of postmodernism; they can be considered variously as romantic fiction, marriage novels, war time spy thrillers and psychological drama but, throughout her novels, she consistently questioned notions of identity, sexuality and the loss of innocence. A World of Lost Innocence: The Fiction of Elizabeth Bowen offers a reading of Elizabeth Bowen’s fiction which focuses specifically on this loss, foregrounding the psychological conflicts experienced by her protagonists. It examines the subject not only across the range of her fiction, but also in relation to her unfolding narrative structures through a chronologically based discussion of her novels and selected short stories, interwoven with biographical information and drawing on unpublished letters. This book investigates the dominant kinds of innocence that Bowen represents throughout her fiction: the innocence attributed to childhood, sexual innocence and sexual morality, and political innocence, and argues that the transition from innocence to experience plays an important role in the epistemological journey faced both by Bowen’s characters and her readers.

Book The Chrysalis of Oc Innocent and the Innocents

Download or read book The Chrysalis of Oc Innocent and the Innocents written by Peter V. Wright and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2015-09-25 with total page 652 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the turn of the thirteenth century, a tolerant, wealthy, and cultured society blossomed in what is now southwestern France. Occitania was the domain of the Counts of Toulouse. Its people valued poetry, music, and literature over warfare. Their language Occitan, was the lingua franca of the courts of Europe. Their troubadours traveled widely and were popular sources of news and entertainment. Tragically, their success struck fear in the minds of the pope and kings, so a brutal crusade was launched to destroy a people that sought only peace. Seven hundred years later, as the battles raged on the Normandy beaches, a sleepy little town in the Limousin woke up to what they expected to be like any other. But this day they were to have unwelcome visitors, the Waffen SS. The Chrysalis of Oc is a sweeping historical tale that links thirteenth and twentieth century France and the bloody crusades that changed the course of the world forever.
