Book excerpt: "Patience is the ornament of the brave," Eknath Easwaran’s wise grandmother used to say. In all relationships, Easwaran says, patience is the mark of love. An experienced spiritual teacher, he gives powerful insights and advice for developing patience at home and at work, with his unique blend of humor and practicality. Stories offer quiet interludes throughout this little book. Anecdotes about animals, sports stars, and happy family outings make these short, varied readings as entertaining as they are instructive. Gentle reminiscences of India, tales from Easwaran’s Hindu heritage, and inspiration from the world’s saints lift the reader’s spirits and give courage. Just keep trying, Easwaran says, and you’ll find there’s no end to your patience -- no end to the wisdom, love, and compassion in your heart. This book makes a thoughtful gift for anyone seeking a life that is kinder, more stable, and serene.

Download or read book Resilience written by Boris Cyrulnik and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2011-02-17 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Cyrulink has healed people and countries." (The Times, London) Renowned French neuropsychiatrist and psychoanalyst Boris Cyrulnik's parents were deported to a concentration camp during the Second World War. They never returned. This early personal trauma at the age of five led Cyrulnik to his life's work helping individuals and countries come to terms with their pasts and forge ahead to create positive futures. It is his firm belief that trauma does not equal destiny-that, rather, we can find strength in the face of pain. Drawing on years of experience working around the globe with children who have been abused, orphaned, fought in wars and escaped genocide, Cyrulnik here tells many amazing and moving stories of individuals whose experiences prove that suffering, however appalling, can be the making of somebody rather than their destruction. This inspiring book teaches us that we can not only survive in the shadow of adversity-we can thrive.
Download or read book Inner Strengths written by Claire Frederick and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-31 with total page 411 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: However it is conceived and described by psychotherapists with different orientations, a stronger ego is a universally-acknowledged goal of therapeutic work. Inner Strengths is the first book to meet the need for a comprehensive treatment of approaches to ego-strengthening in psychotherapy. It provides contemporary psychodynamic, object relations, self-psychology, ego state, and transpersonal theoretical models for understanding how and why ego-strengthening occurs. The authors are experienced psychotherapists who integrate hypnosis into their own practice of psychotherapy. They have been active in developing the newer, projective-evocative ego-strengthening techniques emphasizing the utilization of patients' inner resources. They survey the history of ego-strengthening efforts and show how that which has been considered intrinsically hypnotic connects with the great traditions of psychotherapy. Additionally, they offer step-by-step instructions for a diversity of ego-strengthening methods that can be used for patient self-care, internal boundary formation, and personality maturation in a wide range of clinical conditions. Their discussion of the fundamental concepts of ego-strengthening draws on their theoretical and clinical explorations of dynamic internal resources such as memory, strength, wisdom, self-soothing, and love. Throughout the book, theory is balanced by an unusual richness of extended clinical examples and a wide variety of practical ego-strengthening scripts. Clinicians need not be trained in hypnosis to find Inner Strengths clarifying and helpful reading; the fundamental points so vividly made by the authors are relevant to many nonhypnotic-therapeutic interventions and issues.

Have we lost our original nature in the pursuit of the external material world? Wang Yangming's School of Mind of nearly 500 years ago teaches us how to overcome external circumstances and seek the source of the great strength that lies in our innermost being. Wang Yangming's School of Mind is a gathering together of the achievements of Confucianism, Taoism and Buddhism. It is one of the most representative and influential strands of Chinese philosophical thought and proposes that “conscience” is a cosmic prime principle innate in man that transcends all living things. The lifelong realization and practice of conscience is the only path towards self-fulfillment and perfection of character. Download or read book Taijiquan written by C. P. Ong and published by . This book was released on 2013-10 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book diverges from traditional exposition on Taijiquan (Tai Chi Chuan) as it engages rather than shuns the role of muscles in elucidating the cryptic practice dictum of "using yi (mind) and not li (muscle force)." It centers on the core principle of Taiji balance-the balance of yin and yang, but presents the metaphysics of balance the way the body comprehends it, developmentally, through practice in the musculo-skeletal framework. In the process, the fog of mystique lifts, and the many abstruse concepts of Taijiquan become clear. Taijiquan training is physical at the initial phase, but the slow-motion exercise nurtures a meditative discipline of the mind. As it progresses, the soft methodology grows into one of building qi-energy, and then the practice becomes more internalized. The process fortifies the body with qi and cultivates a holistic balance of the organ systems. The book explains how the training methodology, in pursuing Taiji balance, leads to the development of a highly refined strength called neijin (inner strength). By incorporating the training of "silk-reeling energy" in Taiji balance, the practitioner develops the coiling power (chanrao jin) that underlies the magic of Taijiquan kungfu.
