Book excerpt: 'The Inheritors: An Extravagant Story', written by Joseph Conrad and Ford Madox Ford, is a quasi-science fiction novel that explores the corrupting influence of modernity on British aristocracy in the early 20th century. The novel uses the metaphor of the "fourth dimension" to illustrate the societal shift towards cold materialism and expediency. The novel's narrator, an aspiring writer, experiences a similar personal transformation, leaving him feeling like he has lost everything. The novel follows the story of Arthur, an English writer, who meets a fascinating woman claiming to be from the Fourth Dimension, and her plan to "inherit the earth". The woman takes on different identities and invades Arthur's down-on-their-luck aristocratic family by financing improvements to their estate, and becomes more dazzlingly beautiful and desirable with each appearance.

Book excerpt: "A decade in the making, The Inheritors tracks three ordinary South Africans over fifty years in a sweeping, exquisitely written look at what really happens after a country resolves to end white supremacy. Dipuo grew up on the south side of the mine dump that separated Johannesburg's Black townships from the white-only city. Some nights she hiked to the top. On the other side were glittering lights as well as, she knew, prejudice and hubris; on her side there was dust but also love. To a South African teenager in the 1980s-even an anti-apartheid activist like Dipuo-the divide appeared eternal. But then, in 1994, the world's last explicitly segregationist regime collapsed to make way for something unprecedented. The end of apartheid carried South Africa past a point the United States and Europe are still moving slowly towards: the ascent to political, cultural, and intellectual power of members of the demographic groups the countries once colonized or enslaved. The Inheritors weaves together the stories of Dipuo, her daughter Malaika, and Christo-one of the last White South Africans drafted to fight for apartheid as the system crumbled around him-to consider what happens when people once locked into certain kinds of power relations find their status shifting. With intimate reporting, keen psychological insight, and luminous prose, the book probes how everyday people grapple with great social change, exploring questions that preoccupy not only South Africans but so many of us today: How can we let go of our individual and national pasts? How should old debts be paid? How much sympathy do we owe one another? And how does a person live an honorable life in a society that-for both better and worse-they no longer recognize?"--

Book excerpt: Lohia & Co—one of India’s largest commodity traders, the country’s biggest jute supplier, owner of tea estates, as well as cement, steel, shipping and motor cycle firms, and its own insurance arm—is in trouble. Now a strike, led by ageing Marxist trade union leader Hirenmoy Chakroborty, is destabilizing its Calcutta headquarters—and Aruna the bitter, power-hungry sister of Hari Lohia, the head of the dynasty, is using the opportunity to launch a covert takeover of the business with the help of her two ambitious sons. But Hari Lohia, who single-handedly built up Lohia & Co from a tiny jute trader in the crowded alleys of Barabazar to a sprawling global conglomerate, is not willing to let go of his empire so easily. He comes from a family of survivors, ancestors who moved across the country from Rajasthan with nothing and built their fortunes from scratch. And he discovers unlikely allies in this last great battle he has to fight—Anjali, his tough, cynical sister, a fiery opponent of Aruna’s; and Shivani, his beautiful, rebellious daughter who has always been too busy having love affairs to pay attention to her father’s business. Who will lose? Who will win? And most importantly—will the house of Lohia fall like a pack of cards? Moving from the crumbling offices of Calcutta to hedge funds in Hong Kong, from the Mumbai stock market to nineteenth century Rajasthan, and boasting an enormous cast of characters, The Inheritors is quite simply sensational.

This book was released on 2021-01-01 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the author of Books like - Heart of Darkness - Lord Jim - Heart of Darkness and Selected Short Fiction - The Secret Agent - Nostromo - Heart of Darkness and The Secret Sharer - Heart of Darkness and Other Tales - The Shadow-Line - The Secret Sharer - Victory - Tales Of Hearsay - Under Western Eyes - The Arrow Of Gold - The Inheritors - Tales Of Unrest About the Book: The Inheritors was the first collaboration between Conrad and Ford. They were introduced by Edward Garnett. The initial collaboration was to be on Ford’s unpublishable novel Seraphina but other projects kept them from it. Finally, they collaborated on this novel. Ford wrote most of it, with Conrad doing the editing. Conrad did not think very highly of it – I set myself to look upon the thing as a sort of skit upon the political (?!) novel. Unlike much of Conrad’s writing but like much of Ford’s it seems somewhat unfocussed, skipping about, rather than concentrating on a specific plot. It starts off with a long dialogue – Conrad would customarily start off by setting the scene or by introducing the characters. We do not know who the two characters are – one is a woman of indeterminate origin and another the narrator – an author. The narrator goes on to the house of Callan, a great novelist, where he is engaged to write a kind of series of studies of celebrities chez eux for Fox, who runs a journal“. The woman, of course, turns up at Callan’s house – her name is the improbable Miss Etchingham Granger – and she pretends to be the sister of our narrator (also called Etchingham Granger). She, like other characters, is a Fourth Dimensionist, the young trendies Ford is eager to attack. Her portrait is far from flattering and is a clear indication of the misogyny of both Ford and Conrad. We start to get in a complicated and not very convincing plot, involving Gurnard, the”coming man” in politics, a foreign financier called Duc de Mersch and Greenland (the country). Our hero – a political naïve, like both Ford and Conrad – somehow gets involved in this plot. Political and financial corruption in high places are attacked by Ford and Conrad, using only thinly disguised characters. Gurnard is clearly Joseph Chamberlain, his political companion, Churchill, is not Churchill but Balfour, while Fox is Lord Northcliffe and the Duc de Mersch Leopold II of Belgium. The influence of Conrad can be seen in the attack on Leopold for the atrocities in the Congo. Frankly, the plot is uninteresting as neither author knows much about either politics or finance, none of the characters is particularly sympathetic and, by the time, we get to the end, we really do not care for the fate of Churchill, Fox, Gurnard and Co. Both men would write far better novels About the Author: Joseph Conrad, original name Józef Teodor Konrad Korzeniowski, (born December 3, 1857, Berdichev, Ukraine, Russian Empire [now Berdychiv, Ukraine]—died August 3, 1924, Canterbury, Kent, England), English novelist and short-story writer of Polish descent, whose works include the novels Lord Jim (1900), Nostromo (1904), and The Secret Agent (1907) and the short story “Heart of Darkness” (1902). During his lifetime Conrad was admired for the richness of his prose and his renderings of dangerous life at sea and in exotic places. But his initial reputation as a masterful teller of colourful adventures of the sea masked his fascination with the individual ...(100 of 2481 words). Joseph Conrad was a Polish-British writer regarded as one of the greatest novelists to write in the English language. Though he did not speak English fluently until his twenties, he came to be regarded a master prose stylist who brought a non-English sensibility into English literature.
