Download or read book A Study on the Effects of Industry and Time on Profitability in Listed South African Companies written by Simon Morgan and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The determinants of the antecedents of the profitable performance of companies are a field of interest which should be at the forefront of the mind of the executives of any profit making institution. Industry structure and its effects on profitability have long been a focus of study in the management literature. This study focuses on the effects industry and time have on profitability in the South African business milieu. A quantitative research method was followed whereby three different profitability ratios were calculated across two hundred and eighty nine listed South African entities over a ten year period to determine if there is a statistically significant link between industry effect and profitability as well as time and profitability. The study was undertaken in the form of hypotheses tests to determine if such links did exist. In the empirical evidence resulting form the hypothesis tests, three out of the three tests for industry effect on profitability were found to be statistically significant and two of the three tests for the effect of time on profitability were found to be statistically significant. These results show that in South African listed companies, industry has a statistically significant effect on profitability. While the effect of time on profitability does appear to be statistically significant however this is dependent on the types of profitability measures used.

Book The Medium long Term Impact of Cross border Investments Into Sub Saharan Africa by Listed South African Companies

Download or read book The Medium long Term Impact of Cross border Investments Into Sub Saharan Africa by Listed South African Companies written by Pieter Christiaan De Jager and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research into whether the medium-long term impact on shareholders' value of acquiring companies engaged in cross-border merger and acquisition transactions (CBMA) into Sub-Saharan Africa. By focussing on companies listed on the Johannesburg Securities Exchange (JSE) and testing the general hypothesis whether the shareholders of acquiring companies earn statistically significant positive or negative returns within the medium-long term after the announcement date of a cross-border merger and acquisition transaction. Out of a total of 10,167 merger and acquisition transactions over the eight-year period between 2000 and 2007, only 12 cross-border mergers and acquisitions into Sub-Saharan Africa satisfied all the selection criteria. By exhaustive application of the single-factor market model to calculate the regression formula using 4 years of historical share price performance data, the results suggested that statistically significant negative weighted average abnormal returns for shareholders are consistently present over the event window. The study on the medium-long term event window starting 21 days prior to the first public announce of the transactions and continued up to 252 trading days after the announcement date. Thus it satisfied common critique by researchers about the true value of short term event studies for companies and their shareholders. Copyright.

Book Ownership and Governance of Companies

Download or read book Ownership and Governance of Companies written by Jonathan Michie and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-06-29 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Apartheid South Africa was often thought to run in the interests of the business elite. Yet 27 years after apartheid, those business interests remain largely entrenched. Why? Did the South African business community play a role in engineering this outcome – perhaps recognising the apartheid era was over, and jumping ship in time? Conversely, the mission of the ANC was widely perceived to be to shift wealth and power into the hands of the whole community. Yet despite ‘black empowerment’ measures, corporate ownership remains largely in white hands – and certainly in the hands of an elite few, even though no longer restricted to whites. This picture is replicated across the global south, where corporate ownership tends to be concentrated in the hands of an elite, rather than being more democratically spread. Why have alternative corporate forms not been pursued more vigorously, with ownership in the hands of customers, employees, and local communities? In the case of South Africa, where the majority of customers and employees are black, this could have delivered on the ANC’s mission to replace the apartheid era with a democratic one – in terms of wealth, incomes and power, as well as in terms of voting and civic rights. This edited volume explores all these questions and looks at ways to align corporate forms with economic and social goals. The chapters in this book were originally published as special issues of International Review of Applied Economics.

Book A Study of the Relationship Between Market Share and Profitability in Listed South African Retail Companies

Download or read book A Study of the Relationship Between Market Share and Profitability in Listed South African Retail Companies written by Mutshinyani Magoro and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The relationship between market share and profitability has been the subject of academic research for so many years, yet it remains a generalisation which has been over-extended and accepted without acknowledgement of all its attributes. This research intended to contribute to the literature by aiding further understanding of the relationship between profitability and market share. Specifically, the aim of this research was to determine whether there is a relationship between market share and profitability within South African retail companies. The research aimed to establish if there was a strong relationship between market share (represented by the percentage that companies own in a market) and profitability (represented by return on asset, return on equity and return on capital employed). In addition, the study wanted to understand if companies that grow market share by acquiring other companies are ranked higher than companies that grow organically. The quantitative study was conducted through the utilisation of hypotheses testing as a research mechanism. The key population considered for this research was listed organisations operating in a retail sectors that are or were listed on the Main Board of the Johannesburg Securities Exchange (JSE) during the 5 year period from 2004 to 2008. The sample size consisted of 8 companies. The research was conducted using secondary data. The key results of the research show that there is no relationship between market share and profitability. However, the results of this research can not be generalised due to small sample size.

Book The Impact of Broad Based Black Economic Empowerment on the Financial Performance of Companies Listed on the JSE

Download or read book The Impact of Broad Based Black Economic Empowerment on the Financial Performance of Companies Listed on the JSE written by Ashley Mathura and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research is aimed at finding empirical evidence to support the relationship between Broad-based Black Economic Empowerment (BBBEE) compliance and the financial performance of South African companies on the JSE. An independent measure of the BEE score was obtained from the Empowerdex Top Empowerment Companies (TEC) ranking from 2004 to 2009. 14 sectors on the JSE were selected to ensure inclusion of all major industries in South Africa. A total of 209 companies were selected, and the multivariate exploratory technique of Cluster Analysis was used. The predictor variable of the company's BEE status was then compared to a number of financial performance indicators such as annual share price, price-tobook value ratio and the price-to-earnings ratio (i.e. the outcome variables). By standardising the variables of the BEE score and using Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR), the k-means Clustering method yielded four interpretable clusters with 15, 64, 95 and 35 companies respectively. The finding indicate that only in the case of the cluster of companies that increased it's BEE score, were all three profitability measures significantly different and, according to the means, in the direction of higher profitability. However, there were no significant differences in the results to support the proposition that low-BEE scores of companies had a negative impact on their profitability and their firm's value over time.

Book Culture Leadership and Organizations

Download or read book Culture Leadership and Organizations written by Robert J. House and published by SAGE Publications. This book was released on 2004-04-29 with total page 849 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Culture, Leadership, and Organizations reports the results of a ten-year research program, the Global Leadership and Organizational Behavior Effectiveness (GLOBE) research program. GLOBE is a long-term program designed to conceptualize, operationalize, test, and validate a cross-level integrated theory of the relationship between culture and societal, organizational, and leadership effectiveness. A team of 160 scholars worked together since 1994 to study societal culture, organizational culture, and attributes of effective leadership in 62 cultures. Culture, Leadership, and Organizations: The GLOBE Study of 62 Societies reports the findings of the first two phases of GLOBE. The book is primarily based on the results of the survey of over 17,000 middle managers in three industries: banking, food processing, and telecommunications, as well as archival measures of country economic prosperity and the physical and psychological well-being of the cultures studied. GLOBE has several distinguishing features. First, it is truly a cross-cultural research program. The constructs were defined, conceptualized, and operationalized by the multicultural team of researchers. Second, the industries were selected through a polling of the country investigators, and the instruments were designed with the full participation of the researchers representing the different cultures. Finally, the data in each country were collected by investigators who were either natives of the cultures studied or had extensive knowledge and experience in that culture. A unique feature of this book is that while it is an edited book and many experts have written the different chapters, unlike other edited books, it is a fully integrated, seamless, and cohesive book covering the many aspects of the theory underpinning the GLOBE.

Book International Equity Exchange Traded Funds

Download or read book International Equity Exchange Traded Funds written by Tomasz Miziołek and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-09-23 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the economic foundation of international equity investments providing a practical guide to invest in international equity exchange-traded funds (ETFs). It shows how to gain exposure to foreign stock markets through both theoretical foundations of international diversification and in-depth characteristics of global, regional, country-specific, and international sector/thematic ETFs. Unlike other books in the field which broadly discuss different aspects of the ETF market, this book explores one specific market segment, offering the first in-depth and state-of-the-art analysis of international equity ETFs and including, in particular, ETFs with global, regional, single-country, and international sector/thematic exposures. The number and variety of such financial instruments are constantly growing. Hence, it seems obvious that there is an urgent need for a book that will help investors who are willing to diversify their portfolios outside the domestic market—in both developed and emerging/frontier markets. International Equity Exchange-Traded Funds presents a comprehensive review of investment possibilities offered by international ETFs for stock market investors.

Book Environmental Social and Governance ESG Investing

Download or read book Environmental Social and Governance ESG Investing written by John Hill and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2020-01-30 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) Investing: A Balanced Analysis of the Theory and Practice of a Sustainable Portfolio presents a balanced, thorough analysis of ESG factors as they are incorporated into the investment process. An estimated 25% of all new investments are in ESG funds, with a global total of $23 trillion and the U.S. accounting for almost $9 trillion. Many advocate the sustainability goals promoted by ESG, while others prefer to maximize returns and spend their earnings on social causes. The core problem facing those who want to promote sustainability goals is to define sustainability investing and measure its returns. This book examines theories and their practical implications, illuminating issues that other books leave in the shadows. Provides a dispassionate examination of ESG investing Presents the historical arguments for maximizing returns and competing theories to support an ESG approach Reviews case studies of empirical evidence about relative returns of both traditional and ESG investment approaches
