Book German Artists and Hitler s Mind

Download or read book German Artists and Hitler s Mind written by Wayne Andersen and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written in clear prose, Wayne Andersen's expansive text accounts for all of modern Germany's major artists -- the Impressionists Max Liebermann and Lovis Corinth, the Expressionists Edvard Munch, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, Erich Heckel, and Max Pechstein, the post-World War I George Grosz, Otto Dix, and Rudolf Schlichter, and the less classifiable Max Beckmann, Paula Modersohn-Becker, Kathe Kollwitz, Oskar Kokoschka, and Frans Marc. Theatre and cabaret life are treated in equal measure to the visual arts, with rich coverage of Ibsen's Ghosts, Brecht's The Jungle of Cities, and the prototype of modern filmmaking, The Cabinet of Dr Caligari. Andersen assigns his challenging lines of attack to radical issues that established in Germany the essential first wave of twentieth-century avant-garde art and culture. Insisting that German art is masculine and prone to violence, he formulates a compelling explanation for how artists and defensive art critics convert violence into art as a pretence to mirroring society. He associates Lustmord (sex-murder) imagery in German art, theatre, and cabaret entertainment with the sexuality of war. He sees Germania's primal barbarism in German painting infused with the rise of Germany's Nacktkultur (nudist cults). A desensitising nakedness replaces sublimated nudity. The innocent nakedness of youth offers an opportunity for cultural renewal and a symbol of physical power.

Book excerpt: Max Pechstein (1881-1955) is one of the most prominent German artists of the twentieth century, not least because of his crucial role in the breakthrough of German Expressionism. This long overdue biography combines the portrayal of an outstanding artistic personality with the story of an individual German who struggled through the political upheavals of his time. Pechstein's work is presented in the cultural context of museum politics and art associations, art dealers and critics, market forces and cultural trends.

Book Whitman Between Impressionism and Expressionism

Download or read book Whitman Between Impressionism and Expressionism written by Erik Ingvar Thurin and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Whitman between Impressionism and Expressionism is the first comprehensive and systematic study of Whitman's language experiment in relation to his artistic and philosophical purposes. Author Erik Thurin's focus is determined by the discovery that his linguistic innovations can be described and interpreted in terms of a dual approach closely resembling what is now called impressionism and expressionism. A number of theoretical and quasi-theoretical remarks in the 1855 preface to Leaves of Grass and the poetry itself suggest that this approach is deliberate. Thurin postulates that it must be related to his determination to be "the poet of the body" and "the poet of the soul," impressionism representing a tendency to passively and objectively record incoming sense data, expressionism the urge to transform and use them in "the efflux of the soul." Whitman is, in fact, prophetically adumbrating a new ideal of health and power, a modern personality that is to balance body and soul. It is autobiography anthropologically conceived." "Discourse analysis allows Thurin to conclude that Whitman's poems and long sections of poems fall into three categories: (1) pure impressionism, (2) pure expressionism, and (3) a combination of both."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Throughout Ernst Ludwig Kirchner's career, one unifying theme emerges--the search for what he saw as unadulterated and primal. This volume explores the far-reaching influence of non-western art on Kirchner's oeuvre and the importance of his life in Davos, Switzerland, where he found a temporary peace despite the impending threat of censorship by the Nazis. Throughout the chapters of this book are reproductions of Kirchner's paintings as well as his sculptures, woodcuts, sketches, drawings, textiles, carvings, and furniture. Archival material in the form of letters and diary entries offer an unprecedented look into the artist's creative process. This study of one of the most talented and influential German Expressionist painters draws compelling conclusions about the influence of the imaginary on his work.

Book The Neo primitivist Turn

Download or read book The Neo primitivist Turn written by Victor Li and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years the concept of 'the primitive' has been the subject of strong criticism; it has been examined, unpacked, and shown to signify little more than a construction or projection necessary for establishing the modernity of the West. The term 'primitive' continues, however, to appear in contemporary critical and cultural discourse, begging the question: Why does primitivism keep reappearing even after it has been uncovered as a modern myth? In The Neo-primitivist Turn, Victor Li argues that this contentious term was never completely banished and that it has in fact reappeared under new theoretical guises. An idealized conception of 'the primitive,' he contends, has come to function as the ultimate sign of alterity. Li focuses on the works of theorists like Jean Baudrillard, Jean-François Lyotard, Marianna Torgovnick, Marshall Sahlins, and Jürgen Habermas in order to demonstrate that primitivism continues to be a powerful presence even in those works normally regarded as critical of the concept. Providing close readings of the ways in which the premodern or primitive is strategically deployed in contemporary critical writings, Li's interdisciplinary study is a timely and forceful intervention into current debates on the politics and ethics of otherness, the problems of cultural relativism, and the vicissitudes of modernity.
