Book Institutional Factors and Students Retention

Download or read book Institutional Factors and Students Retention written by Rafael Alverio and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2010 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research was conducted with the intent of analyzing the factors that determine the desertion of students at a school or university. In order to simplify the study, students that were enrolled in the Airway Science Program that decided to abandon their studies were utilized. I could also demonstrate the importance that the educational goals have in the students and how they could be affected by the institutional factors. It is the preconception of knowing if the students that decided to abandon the program , did it to meet their academic goals or due to some institutional factor or variable that motivated the abandonment. The decision of abandoning a university or school affects the student and the institution itself. A student that decides to abandon school demonstrates that the quality of the education received does not conform with its expectations. The effectiveness of any educational institution is related to student involvement in learning. Every institution should accomplish student satisfaction with the services it offers.

This book was released on 2003 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Student retention continues to be a concern for two-year and four-year colleges and universities; there are a variety of factors contributing to the institutional attrition rates. The purpose of this study was to identify and examine factors associated with how freshman students enrolled in the First Year College (FYC), at North Carolina State University during the 1999 - 2000 academic year perceive their academic and social integration. The data for this research study was obtained using the College Student Experience Questionnaire (CSEQ). The dependent variable in this research study was grade point average (GPA) of the respondents. The independent variables for this study were the academic and social factors associated with the perceptions the respondents have regarding their academic and social integration. These academic and social factors are based on the 13 activity scales on the CSEQ that measure the quality of effort known to be important to student development. They are: clubs and organizations; library; computer and information; technology; course learning; writing experiences; art, music, theater; science and quantitative experiences; experiences with faculty; campus facilities; personal experiences; student acquaintances; topic of conversation; and information in conversations. The results revealed that there is no significant difference between male and female student involvement in organizations. Both male and female students in the FYC participated in campus clubs and organizations equally. A correlation analysis revealed a positive relationship, indicating that as FYC student's GPA increases the amount of academic integration increases. The quality of effort score for Course Learning, Writing Experiences, and Scientific and Quantitative Experiences had the highest correlations significant with GPA. In reference to social integration, a correlation analysis revealed that as the student's GPA increases the amount of social integration increases. The f.

Book excerpt: The academic and social integration of first-generation college students into institutions of higher education continues to be a topic of concern for university administrators, faculty, and staff. Students enter college with different background traits and experiences as well as have different college experiences that can either permit or prohibit their ability to integrate into the college environment (Choy, 2001; Pascarella & Terenzini, 1983). Academic and social integration are two key factors used in predicting whether or not a student will persist from one academic year to the next (Cabrera, Nora, & Castaneda, 1993; Ishitani, 2003). This is especially important for first-generation college students. A student's ability to navigate the college system determines their ability to academically and socially integrate. By understanding how the different background characteristics, pre-college experiences, college experiences, college environments, and academic performances of first-generation college students can influence academic and social integration, universities could increase retention and graduation rates. The development of comprehensive academic support programs by institutions of higher education has been one strategy used to improving the integration of first-generation college students. The purpose of this study was to investigate the longitudinal impact of comprehensive academic support programs on the academic and social integration of first-generation college students during the 2008 academic year at a large public research university. This study employed a quantitative research design using variables from the 2008 CIRP Freshman Survey and the 2009 YFCY Survey. Astin's Input-Environment-Outcome model (1991) was used to examine the impact of the independent measures selected. The analysis plan utilized statistical weighting, factor analysis, descriptive statistics, and multivariate regressions. The results of this study indicated: 1) first-generation FYE students were not academically integrated into college by the end of the first year but participation in a comprehensive academic support program did have a positive impact on their academic integration; and 2) first-generation FYE students were socially integrated into college by the end of the first year and participation in a comprehensive academic support program did have a positive impact on their social integration. These findings have implications for theoretical frameworks, secondary education, and large public research institutions.

Book Campus Service Workers Supporting First Generation Students

Download or read book Campus Service Workers Supporting First Generation Students written by Georgina Guzmán and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-11-29 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique collection of testimonials, critical essays, and first-hand accounts demonstrates the significant contribution of campus service workers in supporting the retention and success of first-generation college students. Using a Freirean framework to ground individual stories, the text identifies ways in which campus workers connect with students, provide informal mentorship, and offer culturally relevant support during students’ transition to college and beyond. Drawing on a range of interviews, case studies, and research studies, emphasis is placed on the unique challenges faced by first-generation and minority students such as cultural alienation, imposter syndrome, language barriers, and financial insecurity. Ultimately, the text dismantles notions of social hierarchies that separate workers and college students and encourages institutions to invest in these workers and their contribution to student well-being and success. This book will benefit researchers, academics, and educators with an interest in the higher education and student affair practice and higher education administration more broadly. Those specifically interested in multicultural education and the study of race and ethnicity within US higher educational contexts will also benefit from this book.
