Book excerpt: The extrusion temperature and cooling rate after extrusion were varied for round to round axisymmetric extrusions of the Beta 111 titanium alloy. The microstructures after extrusion and after heat treatment were examined both by optical and transmission electron microscopy and correlated with the room temperature mechanical properties. Heat treatment following extrusion consisted of either aging only or a solution treatment followed by aging. In contrast to air cooling after extrusion, direct water quenching immediately after extrusion was effective in retaining a significant amount of dislocation structure from the hot deformation, the effect being greater at the lowest extrusion temperature. This retained dislocation structure effectively promoted the formation of alpha during aging and retarded the tendency for the omega phase to form. The effect was greatest when specimens were aged without the intermediate solution treatment. The greater amount and finer distribution of alpha obtained in this manner resulted in significantly higher tensile strengths, quite acceptable values of RA, but with a small loss in fracture toughness. For the extrusion temperature range investigated, the extrusion pressures for the Beta 111 titanium alloy were somewhat lower than for the older, more well established beta titanium alloy. he extrusion pressures for Beta 111 were also lower than for alpha and alpha plus beta titanium alloys, for temperature ranges where they have significant amounts of alpha present. Book excerpt: The effects of extrusion and cold swaging on the structure and properties of Beta III titanium were investigated; die loads for extrusion were determined at various temperatures and compared to die loads for other alloys; the effects of age hardening after various thermal and mechanical treatments were studied. Optimum tensile properties were obtained in extruded and aged material when the extrusion temperature was low and the cooling rate was high. The die loads during extrusion compared favorably with those of other titanium alloys. Cold swaging prior to age hardening increased hardness and tensile strength but caused embrittlement when the amount of deformation was small. Ductility was restored by large amounts of cold swaging. Fracture toughness was universely proportional to ultimate tensile strength. These observations are explained on the basis of metallography, electron microscopy, and x-ray diffraction. (Author).

Book excerpt: The inter-relation of extrusion process variables with mechanical properties and microstructure is analyzed for three titanium alloys (Ti-5Al-2.5Sn, Ti-6Al-4V and Ti-13V-11Cr-3Al). Information is obtained from duplicate billets which were extruded at same conditions with one extruded bar allowed to air cool and the other bar water quenched immediately after extrusion. Results indicate that significant reduction in deformation loads can be achieved in alpha and alpha-beta titanium alloys by processing them in the beta temperature range. Resultant metallurgical structures and mechanical properties (room temperature tensile and Charpy V notch impact) are found to not be significantly affected by process variables other than preheat temperature and product cooling rate. In alpha and alpha-beta alloys, the room temperature strength properties of beta processed and water quenched product is significantly improved over those of beta processed and air cooled product and somewhat improved over those for alpha-beta processed followed by either air cooling or water quenching. Mechanical properties from the beta alloy are not significantly affected by process temperature or by product cooling rate except for some anomalous behavior in the 2050F processing temperature range. Book excerpt: An open die, pancake forging study was conducted to determine the interplay of beta processing variables (temperature, deformation, and cooling rate) in controlling the as-worked (wrought) microstructure of Ti 6Al-4V. Emphasis was placed on obtaining the finest wrought beta structure and/or finest recrystallized beta grain size. Both macrostructures and microstructures were prepared and observed optically. It was found that the finest wrought structure was obtained by increasing the amount of deformation at the higher temperature for either air cooling or water quenching. Recrystallization ensues if the material is held in the beta field immediately after forging. (Author).
