Book Biomonitoring of Trace Aquatic Contaminants

Download or read book Biomonitoring of Trace Aquatic Contaminants written by David J.H. Phillips and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1994 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Twenty years ago, researchers wishing to identify contaminated areas in aquatic environments generally took water samples, and analysed them badly (as we have since discovered) for a few "pollutants" which were of topical note at the time (and which could be quantified by the methods then available). Today, the use of aquatic organisms as biomonitors in preference to water analysis has become commonplace, and many national and interna tional programmes exist around the world involving such studies. We believe that this trend will continue, and have complete faith in the methodology (when it is employed correctly). We hope that the following text assists in some part in attaining this goal, such that the quality of our most basic global resource -water - is adequately protected in the future. DAVE PHILLIPS, PHIL RAINBOW England, March 1992 vii Acknowledgements Our thanks for contributions to this book are due to several individuals and groups, for varying reasons. Firstly, a co-authored book is always a triumph, and we trust that the following text is an acceptable compromise of the views of two individual authors, on a complex and developing topic. Secondly, many of the ideas herein have crystallised over the last two decades as the field has grown, and we are individually and collectively grateful to a number of researchers for their insight and assistance.

Book Photobiogeochemistry of Organic Matter

Download or read book Photobiogeochemistry of Organic Matter written by Khan M.G. Mostofa and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-15 with total page 919 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Photoinduced processes, caused by natural sunlight, are key functions for sustaining all living organisms through production and transformation of organic matter (OM) in the biosphere. Production of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) from OM is a primary step of photoinduced processes, because H2O2 acts as strong reductant and oxidant. It is potentially important in many aquatic reactions, also in association with photosynthesis. Allochthonous and autochthonous dissolved organic matter (DOM) can be involved into several photoinduced or biological processes. DOM subsequently undergoes several physical, chemical, photoinduced and biological processes, which can be affected by global warming. This book is uniquely structured to overview some vital issues, such as: DOM; H2O2 and ROOH; HO•; Degradation of DOM; CDOM, FDOM; Photosynthesis; Chlorophyll; Metal complexation, and Global warming, as well as their mutual interrelationships, based on updated scientific results.

  • ISBN : 1461236266
  • Pages : 380 pages

Download or read book Ivermectin and Abamectin written by William C. Campbell and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ivermectin and abamectin, members of the avermectin family of compounds, were introduced to the market in the 1980's as a veterinary antiparasitic drug and agricultural pesticide, respectively. Their acceptance and commercial success have been remarkable; both are highly effective and in worldwide use. The efficacy of ivermectin in river blindness has expanded the interest in its use in human medicine. In response to the intense scientific and industrial interest in ivermectin and abamectin and the likelihood that they will be forerunners of an expanding family of drugs, this comprehensive monograph satisfies the need for a review and synthesis of current knowledge about the use of these substances in crop protection as well as in cattle, sheep, swine, horses, dogs, cats, birds, fish, reptiles, and in man. This overview presents chemical, biochemical, and microbiological data, as well as pharmacological, safety, and environmental aspects and covers practical use of the compounds as antiparasitic and pesticide agents, as well as the available safety data that have emerged from the clinical experience with human applications.

Book Restoration of Aquatic Ecosystems

Download or read book Restoration of Aquatic Ecosystems written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1992-01-01 with total page 580 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aldo Leopold, father of the "land ethic," once said, "The time has come for science to busy itself with the earth itself. The first step is to reconstruct a sample of what we had to begin with." The concept he expressedâ€"restorationâ€"is defined in this comprehensive new volume that examines the prospects for repairing the damage society has done to the nation's aquatic resources: lakes, rivers and streams, and wetlands. Restoration of Aquatic Ecosystems outlines a national strategy for aquatic restoration, with practical recommendations, and features case studies of aquatic restoration activities around the country. The committee examines: Key concepts and techniques used in restoration. Common factors in successful restoration efforts. Threats to the health of the nation's aquatic ecosystems. Approaches to evaluation before, during, and after a restoration project. The emerging specialties of restoration and landscape ecology.

Book Principles of Ecotoxicology Second Edition

Download or read book Principles of Ecotoxicology Second Edition written by C.H. Walker and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2003-09-02 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past decade ecotoxicology has emerged as a distinct subject of interdisciplinary character. Courses in ecotoxicology reflect this and are taught by specialists in chemistry and biochemistry through to population genetics and ecology. As the first textbook to incorporate all relevant aspects of chemistry, biochemistry, toxicology, physiology, population ecology and population genetics, the first edition of this book proved to be well received across several industries. Featuring fully revised text and new illustrations, Principles of Ecotoxicology identifies the major classes of organic and inorganic pollutants, their properties, release and environmental fate, and transport in air, water and along food chains, before considering the effects that they might have upon individual organisms and ultimately whole ecosystems. This timely second edition of Principles of Ecotoxicology incorporates data collected since the first edition on subjects of current research and media interest such as organochloride pesticides, endocrine disruptors, aquatic toxicity, industrial waste and ecotoxicity testing.

Book Methods of Environmental Data Analysis

Download or read book Methods of Environmental Data Analysis written by C. N. Hewitt and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-01-03 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT SERIES The current expansion of both public and scientific interest in environ mental issues has not been accompanied by a commensurate production of adequate books, and those which are available are widely variable in approach and depth. The Environmental Management Series has been established with a view to co-ordinating a series of volumes dealing with each topic within the field in some depth. It is hoped that this Series will provide a uniform and quality coverage and that, over a period of years, it will build up to form a library of reference books covering most of the major topics within this diverse field. It is envisaged that the books will be of single, or dual authorship, or edited volumes as appropriate for respective topics. The level of presentation will be advanced, the books being aimed primarily at a research/consultancy readership. The coverage will include all aspects of environmental science and engineering pertinent to manage ment and monitoring of the natural and man-modified environment, as well as topics dealing with the political, t:conomic, legal and social con siderations pertaining to environmental management.
