Book excerpt: More and more project teams are formed to achieve organizational objectives as organizations generally recognize the importance and benefits of project teams. One of the outcomes working in a project team is the proliferation of Team Shared Mental Models (TSMM). It is critical to examine the antecedents of TSMM which is the aim of this study as TSMM by itself can contribute to project team learning and others. However, it is unclear from literature whether both leadership roles and team building & participation can influence TSMM concurrently especially in a project setting study whereby there is resource and time constraint compare to normal work teams which are ongoing and operational in nature. This study has developed a research model underpinned on Cohen and Bailey's (1997) Team Effectiveness Framework to empirically analyze how leadership roles and team building & participation can predict TSMM. Based on 201 random sample responses from project managers in Malaysia, findings suggest that leadership roles can influence TSMM indirectly via team building & participation. Knowledge contribution of this study is that project managers should invest extra efforts in team building & participation as it is the main contributor to TSMM.

Book excerpt: This report summarizes the results of a series of investigations that examined (a) the role of feedback processes as a leadership tool in team adaptation, (b) the influence of developmental work experiences on team and leader adaptability, and (c) the effects of combinations of leader qualities on the display of adaptation processes and performance in dynamic military and business settings. The results of these investigations indicated that (a) process-oriented, team level, and public feedback from leaders was most effective in facilitating team adaptation, particularly when team members possess high levels of cognitive skills; (b) developmental assignments are associated with growth in social competencies, but only when participating leaders have high levels of metacognitive skill, cognitive complexity, and tolerance for ambiguity; (c) social competencies influence leader adaptability, but only when the organizational climate supports innovation; and (d) several cognitive, social, and dispositional leader attributes were related singly and in combination to leader adaptability.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of leadership on teams' affective and cognitive processes, and the subsequent impact of these processes on team outcomes. Specifically, it was expected that transformational, contingent reward, and active and passive management-by-exception leadership would have differential impact on teamwork mental models and affect, which, in turn, would influence trust. Trust was hypothesized to influence perceived team performance and viability. The sample was composed of 148 soldiers in the Canadian Forces who were members of 32 military teams. Participants completed a questionnaire assessing their perception of the different variables. Because both leadership and teamwork mental models were conceptualized at the team level of analysis, and the remaining variables were conceptualized at the individual level of analysis, hierarchical linear modeling was used in order to test the hypotheses. Transformational leadership was positively associated with similarity of cognitions within teams, positive affect, and team viability. However, contrary to expectations, active and passive management-by-exception leadership were not related to either cognitions or affect. Furthermore, positive affect was positively associated with trust, whereas negative affect was negatively related to trust. Trust, in turn, was positively related to both perceived team performance and team viability. Finally, trust mediated the relations between affect and perceived team performance. Results are discussed in terms of their implications for leadership theory and practice.
