Book Hydrogen Related Degradation of Mechanical Properties of Titanium and Titanium Alloys

Download or read book Hydrogen Related Degradation of Mechanical Properties of Titanium and Titanium Alloys written by Kenzo Asaoka and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hydrogen can have a pronounced effect on the mechanical properties of titanium (Ti) and Ti alloys, such as deformation, fracture, and fatigue life. The delayed fracture of medical Ti alloy devices is commonly caused by hydrogen embrittlement. Experimentally, we confirmed that the degradation in the performance of Ni-Ti superelastic alloy is caused by the hydrogen absorption related with specific factors in vivo; i.e., hydrogen embrittlement is related to such factors as sustained stress, in vivo environment (pH and potential), and surface chemistry. In our research a thermal desorption gas spectrometer (TDS) was used to measure the hydrogen content in the alloys without fusion. The measured hydrogen concentration showed clearly that the hydrogen concentration affects considerably the degradation of the mechanical properties. It is unclear how the alloy can naturally absorb hydrogen under biological circumstances. However, it is suspected that the hydrogen absorption is related to galvanic currents, fretting corrosion, hydrogen ions in a biological fluid, and changes in pH under biostructures, biofilms, and tumors. It may lead to the degradation of their mechanical properties by hydrogen absorption in vivo. Also the processes of medical Ti alloy devices, such as pickling, are associated with their hydrogen content. Thus, the estimation of the hydrogen absorption in vivo in relation to surface features is required to evaluate its effect on such properties as fatigue and the service life of the Ni-Ti alloys used as medical devices.

Book The Kinetic and Mechanical Aspects of Hydrogen induced Failure in Metals

Download or read book The Kinetic and Mechanical Aspects of Hydrogen induced Failure in Metals written by Howard G. Nelson and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Premature hydrogen-induced failure observed to occur in many metal systems involves three stages of fracture: (1) crack initiation, (2) stable slow crack growth, and (3) unstable rapid crack growth. The presence of hydrogen at some critical location on the metal surface or within the metal lattice was shown to influence one or both of the first two stages of brittle fracture but has a negligible effect on the unstable rapid crack growth stage. The relative influence of the applied parameters of time, temperature, etc., on the propensity of a metal to exhibit hydrogen induced premature failure was investigated.

Book Investigation of Delayed cracking Phenomenon in Hydrogenated Unalloyed Titanium

Download or read book Investigation of Delayed cracking Phenomenon in Hydrogenated Unalloyed Titanium written by R. A. Wood and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three grades of unalloyed titanium were studied to determine the effect of variations in O and N contents on delayed cracking. The bar stock was analyzed for interstitial content, then vacuum annealed to remove most of the H. Large samples of the 1/2-in.-diam vaccum-annealed stock were subsequently hydrogenated to about 90 and 160 ppm H levels. Hydrogen-induced strainaging embrittlement at ambient temperatures in interstitial-containing alphi Ti was not indicated by the results of stress-rupture tests. The results indicate that strain-aging embrittlement does not occur in unalloyed Ti having up to 0.38 wt-% O with as much as 160 ppm H content. However, a noticable effect of H on notch sensitivity of the materials, in the alpha-annealed and especially in the beta-annealed conditions, was observed. It appears probable that H was concentrated in the critical areas by a thermaldiffusion process to create an ultrasensitive zone. Failure might have occurred subsequently as a result of simple overstressing, or by accidentally applied impact stresses, or by a more complicated low-cycle fatigue mechanism. (Author).

Book The Science Technology and Application of Titanium

Download or read book The Science Technology and Application of Titanium written by R. I. Jaffee and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-09-24 with total page 1225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Science, Technology and Application of Titanium contains the proceedings of an International Conference organized by the Institute of Metals, The Metallurgical Society of AIME, and the American Society for Metals in association with the Japan Institute of Metals and the Academy of Sciences of the USSR and held at the Royal Festival Hall in London, on May 21-24, 1968. The papers explore scientific and technological developments as well as applications of titanium and cover topics ranging from processing of titanium to its chemical and environmental behavior, physics, thermodynamics, and kinetics. Deformation and fracture, phase transformations and heat treatment, and alloying are also discussed. This book is comprised of 114 chapters and begins with an overview of the titanium industry in Europe and the United States. The reader is then introduced to primary and secondary fabrication of titanium; corrosion and oxidation; physical properties of titanium alloys; interaction of titanium with elements of the periodic system; and elastic interactions between dislocations and twin and grain boundaries in titanium. The crystallography of deformation twinning in titanium is also examined, along with superplasticity and transformation plasticity in titanium. The remaining chapters focus on interstitial strengthening of titanium alloys; mechanism of martensitic transformation in titanium and its alloys; phase relationships in titanium-oxygen alloys; strengthening of titanium alloys by shock deformation; and titanium hot forming. This monograph will be of interest to chemists and metallurgists.

Book The Influence of Hydrogen on the Multiaxial Fracture Behavior of Titanium Alloy Sheets

Download or read book The Influence of Hydrogen on the Multiaxial Fracture Behavior of Titanium Alloy Sheets written by B. J. Lograsso and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The influence of hydrogen on the deformation and fracture of three Ti alloys in the form of sheet has been examined as a function of the state of stress. Unnotched sheet specimens of alpha-phase Ti ( -60, 630, and 980 ppm H), Beta-phase Ti-30V ( -40 and 2000 ppm H), and alpha-Beta Ti-6Al-4V (30, 240, and 500 ppm H) have been investigated over deformation paths ranging from uniaxial to equibiaxial tension. Based on the measurements of the local fracture strains, the alpha-Ti data show a decrease in ductility with increasing hydrogen content as the degree of biaxiality of the tensile strain increases. Thus hydrogen embrittlement of Ti sheet is most severe under equibiaxial straining. In contrast, there is no pronounced effect of stress state on the localized necking and fracture behavior of either the Ti-30V or the Ti-6Al-4V at any of the hydrogen levels/microstructures examined. The results indicate that, even in equibiaxial tension, Ti alloys in the form of sheet are immune to hydrogen embrittlement if hydrides do not form. If hydrides are present, the embrittlement is most pronounced under those state of stress (e.g., plane strain and equibiaxial tension) which are characterized by large normal stresses.
