Book Ecological and Health Effects of Building Materials

Download or read book Ecological and Health Effects of Building Materials written by Junaid Ahmad Malik and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-08-07 with total page 590 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with the present adverse effects of using precarious building materials on the ecology and human health. Also, the detailed discussions on the novel and greener construction materials and their utilization as an alternative to the conventional harmful existing methods and materials are also presented in the subsequent chapters. This book helps to fill the research gaps in the existing prior-art knowledge in the field of sustainable construction and green building materials and methods giving due importance to ecology and health, specifically to the fields of sustainable structural engineering, sustainable geotechnical engineering, sustainable road engineering, etc. This book helps in achieving a sustainable environment through possible adoption of innovative and ecological construction practices. Hence, this book acts as a practical workbook, mainly for the academicians and practicing engineers who are willing to work toward the consecrated building industry. It is a well-established fact that the constructions of the engineering structures consume more and more earth resources than any other human activities in the world. In addition, the construction-related activities will produce several million tons of greenhouse gases, toxic emissions, water pollutants, and solid wastes. This creates a huge impact on environment and causes severe health issues on humans and animals. It is thus important to create an eco-friendly construction environment which can satisfy the ecological and health requirements.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Influence of Material on Architecture The "Influence of Material on Architecture" being the subject given X by the Council of the Royal Institute of Rritish Architects for the Essay Medal for 1896. the following Essay was submitted and obtained the Medal. It was then printed in the "Builder," and at the request of many friends is now published in book form along with the Illustrations. It must be remembered that it is an Essay, necessarily short by the rules of the Council, and was kept strictly within well-defined limits of space, so that many interesting by-paths have not been entered. It is, however, a subject of considerable importance and great fascination for Architects, and should appeal to an even wider circle. Book An Architecture of Care in South Africa

Download or read book An Architecture of Care in South Africa written by Nicholas Coetzer and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-07-10 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Architects care. It is foundational and germane to the discipline and practice of architecture. This book charts the way the Arts and Crafts Movement established the moral ethos of ‘an architecture of care’ that not only remains embedded in current discourse and practice but also that is being given a more vocal presence in our climate-crisis and social justice world. By way of ‘genealogical strands’ the book charts the origin of ‘architecture of care’ ideas in the Arts and Crafts Movement and their impact on the ‘other progeny’ architectural projects in South Africa over the past hundred years. These range from the translation of inglenooks into an armature architecture of ‘Dignified Places’ in Cape Town’s townships to the ethos of ‘upliftment’ and care that translates from Octavia Hill through to ‘correcting’ building regulations and eventually finding a less moralising and more transformative impact in the ‘Hostels to Homes’ project. The birth of design through context and climate in the Arts and Crafts Movement is demonstrated by the shift in South African houses from boxy cottages to solar- and nature-oriented ribbon plans as demonstrated through the work of Helmut Stauch and Norman Eaton. The dislocation of Arts and Crafts ideas to the Cape also demonstrated a limit to the valorising of vernacular architecture and its ‘against-globalization’ building materials whereby English architects promoted Cape Dutch settler architecture and denigrated African vernacular architecture. As a final ‘genealogical strand,’ the book demonstrates the coherence of moral instrumentality with the animism and affects potential of handmade buildings. Written for academics, students and researchers interested in architectural history, it is an eye-opening investigation into the role of architecture in society.

Download or read book Recycled Materials in Architecture History of Use Current Projects and Thoughts on Future Improvement written by Sandra Petkute and published by . This book was released on 2016-04-19 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Project Report from the year 2015 in the subject Art - Architecture / History of Construction, grade: 12 - Danish equals to A, University College of Northern Denmark (Technology), course: Architectural Technology, language: English, abstract: This research project is concerned with the question what influence and possibilities recycled materials have in building construction and architectural appearance. Material in this case by definition is substance that things are made of. Recycled materials automatically is represented as substances of things that are re-used for other or new purposes. The whole world is compiled out of billions of different materials, some of them are considered to be renewable and some of them unfortunately are unendurable, which leads to the coherent idea that sooner or later the Earth will lose the natural capability to meet human-society needs in terms of amount of existing materials. Most of materials used in building industry are either organic or human-made goods, which for the records, the majority of time are made out at least partly out of organic natural substances, for instance concrete, brick, glass. It has already been about 8 thousands years, how people are building houses which requires a certain amount of materials. With an increasing number of population, the quantity of building supplies gradually raises, which leads to the concern of dwindling natural sources. For that reason, increasing information amount is becoming essential, explaining the possible ways of saving the sources as well as why is it important, what outcomes may or may not possible come if we do or do not take certain actions. Since building industry is one of the dominating existing industries, it undoubtedly pursue to the idea that recycled materials usage into building industry for both construction and design might be one of the key actions to be taken in order to achieve sufficient results within the time and to aim more sustainable self-conscious so

Book The Complete Book on Construction Materials

Download or read book The Complete Book on Construction Materials written by NPCS Board of Consultants & Engineers and published by NIIR PROJECT CONSULTANCY SERVICES. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 635 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Construction industry is the largest consumer of material resources, of both the natural ones (like stone, sand, clay, lime) and the processed and synthetic ones. Each material which is used in the construction, in one form or the other is known as construction material (engineering material). No material, existing in the universe is useless; every material has its own field of application. Stone, bricks, timber, steel, lime, cement, metals etc. are some commonly used materials by civil engineers. Selection of building material, to be used in a particular construction, is done on the basis of strength, durability, appearance and permeability. The stone which is used in the construction works, in one form or another is always obtained from the rocks. The rocks may be classified in four ways; geological classification, physical classification, chemical classification and classification based on hardness of the stone. Various king of rocks come under these classification for example; igneous rocks, plutonic rocks, sedimentary rocks, silicious rocks, stratified rocks etc. brick is the most commonly used building material which is light, easily available, uniform in shape and size and relatively cheaper except in hilly areas. Bricks are easily moulded from plastic clays, also known as brick clays or brick earth. Bricks can be moulded by any of the three methods; soft mud process, stiff mud process and semi dry process. There are various kinds of bricks; specially shaped bricks, burnt clay bricks, heavy duty bricks, sand lime bricks, sewer bricks, refractory bricks, acid resistant bricks etc. lime is an important building material, it has been used since ancient times. Lime is used as a binding material in mortar and concretes, for plastering, for manufacturing glass, for preparing lime sand bricks, soil stabilization etc. Concrete is a construction material obtained by mixing a binder (such as cement, lime, mud etc.), aggregate (sand and gravel or shingle or crushed aggregate), and water in certain proportions. Based on the binding materials, the common concretes can be classified as; mud concrete, lime concrete, cement concrete and polymer concrete. World demand for cement and concrete additives is projected to increase 8.3 percent annually in next few years. This book basically deals with rock and stone, formation of rocks, classification of rocks, geological classification, metamorphism physical classification of rocks, chemical classification, classification based upon hardness of the stone composition of stone (rock forming minerals), igneous rock forming minerals, sedimentary rock forming minerals, texture of the rocks, types of fractures of rock, uses of stone, natural bed of stone, aluminium and magnesium alloys, mechanical properties of a partially cured resin, DMA characterization, chemical advancement of a partially cured resin, differential scanning calorimeter characterization, chemical mechanical relations, moisture content as a variable, wetability and water repellency of wood, fungal and termite resistance of wood etc. The book provide wide coverage of building materials such as stone, bricks, lime, mortars, concrete, asbestos, gray iron, cast iron, steel castings, aluminium, wood, architectural paints and so many others with their applications in building construction. The book is resourceful for all professionals related to construction field, technocrats, students and libraries. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: History of Construction Cultures Volume 1 contains papers presented at the 7ICCH – Seventh International Congress on Construction History, held at the Lisbon School of Architecture, Portugal, from 12 to 16 July, 2021. The conference has been organized by the Lisbon School of Architecture (FAUL), NOVA School of Social Sciences and Humanities, the Portuguese Society for Construction History Studies and the University of the Azores. The contributions cover the wide interdisciplinary spectrum of Construction History and consist on the most recent advances in theory and practical case studies analysis, following themes such as: - epistemological issues; - building actors; - building materials; - building machines, tools and equipment; - construction processes; - building services and techniques ; -structural theory and analysis ; - political, social and economic aspects; - knowledge transfer and cultural translation of construction cultures. Furthermore, papers presented at thematic sessions aim at covering important problematics, historical periods and different regions of the globe, opening new directions for Construction History research. We are what we build and how we build; thus, the study of Construction History is now more than ever at the centre of current debates as to the shape of a sustainable future for humankind. Therefore, History of Construction Cultures is a critical and indispensable work to expand our understanding of the ways in which everyday building activities have been perceived and experienced in different cultures, from ancient times to our century and all over the world.
