Book excerpt: This longitudinal study analyzed pretest-posttest data to (1) examine the influence of honors programs on first-year college students' critical thinking skills, (2) to determine whether students in honors programs receive more exposure to good practices in undergraduate education than their non-honors peers, and (3) to assess the effect of good practices on critical thinking. The quasi-experimental study also investigated whether the influence of honors programs on critical thinking skills varied in direction and magnitude for male versus female students and White versus students of color. To replicate an earlier study conducted by Seifert et al. (2007), the current study utilized data from a recent national study, the Wabash National Study of Liberal Arts Education. In order to fulfill this purpose, five research questions were addressed using descriptive statistics analysis and Ordinary Least Squared multiple regression. The current study included 1,824 first-year college students from 21 institutions that offered an honors program during the first-year of college. The treatment group (honors students) consisted of 306 students, whereas the control group (non-honors students) consisted of 1,518 students. The findings indicate that honors programs did not have a statistically significant effect on honors students' critical thinking or their exposure to good practices in undergraduate education. Furthermore, the effect of honors program participation did not differ in direction or magnitude for male versus female students and white versus students of color.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this mixed methods study was to identify the relationship between grit and anxiety within first-year honors college undergraduate students through student surveys, interviews, and archival data. Identifying this relationship may result in additional supportive honors programming in future years as well as add to the understanding of how to cultivate grit within the first-year experience. The researcher also hoped to identify how grit relates to both student engagement and academic performance, as well as coping strategies within the first-year experience. The research questions for this study were: (RQ1) What is the relationship between grit and trait anxiety in undergraduate first-year university honors students? (RQ2) How does trait anxiety show up in the experiences and coping strategies of first-year university honors students? (RQ3) How does grit and trait anxiety relate to student engagement and academic performance in first-year university honors students? The researcher's conceptual framework stems from three streams: anxiety and the first-year experience, grit, and Honors College. A 35-item survey was distributed to 300 first-year honors students; items included the Short Grit scale (Grit-S; Duckworth & Quinn, 2009), the t-anxiety portion of the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI; Spielberger et al., 2015), and questions regarding student engagement. A total of 62 students completed the survey. Six of these students also answered five semi-structured interview questions relating to their first-year anxieties, challenges, supports, and coping mechanisms. Results showed no significant correlation between grit and anxiety. The study's honors students have a higher trait-anxiety score of 44.78 than the average for college students (39.35; see Spielberger et al., 2015). Anxieties within first-year students are typically broken down into four categories: academic, social, professional, and personal. These subthemes were identified within the semi-structured interviews; anxiety is found in all components of the student experience. Coping mechanisms within first-year honors students for anxiety rely heavily on external partnerships (e.g., peer networks, resource centers, staff, faculty). Book excerpt: It has been assumed that community college students are comprised of students who are either not ready for the rigors of a four-year college experience and/or students who are only interested in receiving a degree in a technical field. With concerns of rising debt, largely associated with colleges being forced to turn to tuition as a major revenue source, the validity of these assumptions merits a better understanding to how the economic atmosphere has changed the demographics of students at a two-year institution, let alone the demographics of an honors student population. Further, little-to-no analysis has looked at the effects of the ascriptive characteristics of students beyond parent's income and occupation in determining academic success in a two-year honors program. To answer these concerns, I examine how institutional, family, and individual level factors affect the successful completion of an honors program by students attending a two-year junior college. It is the objective of this research to arrive at a better understanding of two primary questions: first, what are the characteristics and backgrounds of honors students at a two-year college; second, what are the determinants of academic success at a two-year honors program? It is hypothesized that exposure to cultural capital by students, prior to and while attending junior college, is important in facilitating academic success. Quantitative methodology is used to examine the research questions and test the study hypotheses concerning the effects of cultural capital on successful completion from a two-year college honors program. Data were collected from college students enrolled in the honors program at Tyler Junior College, a two-year college located in Tyler, Texas. The findings report that exposure to culture capital does have a positive effect on students' graduating from a two-year college honors program.

Such sorting clearly sets up the potential for exclusion, based on the attainment ideals and on the modes of selection. Ideals of inclusion suggest diversity, and those of equity, by reference to impartiality, suggest freedom from bias. Honors education, which celebrates excellence, and references “honor” and all that word and concept infers, heightens and promotes the principled recognition of attainment, giving rise to questions of diversity, equity and inclusion. The Organization for Economic Co-Operation and Development (OECD), in its Ten Steps to Equity in Education, notes that inclusion is intertwined with fairness. How can honors education—and in the case of the discussions in this book, largely honors in US higher education—promote fairness, be diverse, and support equity? If it does not do so, how can it at all claim to be offering a principled version of what the National Collegiate Honors Council (USA) says are “opportunities for measurably broader, deeper, and more complex learning-centered and learner-directed experiences for its students”? Book excerpt: The academic and social integration of first-generation college students into institutions of higher education continues to be a topic of concern for university administrators, faculty, and staff. Students enter college with different background traits and experiences as well as have different college experiences that can either permit or prohibit their ability to integrate into the college environment (Choy, 2001; Pascarella & Terenzini, 1983). Academic and social integration are two key factors used in predicting whether or not a student will persist from one academic year to the next (Cabrera, Nora, & Castaneda, 1993; Ishitani, 2003). This is especially important for first-generation college students. A student's ability to navigate the college system determines their ability to academically and socially integrate. By understanding how the different background characteristics, pre-college experiences, college experiences, college environments, and academic performances of first-generation college students can influence academic and social integration, universities could increase retention and graduation rates. The development of comprehensive academic support programs by institutions of higher education has been one strategy used to improving the integration of first-generation college students. The purpose of this study was to investigate the longitudinal impact of comprehensive academic support programs on the academic and social integration of first-generation college students during the 2008 academic year at a large public research university. This study employed a quantitative research design using variables from the 2008 CIRP Freshman Survey and the 2009 YFCY Survey. Astin's Input-Environment-Outcome model (1991) was used to examine the impact of the independent measures selected. The analysis plan utilized statistical weighting, factor analysis, descriptive statistics, and multivariate regressions. The results of this study indicated: 1) first-generation FYE students were not academically integrated into college by the end of the first year but participation in a comprehensive academic support program did have a positive impact on their academic integration; and 2) first-generation FYE students were socially integrated into college by the end of the first year and participation in a comprehensive academic support program did have a positive impact on their social integration. These findings have implications for theoretical frameworks, secondary education, and large public research institutions.

Book excerpt: The purpose of the present study was to examine potential differences in background characteristics and academic achievement of honors students who submitted different types of applications. Students who applied to an honors college using traditional applications (high school grade point average and standardized test scores) were compared to students who applied to the honors college using augmentative applications (adding an optional essay component to the traditional application). Nine hundred and eight six students in two consecutive incoming classes were included in this study, which blended causal-comparative research and correlational research. Sternberg's WICS model was the theoretical framework for the study. Independent variables included matriculation year, type of application submitted, and fall-to-fall retention. Dependent variables included fall-to-fall retention, first-year cumulative grade point average, race or ethnicity, gender, reported parental income, standardized test scores, and high school grade point average.
