Book The Influence of a Shallow Water Table on Cratering

Download or read book The Influence of a Shallow Water Table on Cratering written by Benny L. Carnes and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The influence of a shallow water table on crater shapes and sizes in various types of soils was investigated. Tests using high-explosive charges ranging from 1 to 322 pounds were conducted at four separate sites. Site 1 was a specially constructed sand basin with a variable water table level. Site 2 was a natural sandbar of the Mississippi River near Vicksburg. Site 3 was on a natural sand site in central Florida, and Site 4 was a layered clay/sand site at Camp Shelby, Mississippi. Results showed that craters of drastically different shapes can be formed in the presence of a near-surface water table if the water table is in a highly saturated, loose, granular material. Wide, shallow craters were caused by soil liquefaction in loose, saturated, fine medium-loose sands; however, in a relatively dense sand that was not fully saturated, craters were 5 to 10 percent smaller in radius and depth than normal (in homogeneous soil), but still regular and bowl-shaped. In a clay/sand environment, craters tended to be about 10 to 15 percent wider than normal because of sloughing crater slopes of soft clay caused by the shallow water table in the sand. (Author).

Book A Study of Selected Rock Excavations as Related to Large Nuclear Craters

Download or read book A Study of Selected Rock Excavations as Related to Large Nuclear Craters written by and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Analogies between nuclear and conventional excavations are developed from a tabulation of data from 153 mine, quarry, roadway, and dam excavations. The following factors were used as the basis for tabulation of conventional excavation data: purpose, location, precipitation, temperature, ground water level, lithology, mass strength, structural pattern, slope plan, slope profile, depth of excavation, slope height, average inclination, and stability. It was found that average slope inclination tends to be greatest for hard material and for material lacking a well-developed structure, and that inclination tends to de- crease with increasing slope height for excavated slopes reported to be stable. The authors conclude that good analogies are to be found in shape, slope height, depth of excavation, and slope inclination. Loadings of waste material at the rim of some open pit mines may be analogous to ejecta on the lips of nuclear craters. Rubble zones found in some open pit mines may be analogous to the fallback zones of nuclear craters. Differences between preshot and postshot characteristics of cratered media must be appreciated in evaluating analogies between features of conventional excavations and preshot features of nuclear excavation sites. Brief descriptions of 21 selected excavations are presented in Appendix A. The results of this study serve as an aid to judgment of nuclear crater slope stability. Potential subjects for further study are identified.

Book Final Environmental Impact Statement for a Geologic Repository for the Disposal of Spent Nuclear Fuel and High level Radioactive Waste at Yucca Mountain Nye County Nevada

Download or read book Final Environmental Impact Statement for a Geologic Repository for the Disposal of Spent Nuclear Fuel and High level Radioactive Waste at Yucca Mountain Nye County Nevada written by and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 1204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this environmental impact statement (EIS) is to provide information on potential environmental impacts that could result from a Proposed Action to construct, operate and monitor, and eventually close a geologic repository for the disposal of spent nuclear fuel and high-level radioactive waste at the Yucca Mountain site in Nye County, Nevada. The EIS also provides information on potential environmental impacts from an alternative referred to as the No-Action Alternative, under which there would be no development of a geologic repository at Yucca Mountain.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: uring the spring of 1960, an uncle showed me a ‘petrifying spring’ near Plaxtol in Kent Dwhere twigs had been encased in a calcareous jacket. A twig was collected and having - cently been given I. Evan’s Observer’s Book of Geology by my parents, I found a photograph of another petrifying spring and an explanation of its origin. In those days, Derbyshire was too far for a holiday destination, and I took little further interest until a research studentship with Professor G. E. Fogg became available in 1971. Tony Fogg had recently moved to the University College of North Wales, Bangor and the research was to be into cyanobacterium mats, with fieldwork along the Red Sea coast. The fieldwork never materialised but my interest in algal mats had been aroused. A chance stroll along the Bangor shore revealed beautifully calcified cya- bacterium mats, and Tony generously allowed me to investigate these instead. The old Plaxtol collection was retrieved and yielded abundant cyanobacteria. It became apparent that here was a wealth of information about a rock whose formation was so rapid, that the process could be studied in days rather than years – an exceptional state of affairs. A search of the literature also revealed that the rock, a form of travertine, had other unusual features.

Download or read book The Surface of Mars written by Michael H. Carr and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2007-01-11 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our knowledge of Mars has grown enormously over the last decade as a result of the Mars Global Surveyor, Mars Odyssey, Mars Express, and the two Mars Rover missions. This book is a systematic summary of what we have learnt about the geological evolution of Mars as a result of these missions. It describes the diverse Martian surface features and summarizes current ideas as to how, when, and under what conditions they formed, and explores how Earth and Mars differ and why the two planets evolved so differently. The author also discusses possible implications of the geologic history for the origin and survival of indigenous Martian life. Up-to-date and highly illustrated, this book will be a principal reference for researchers and graduate students in planetary science. The comprehensive list of references will also assist readers in pursuing further information on the subject. Colour images can be found at www.cambridge.org/9780521872010.
