Book Industrial Development for the 21st Century

Download or read book Industrial Development for the 21st Century written by David O'Connor and published by Zed Books. This book was released on 2008-06-01 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With very few exceptions, industrial development has been central to the process of structural transformation which characterises economic development. Industrial Development for the 21st century examines the new challenges and opportunities arising from globalization, technological change and new international trade rules. The first part focuses on key sectors with potential for developing countries, focussing on two key themes. First, traditional points of entry for late industrializers - like textiles and clothing - have become even more intensely competitive than ever before, requiring more innovative adaptive strategies for success. Second, countries now recognize that manufacturing does not exhaust the opportunities for producing high value-added goods and services for international markets. Knowledge intensity is increasing across all spheres of economic activity, including agriculture and services, which can offer promising development paths for some developing countries. The final section addresses social and environmental aspects of industrial development. Labour-intensive, but not necessarily other patterns of industrial development can be highly effective in poverty reduction though further industrial progress may be less labour-intensive. A range of policies can promote industrial energy and materials efficiency, often with positive impacts on firms' financial performance as well as the environment. Promoting materials recycling and reuse is an effective, if indirect means of conserving resources. Finally, the growth of multinational interest in corporate social responsibility is traced, with consideration given to both the barriers and opportunities this can pose for developing country enterprises linked to global supply chains.

Book Industrial Craft in Australia

Download or read book Industrial Craft in Australia written by Jesse Adams Stein and published by Palgrave Macmillan. This book was released on 2022-01-05 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first of its kind to investigate the ongoing significance of industrial craft in deindustrialising places such as Australia. Providing an alternative to the nostalgic trope of the redundant factory ‘craftsman’, this book introduces the intriguing and little-known trade of engineering patternmaking, where objects are brought to life through the handmade ‘originals’ required for mass production. Drawing on oral histories collected by the author, this book highlights the experiences of industrial craftspeople in Australian manufacturing, as they navigate precarious employment, retraining, gendered career pathways, creative expression and technological change. The book argues that digital fabrication technologies may modify or transform industrial craft, but should not obliterate it. Industrial craft is about more than the rudimentary production of everyday objects: it is about human creativity, material knowledge and meaningful work, and it will be key to human survival in the troubled times ahead.

Book A Larger Australia The ABC 2015 Boyer Lectures

Download or read book A Larger Australia The ABC 2015 Boyer Lectures written by Michael Fullilove and published by Penguin Group Australia. This book was released on 2015-12-01 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the ABC 2015 Boyer Lectures, one of Australia's most influential foreign policy experts examines our country's place in the world. For most of Australia's history, the world was run by nations like our own. But now the international order that has prevailed since the end of the Second World War is fraying. Global institutions are showing their age. Our great and powerful friends are becoming less great and powerful. Rising powers such as China are challenging the old order. Wealth and power are shifting eastwards, towards us. The tyranny of distance is being replaced by the predicament of proximity. Award-winning historian and author Michael Fullilove argues that we must shape our international environment. This requires us to be smarter and shrewder – but also larger. Australia needs to be a big, confident, ambitious country, open to the world, with an effective political system, the instruments to influence the balance of power and the confidence to have our own head of state. Stirring, timely and important, A Larger Australia tells us it is time for Australians to think big. The ABC Boyer Lectures is an annual series of lectures delivered by prominent Australians who are invited by the ABC Board to express their thoughts on major social, cultural, scientific or political issues. The ABC Boyer Lectures are named after the late Sir Richard Boyer, a former chairman of the ABC.

Download or read book Dark Emu written by Bruce Pascoe and published by . This book was released on 2015-10-01 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dark Emu puts forward an argument for a reconsideration of the hunter-gatherer tag for pre-colonial Aboriginal Australians. The evidence insists that Aboriginal people right across the continent were using domesticated plants, sowing, harvesting, irrigating and storing - behaviors inconsistent with the hunter-gatherer tag. Gerritsen and Gammage in their latest books support this premise but Pascoe takes this further and challenges the hunter-gatherer tag as a convenient lie. Almost all the evidence comes from the records and diaries of the Australian explorers, impeccable sources.
