Book The Indo American Magazine Vol 1

Download or read book The Indo American Magazine Vol 1 written by UNKNOWN. AUTHOR and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Indo-American Magazine, Vol. 1: Spring 1909 Books that change the courses of human lives by stirring human consciousness through a new presentation of old truths are not many, and when they appear they are not loudly greeted. Slowly they make their way to recognition through the familiar stages of neglect, ridicule and attack. They may in time become much talked of, but they are seldom widely read, and they are never popular. Their value does not rest upon a general circulation, but in the instruction they convey to isolated individuals through whose minds and lives their teaching filters into other lives here and there, reaching by and by, scattered groups, and, gradually, by ever widening circles, touching the masses of mankind. What is new is not the truth, but the discovery which penetrates its covering, the revelation which unfolds it. Sometimes the revelation is not new; it may have been a thousand times unfolded and a thousand times forgotten, yet always there has lingered somewhere in the chain of history the key to the forgotten treasure. Live on, O life of mine! Though often thou dost yearn to be at rest, He who hath lent thee life hath thought it best Thine to prolong till more through thee are blest; Live on, and cease repine. Work on, O hands of mine! Ennobling thought that even thou canst share A part with God in making earth more fair; Then labor calmly on, and to complain forbear, Fulfilling his design. Trust on, O heart of mine! Though dark the way and rough the angry sea, Thy pilot holds the helm, thy father beckons thee; One guides the course of every songster free, To him thine all resign. Sing on, O soul of mine! Sing songs of faith, and hope, and joy, and cheer; Outsound the discord grating on thine ear, And bring celestial music, sweet and clear, To lonelier hearts than thine. Download or read book To Be Indian written by Joy Porter and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2023-08-04 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born on the Seneca Indian Reservation in New York State, Arthur Caswell Parker (1881-1955) was a prominent intellectual leader both within and outside tribal circles. Of mixed Iroquois, Seneca, and Anglican descent, Parker was also a controversial figure-recognized as an advocate for Native Americans but criticized for his assimilationist stance. In this exhaustively researched biography-the first book-length examination of Parker’s life and career-Joy Porter explores complex issues of Indian identity that are as relevant today as in Parker’s time. From childhood on, Parker learned from his well-connected family how to straddle both Indian and white worlds. His great-uncle, Ely S. Parker, was Commissioner of Indian Affairs under Ulysses S. Grant--the first Native American to hold the position. Influenced by family role models and a strong formal education, Parker, who became director of the Rochester Museum, was best known for his work as a "museologist" (a word he coined). Porter shows that although Parker achieved success within the dominant Euro-American culture, he was never entirely at ease with his role as assimilated Indian and voiced frustration at having "to play Indian to be Indian." In expressing this frustration, Parker articulated a challenging predicament for twentieth-century Indians: the need to negotiate imposed stereotypes, to find ways to transcend those stereotypes, and to assert an identity rooted in the present rather than in the past.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life and Action, Vol. 6: The Great Work in America, the Indo-American Magazine The organ was introduced in France in the year 757 A. D., resulting in a knowledge of harmony; but the Oratorio did not come in till 1540, and in 1597 the first introduction of the modern opera made its appearance; with the Lyric Drama in 1645, and then came Gluck, Haydn, Mozart, Cherubini, and so on, down to the pres ent day. Prof. Myers has shown in his late work, History as Past Ethics, how little morals and conscience have had to do in the earlier development and character of rude or barbarous peoples.
