Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Indian Runner Duck Book I think it was about 1904 or 1905 that the first important literature concerning the Indian Runner Ducks was published in this country. At about this time, good articles, dealing with the wonderful qualities of this new breed were published in at least three of our poultry periodicals. Soon, breeders, here and there, began to try them in a somewhat gingerly way, as though rather expecting a gold brick. The great service which this early literature did the breed was to call public attention strongly to it, through what then seemed the exorbitant claims made for these birds as layers. After a few years Mr. Irving Cook took up this breed, advertising continuously and rather strikingly. As he began the work when young and enthusiastic, and, later, gave his entire strength to his Indian Runner business the Runners soon found themselves in the midst of a "boom." But even before him several men who still breed the Runners were at work with this breed. As soon as the breed began to attract keen attention, some breeders who wished to improve it in every possible way began to make inquiries as to its origin. One early breeder who made every effort to get the true history about this time reports that even then "it seemed to be a matter of surmise. All the writers' ideas on the subject seemed to be vague, and many conflicting statements were made." Some of the causes for this haziness and conflict of statement I have been able to run down. In consequence, where ducks were kept on the farms, they were generally of mongrel origin, were not fed especially for eggs, and were selected by their breeders for table qualities chiefly. Then came the Indian Runner Duck Club, which framed a standard of excellence for show points, and later the International Indian Runner Duck Club was formed, also with similar objects in View. Utility, the main object for which the Runner Duck was created, has all along, in my Opinion, been relegated to the rear. In reviewing the his tory of the breed, it seems incredible that given a country with a moist climate such as we have, and a breed of egg-producing merits, little or no concerted action has been taken by breeders to foster the Runner Duck's high fecund inherit ance. This book was released on 2017-11-02 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Natural and Artificial Indian Runner Duck Culture It is only during the last few years that the value of the Indian Runner Duck has awakened the poultry inter ests to their real value as a layer of large, green and white eggs of much' value. Their meat is one of the best for stewing, bro'iling, and roasting. Of late our physicians recognized them to be the most palatable meats, wholesome and nutritious, of all our flesh diets. Duck culture now assumes a most important part in the poultry business. The reason is very plain; people are just realizing that ducks can be raised better than chickens, with less 1055, half the labor, will mature in eight or ten weeks ready for market, and ready for lay ing from four and one-half or six months, depending on the feeding and care the attendant gives them. Again we say there is no strain of poultry or ducks that will yield as many eggs as the Indian Runner Duck will if proper care is taken. They take less care and less feed than any other strain. Our markets are just learning the difference between the Indian Runner Ducks and all other strains. The Runner produces just enough fat to broil nicely and sweetly where other kinds are overfat, have a greasy taste, and the unfortunate housewife turns about three to four pounds into the waste bucket when the price, conside'red low, is twenty cents a pound, but when put in the waste bucket it means from sixty to eighty cents. Book excerpt: Dear Brother Root.-I hope you will not take It amiss if I say that I feel that you have treated me about as you did the duck to which you gave "a bad name while she was quietly attending to business." My chief "business" In writing "The Indian Runner Duck Book" was to clear up the much muddled history of the Indian Runner, and to preserve the white-egg duck for the farmers. The American Standard. In affirming that the true duck is worthless, bade lair to push that duck entirely out of the country. All breeders know that changing the type of any bird Is likely to destroy its most valued points, and this is peculiarly true of the Indian Runner. The original heavy-laying Runner laid a white egg. Our markets often discriminate in favor of the white egg. even against the light brown one. Much more would this be the case against a green one: and as to taking too much space on this point, It was the one point where farmers needed warning. It was. In fact, the foundation of the whole matter; and I have had many letters from farmers telling me how long they had looked for just such a book, and how exactly It lust met their needs. If you will pardon me for so saying, it seems to me that you, who know so little about ducks-on your own showing-and who, on your own showing, believe the facts only when you have proven them (as to the good laying, for Instance), have hardly reached the point where you can logically set up your opinion or your experience against that of the men who raise perhaps 20.000 or 30,000 a season. These are the men who say ducklings should not get wet while downy. If you will look In the right place you will find that my book also says that they should have water so that they cannot get wet in it. Young ducklings chill very easily, and wet down adds greatly to the danger of such fatalities. Another point where it seems to me you fall to "play fair" is this: In the very number of your journal where my advertisement appears (a journal which has a good reputation), you charge me, who have also. I believe, a good reputation, with writing a book less valuable than It should be. You do this because you Ignore the point of view from which It was written-that of the farmer who must sell market eggs: and you do It In the very number wherein my advertisement of the book appears. We published this book ourselves, not offering It to any outside publisher at all. It cost quite a bit of money. We are paying you for advertising. We cannot tell all we know In a fifty-cent book. We hope to get out a larger edition late in the year, which will tell all the things you want to know. Finally. I feel that if you would be just, you will publish this letter in the same department wherein your comment appeared. C. S. Valentine. -Gleanings in Bee Culture, Vol. 39, Issue 5

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Indian Ducks and Their Allies IN 1896 and the following years I wrote a series of articles. On Indian Ducks and their Allies in the Journal of the Bombay Natural History Society. In 1908 these articles. Were brought up to date, corrected and added to and appeared in book form, and so well was this volume received by the public, especially by sportsmen in India, that the edition was soon exhausted. The first edition appeared principally to meet a want which had long been felt by small-game shooters in India. That is to say a volume, reference to which would not only show how each duck could be identified, but would also give some idea of its habits and its scarcity or the reverse. Hume and Marshall's Game Birds of India, which was published in 1879 80, grand book as it was and is, was felt to be behind. The times, and much had since been recorded in various magazines and journals. But these records were scattered here, there and everywhere, and could not be consulted Without the greatest difficulty, and it was, indeed, quite impossible for anyone who had not access to a very complete library to say what had, and what had not, been recorded. The first edition may be said not only to have served its purpose for the. Time being, but it served yet another and perhaps even more important one, for since its appearance a. Very large amount of information has been published to add to and correct its contents. This second edition incorporates these additions and corrections, and adds a considerable amount of matter not obtainable by me when writing in India. Several species have been added to the Indian list, and the geographical distribution of certain others has been more correctly given.
