Book The Struggle for India s Independence in Bihar 1912 22

Download or read book The Struggle for India s Independence in Bihar 1912 22 written by Shaukat A. Khan and published by Blue Rose Publishers. This book was released on 2023-12-27 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work looks back at the role Bihar played in the struggle for India's independence in the first decade after its separation from Bengal as a province in 1912, particularly through the archival material contained in the contemporary confidential government files preserved in the Bihar State Archives, Patna. It uncovers some significant facts and dimensions like rumor-mongering adopted as a mode of struggle by the revolutionaries against British rule during World War I and the establishment of parallel administration at different levels during the Non-Cooperation Movement by its local leaders in Bihar. While it scrutinizes the sorrowful tales of sufferings of the Indian people under British colonial rule, it also raises questions about how the hate politics and hate crimes under BJP's rule, particularly against Minorities and Dalits can be justified as less brutal than the brutalities committed under the tyrannical British rule? Or how the targetted use of draconian laws or law enforcing agencies against those who question its unconstitutional and repressive policies and communal or rather hate politics can be justified as just in independent India under democratic government, and the use of similar laws or law enforcing agencies as repressive and unjust under despotic British rule?

Book How Best Do We Survive

Download or read book How Best Do We Survive written by Kenneth McPherson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book traces the social and political history of the Muslims of south India from the later nineteenth century to Independence in 1947, and the contours that followed. It describes a community in search of political survival amidst an ever-changing climate, and the fluctuating fortunes it had in dealing with the rise of Indian nationalism, the local political nuances of that rise, and its own changing position as part of the wider Muslim community in India. The book argues that Partition and the foundation of Pakistan in 1947 were neither the goal nor the necessarily inescapable result of the growth of communal politics and sentiment, and analyses the post-1947 constructions of events leading to Partition. Neither the fact of Muslim communalism per se before 1947 nor the existence of separate Muslim electorates provide an explanation for Pakistan. The book advances the theory that micro-level studies of the operation of the former, and the defence of the latter, in British India can lead to a better understanding of the origins of communalism. The book makes an important contribution to understanding and dealing with the complexities of communalism — be it Hindu, Muslim or Christian — and its often tragic consequences.

Book Ruling Through Education

Download or read book Ruling Through Education written by Tim Allender and published by Sterling Publishers Pvt. Ltd. This book was released on 2006 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tracing the history of colonial education in the Punjab, the large province of Hindustan divided today between India and Pakistan, this book argues that the British-controlled system of colonial education in Hindustan failed well before the national movement challenged foreign educational practice in the early twentieth century. Drawing on extensive archival research in Great Britain, India and Pakistan, Allender shows how the early ideas of British officials generated a highly imaginative village system of schooling. Attempting to accommodate local language and religious sensitivities, this broad-based scheme offered possibilities to improve the lot of village boys. The revolt of 1857, and a well-meaning crusade against female infanticide, prompted officials to drop this scheme and to content themselves with city based schools. Christian missionary tensions with the government over their evangelising agenda also meant that their focus on poor students was limited to a mere 17 years. These developments helped to create a strong indigenous voice for educational innovations and change, notably represented in the Arya Samaj. In 1882, the Hunter Commission marked a recognition over the previous 30 years made it impossible for them to reach the general population with an effective European-led scheme of education.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Delhi came under the British rule in 1803 following the defeat of the Marathas at the hands of the British forces, led by General Lake in the Battle at Patparganj near Chalera Village in the current city of Noida. General Lake established a residency at Delhi with Sir David Ochterlony as its first resident and Chief Commissioner. Following the British conquest, there was an impression that the population of the city was steadily increasing. In 1806, Lord Lake and others were convinced that there was a definite increase in the population and attributed it to the novelty of a regime of comfort, security and impartial justice. Census reports from 1833 to 1853 showed a rise in population from 131,000 to 151,000. Most of the population was concentrated around the Chandni Chowk and Faiz Bazaar region of Daryaganj. The reason for this substantial increase in population was said to be the annual increase in the influx of people from outside, mostly from Punjab.
