Book excerpt: In the 19th century, Bengal would witness a revolution like it never had. It began with a band of Englishmen, led by the brilliant William Jones. Then there was the enigmatic Rammohun Roy who invented a reformed Hinduism called the Brahmo Samaj; and his friend, David Hare, who conceived the idea of the Hindu College. There was the tempestuous Michael Madhusudan who created new forms of Bengali verse; and Michael's well-wisher, the scholar Vidyasagar, who fought fiercely for the cause of Hindu widows. There was Bankim Chandra, a civil servant who helped create the Indian novel. There were Jagadish Bose and Prafulla Chandra Ray, two lonely workers in laughably primitive laboratories who became the frontiersmen of Indian science; and Vivekananda, the monk who preached a new form of Vedantism, home and abroad. There was, finally, Rabindranath Tagore, the very epitome of the Bengal Renaissance. How did such an astonishing flowering come to take place? And how did it change India? Immaculately researched, told with colour, drama and passion, Awakening is a stunning achievement.

Bengali prose emerged, and with it the novel and modern blank verse; old arguments about religion, society, and the lives of women were overturned; great schools and colleges were created; new ideas surfaced in science. And all these changes were led by a handful of remarkable men and women. Book West Bengal and the Federalizing Process in India

Download or read book West Bengal and the Federalizing Process in India written by Marcus F. Franda and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2015-12-08 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its independence in 1947, India, as a large, diverse, and rapidly changing country, has had to meet federalizing problems of a magnitude unprecedented in history. The result has been a process that combines, modifies, and transforms many established ideas about federalism. Professor Franda deals with the complexities of India's experience by analyzing the politics of center-state relations as they affect one Indian state. He explores the various ways in which central and state leadership groups in India and West Bengal have developed working relationships, and examines the effect of state and regional political, economic, and social conditions on the evolution of center-state behavior patterns. Originally published in 1968. Book The Journey of a Bengali Woman to Japan

Download or read book The Journey of a Bengali Woman to Japan written by Hariprabha Takeda and published by Jadavpur University Press. This book was released on 2019-01-31 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Four years before Rabindranath Tagore went to Japan, a young woman sailed from Bengal over the feared kalapani seas to meet her Japanese husband’s family. Hariprabha Mallick had married Oemon Takeda in the liberal melieu of the Brahmo Samaj in the early 1900s. Her sojourn among her Japanese in-laws gave her another family in a different language, one who could communicate with her only in the language of the heart. She wrote about her experience of this interpersonal and cultural encounter, and travelled to Japan at least two more times. During the Second World War, she served as the Bengali voice of Radio Tokyo at the request of Rashbehari Bose. Translated in this volume from the original Bengali, Hariprabha Takeda’s writing provides an account of Japan a century ago, seen through the eyes of a naive, yet perceptive and altogether extraordinary young woman. Three essays by Hariprabha Takeda have been translated for this volume, along with a wealth of other archival material about her life and times.
