Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Impressions of an Englishman in America In offering to the public this book on my impressions of America I do not in any way attempt to criticise the Government, the laws, the institutions, or the policies of the United States. Many writers who visit America and afterwards write a book, see only one side of the country. Furnished with letters of introduction to the best known people, they are received with the splendid hospitality which rich Americans are so well noted for, but they have not had the opportunity of judging America as those who have to fight their way by the sweat of their brain, or their brow. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Impressions in America It has been my habit to inscribe my books to some friend or friends; but in this instance I am bewildered by the number of American friends, to each. Of whom, with almost equal propriety, I might offer such small tribute of gratitude as the dedication of a book can imply. I should be very unwilling to be thought mindful of the kindness of only him, or her, or them, whose names appeared in such an inscription. So that I feel it better to dedicate this record of innumerable acts of kindness and hospitality to each and all of those by whom they were shown. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Americans, an Impression HE earlier chapters Of this book were written in America, the later ones in England and all were revised by me in Russia, where I was able to regard the two English speaking nations with greater detachment than was, perhaps, possible either in the country which is my own or in the country which is my theme, and to compare Democracy, as it is exemplified in England and America, with Autocracy, which finds its most notable modern instance in the Empire Of the Tsar. Book Our American Cousins

Download or read book Our American Cousins written by William Edwin Adams and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-26 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our American Cousins: Being Personal Impressions of the People and Institutions of the United States There is no country in the world, except his own, through which an Englishman will find it pleasanter to travel than America. He is so kindly received, so hospitably entertained, I may say so affectionately treated, that be naturally feels as much at home as if he were in England. Our cousins across the broad Atlantic, indeed, scarcely regard an Englishman as a stranger at all. They certainly do not behave towards him as if he were one. England is called the old country, the mother country, but never a foreign country. And the respect paid to the old land is extended to the travellers who come from it. Every courtesy and attention are given to him. He is told to make himself, and is made to feel himself, perfectly at home. If the visitor does not have a good time of it, or, to put it more emphatically, a high old time of it, it must be mainly his own fault. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New America Impressions sometimes equal facts and figures as evidence. Now and again they are even more im portant. New feelings have been sweeping America in the past two years, and they are feelings which must leave their effect on people all over the world for a long time to come. No one can doubt that one way or another they will be of towering importance to Britain and the British people. As an English man resident in America during this period I have touched various sides of life and have formed feel ings about the American people in what is probably an historic phase of their development as a nation. The sketches that follow will reveal to Americans the angle of an ordinary Englishman, and to my own people will give perhaps a measure of information. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Over Here: Impressions of America During a year spent largely in Pennsylvania, with occasional visits to other states, I have found little to criticise, but rather much to admire, much indeed to love. America now means a great deal to me, since it contains so many people that I have learnt to care for, so I want to let my cousins as well as my own countrymen know my thoughts. From the day that I landed in New York until the present moment, I have been treated with a kindliness that surpasses anything I thought possible in this world. I have been able to see, I hope, where misunderstanding has arisen, and, being a Highland Scotchman, I am able to express my feelings. I have written more about persons than about places. Sometimes I laugh a little, but never unkindly; and I do this because I realize that American people rather appreciate a joke even at their own expense. Often I have heard, over here, that it is impossible for an Englishman to see a good joke. A man told me once that the Kaiser was disguising his submarines as jests, with an obvious design. The idea was interesting to me, because if there is one thing that we Britons pride ourselves upon, it is our sense of humour. Of course, the explanation is obvious. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Impressions Mr. Braddon has honoured me with an invitation to write a foreword to his American Impressions. So far as I am aware, I have two qualifications, and two only, for the slight task imposed upon me. One is that I have visited the United States several times. The other is that I am imbued with the earnest hope that, with the lapse of time, relations between the two great English-speaking nationalities will become more and more friendly, and that their interests will come to be regarded as more and more common interests. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Impressions of America Turn back now to (i), i.e. The experiment with the forefinger alone, and keeping the attention fixed on the finger, look first at some object not very far behind the finger (i.e. On the side of it away from the eye), and then at some object much further off: you will notice that the further off is the object at which you look, the greater is the distance between the two images of the finger, so that by looking at an object a suitable distance away, the two images of the forefinger may be made to move as far apart as we wish, within certain limits. It is in this way that we can bring the two stereoscopic pictures into coincidence, and although it is impossible to avoid a somewhat tedious description of this method, in practice it is quite easy, especially after a person has once succeeded. Book excerpt: Excerpt from California: An Englishman's Impressions of the Golden State Students of sociological problems will find that I have but skirted the fringe of what is, perhaps, the most poignant topic of the hour throughout America to-day that slow kindling in the camps of labour of the fires of rebellion and anarchy that increasing bitterness against the rich, which would seem to threaten not only California, but the whole Republic with the fiercest civil war yet known to history. Instead of dwelling upon these stu pendons subjects instead of climbing the highest points of her lofty mountains, I have traversed California guided rather by a vagrant taste for idling and roadside observation, than by, any desire to tilt against the windmills of great national problems. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Impressions of America, Vol. 1 of 2: During the Years 1833, 1834, and 1835 I seek to describe its people as I saw them, clear-headed, energetic, frank, and hospitable; a community suited to, and labouring for, their country's advancement, rather than for their own present comfort. This is and will be their lot for probably another generation. To those, then, who seek scandalous innuendos against, or imaginary conversations with, the fair, the brave, and the wise amongst the daughters and sons of America, I say, Read not at all; since herein, though something of mankind, there is little of any man, woman, or child, of the thousands with whom I have reciprocated hospitality and held kind communion.
