This book was released on 2018-06-08 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. It details the linkages between ecosystem services and biodiversity in agriculture, specifically in relation to soil health, ecological management of pests, weeds and invasive alien species, agroforestry, organic farming systems and ecotourism. It analyses current policies and best practices across the subregion and highlights key policy entry points for mainstreaming approaches to agriculture that reduce the use of agrochemicals. Produced under the EU-funded project “Capacity Building Related to Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEAs) in Africa, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) countries – Phase 2”, the document will guide countries in revising their strategies or policies related to chemical and biodiversity management. In particular, it will assist countries in revising or implementing their National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs) to help them meet a number of Aichi Biodiversity Targets relevant to the agriculture sector.

Download or read book Science of Pacific Island Peoples Education language patterns policy written by R. J. Morrison and published by [email protected]. This book was released on 1994 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Science of the Pacific Island Peoples is a series of four volumes which contains a unique collection of traditional scientific and technical knowledge from the Pacific Islands. Traditional knowledge, based on accumulated experience or continuous usage, is usually passed from one generation to the next by work of mouth and demonstration. Having had little attention from the media, education ministries, or development agencies, traditional knowledge is in danger of being forgotten. These books attempt to record some aspects of traditional knowledge before they are lost. This, the fourth volume, on Education, Language, Patterns, and Policy contains chapters on allegory, Australia, tourism, the 21st century, Fijian cosmology, Tongan symmetries, Papua New Guinea, the Cook Islands, communication and information, the Crown Research Institutes of Aotearoa/New Zealand, Polynesian thought, Maori knowledge, developmental activities in Western Samoa, Fijian mats, Micronesian development, and Vanuatu games. The other volumes in the series are Ocean and Coastal Studies (volume 1); Land Use and Agriculture (volume 2); and Fauna, Flora, Food & Medicine (volume 3)."--Back cover.

Book A Clash of Paradigms

Download or read book A Clash of Paradigms written by Suan Maiava and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-07-24 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2001. This study indicates that researchers have far to go in understanding and assessing how development projects work. The author shows that, often, the perception of failure is not shared by those whom were intended to benefit. She uses a case study of Samoan villagers introduced to cattle farming to examine the wider development process and challenge the conventional theories. By drawing on people-centred perspectives that give much greater weight to the role of culture in development, the volume does not simply criticize development project management, but suggests practical and positive ways forward, encouraging spontaneous indigenous development which should be supported by projects where appropriate.

Book Transforming food systems in the Pacific

Download or read book Transforming food systems in the Pacific written by CTA and published by CTA. This book was released on 2017-08-24 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many islands import most of their food, much of which is calorie-dense and of low nutritional value. It may be cheaper than local produce, but a diet based on imported food is leading to a whole range of health problems. All too often, nutritious indigenous foods are ignored by local populations, as they are seen as ‘poor people’s food’. Tourism has been rapidly expanding in both regions, yet there is a disconnect between the tourist market and local producers. Indeed, 70% of the food used in the tourist industry in the Pacific is imported. As this booklet shows, creating closer links between tourism and agriculture – agritourism – can help to reduce the food import bill and at the same time boost local food production, and therefore the incomes of island farmers. With support from the intra-ACP Agricultural Policy Programme funded by the European Union, CTA has been actively promoting links between the two regions and encouraging them to share their knowledge and experience. On the one hand, CTA has provided policy support which has brought together government ministries with the private sector to promote agritourism. CTA also played a key role in establishing the Chefs for Development Initiative, which is creating closer links between the hospitality industry and local farmers. Over time, these endeavours will help to generate income and employment across the value chain.
