Book The Impact of West African Dance on Positive Mental Health

Download or read book The Impact of West African Dance on Positive Mental Health written by Aaron C. Mason and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: The purpose of this study was to explore relationships that might exist between the frequency of participation in West African drum and dance class and correlates of mental health including stress, anxiety, depression, and affect. The present study also sought to explore the relationship between frequency of participation in this activity and attitudes towards seeking psychotherapy. Using a sample size of 83 dancers and drummers, the study compared the number of classes participants had taken in the last 6 months to scores on several measures of mental health as well as the Attitudes Towards Seeking Professional Psychological Help (ATSPPH) scale. While no significant differences were found among the original hypotheses, exploratory analyses with an independent samples t test revealed that African American participants had significantly less positive attitudes toward seeking therapy than Caucasian participants, adding to the body of literature on Black attitudes towards receiving psychological services. Anecdotal comments from participants provided implications for future exploration into the relationship between West African drum and dance and the constructs of belongingness, mindfulness, and ethnic pride.

Book Dance in West Africa

Book excerpt: The study centres on the subject of Dance in West Africa, namely a dance of the Ewe in Southern Ghana. Although modernity is having an adverse effect on traditional dancing, it is still important in the society and may be viewed as a mirror of culture. The objectives are to describe the dance and embed this form of expression within a theoretical framework. Every movement has a meaning and in this way it is possible to explain a whole story, a person is speaking through dance. Ulrike Groß studied Phonetic Sciences, Linguistics and Slavonic Languages at the University of Cologne; Dance at Laban Centre London and in Westafrican Countries. Book excerpt: Changes in cardiovascular health, balance, agility, and motivation were assessed during a 6-week West African dance and live drumming intervention with collegiate dancers. The study measured cardiovascular health with the Accelerated 3-Minute Step test, balance with the m/r Star Excursion Balance test, and agility with the Illinois Agility test. Motivation was measured using the Classroom Life Measure, Motivated Strategies Learning Questionnaire, and the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale. The intervention met for 55 minutes twice a week for six weeks; six (6) participants, 5 females and 1 male, median age of 20 +/- 2 years of age, with 12.61 average years of dancing, completed the study. Statistical analysis using one-way ANOVA revealed no significant changes, but there were individual trends that suggest that improvements in cardiovascular health, balance and agility can occur after 6 weeks of West African dance training. Responses to questionnaires revealed that participants enjoyed what they were learning in class, and felt supported by the instructor and other students in the intervention. More research on a larger scale needs to be done to assess West African dance's impact on physical fitness.

This book was released on 2005-01-15 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presenting dance/movement therapy (DMT) as a viable and valuable psychosocial support service for those with a medical illness, Sharon W. Goodill shows how working creatively with the mind/body connection can encourage and enhance the healing process. This book represents the first attempt to compile, synthesize, and publish the work that has been done over recent years in medical DMT. The emerging application of medical DMT is grounded within the context of established viewpoints and theories, such as arts therapies, health psychology and scientific perspectives. As well as examining its theoretical foundations, the author offers real-life examples of medical DMT working with people of different ages with different medical conditions. This comprehensive book provides a firm foundation for exploration and practice in medical DMT, including recommendations for professional preparation, research and program development. Interviews with dance/movement therapists bring fresh and exciting perspectives to the field and these and the author's testimonies point to the possible future applications of medical DMT. With an increasing number of professional dance/movement therapists working with the medically ill and their families, this is a timely and well-grounded look at an exciting new discipline. It is recommended reading for DMT students and professionals, complementary therapists, and all those with an interest in the healing potential of working innovatively with the mind and body.

Book Psychosocial Interventions for Health and Well Being

Download or read book Psychosocial Interventions for Health and Well Being written by Girishwar Misra and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-07-27 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides multifaceted and multidisciplinary insights into the growing field of health studies. Providing inputs from the behavioural sciences as well as social sciences, it discusses the issues of recovery from illness, and growth and wellbeing, as situated in social and eco-cultural contexts, and addresses the modalities of health-related interventions in diverse contexts. The specific themes taken up by the contributors are post-trauma growth, resilience, gender and health, distress and wellness, indigenous healing, counselling and psychotherapy, disability-related interventions, self-healing, as well as health issues of special groups like adolescents and the elderly, cancer patients and those suffering from other chronic illnesses. Till recently, the medical model has prevailed as the chief form of understanding health and illness. This has led to marginalization of the context, localization of all health and wellness components within the individual, and to biological reductionism. The contributions to this volume propose corrective measures and provide diverse approaches in a balanced manner. This volume is useful for researchers and practitioners interested in health studies, including the behavioural sciences, social work, medical anthropology, and public health.

Book excerpt: 'Community' is a multivalent concept, subject to a plurality of contexts and constructs that can alter and shift its meaning. As a dance artist, I have encountered myriad understandings and manifestations of 'community' through dance practice, and perceive an intrinsic relationship between dance and 'community.' A 'West African' dance class in Philadelphia - designated as a 'community-based' class by the instructor - provides a rich opportunity to excavate this relationship. The class, one of several offered throughout the city, is located in West Philadelphia. It is an intergenerational class attended by a diverse demographic of participants (race/ethnicity, gender, profession, class, age, ability, etc.) with an array of motivations and goals for participating in class (as made evident through conversations and interviews). All are welcome to attend, regardless of previous experience or skill level in 'West African' dance. My dissertation is a qualitative research study that examines participant experiences and interpretations of 'community,' with attention paid to the socio-cultural/political context of 'West African' dance in the United States, specifically in Philadelphia. Methodologically, this study is situated in sensory ethnography, philosophically oriented in community based participatory research, and draws from phenomenological strategies towards gathering lived experience data. Lived experiences of 'community' are placed in conversation with literature concerned with theories and constructions of 'community' from a range of disciplines, as well as texts that interrogate the historical, sociocultural and political contexts which frame 'West African' dance within the United States. As a member of this particular 'West African' dance class, I situate my own experiences within that of the collective, migrating inward and outward between personal reflection and participant narratives. As such this investigation lies at the intersection of subjective, intersubjective, and cultural knowledge.

Book Physical Activity and Exercise among Children Health Implications

Download or read book Physical Activity and Exercise among Children Health Implications written by Åsa B. Tornberg and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2023-11-28 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to the World Health Organization’s new recommendations on physical activity for children, regardless of living with disability or not, physical activity should be at least 60 minutes per day. Around the world, children are less and less physically active, leading to increased health risks. A healthy lifestyle, as being physically active, is normally set during childhood and adolescence, making children an important group to study and target. This Research Topic will address physiological health effects related to physical activity and exercise among children, regardless of living with disability or not, and how to assess these effects in a valid and reliable way. Children do not respond to physical activity and exercise in the same way as adults do due to unmatured physiology. Living with a disability may also affect the child’s response to physical activity and exercise. In order to be able to follow and prescribe physical activity and exercise to children, rigorous knowledge is needed on how children respond to different physical activity and exercise regimes. Additionally, to be able to follow and prescribe physical activity and exercise to children, valid and reliable assessment methods are needed. Not only do the tests need to be valid and reliable, but also common standards on how to interpret them are required. This Frontiers Research Topic seeks a broad range of original research articles, systematic review articles and meta-analyses in the area of “physical activity and exercise among children” including: -Physical activity assessments which are age- and ability-adjusted, -Fitness assessments which are age- and ability-adjusted, -Effects on health-related outcomes in relation to different physical activity interventions which are age- and ability-adapted, -Effects on health-related outcomes in relation to different exercise interventions which are age- and ability-adapted.

Book Ethical Agility in Dance

Download or read book Ethical Agility in Dance written by Noyale Colin and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-11-13 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited collection examines the potential of dance training for developing socially engaged individuals capable of forging ethical human relations for an ever-changing world and in turn frames dance as a fundamental part of human experience. This volume draws together a range of critical voices to reflect the inclusive potential of dance. The contributions offer perspectives on contemporary dance training in Britain from dance educators, scholars, practitioners and artists. Through examining the politics, values and ethics of learning dance today, this book argues for the need of a re-assessment of the evolving practices in dance training and techniques. Key questions address how the concept of ‘technique’ and associated systems of training in dance could be redefined to enable the collaboration of skills and application of ideas necessary to twenty-first-century dance. The editors present these ideas in different modes of writing. This collection of essays, conversations and manifestos offers a way to explore, debate and grasp the shifting values of contemporary dance. Examining these values in the applied field of dance reveals a complex and contrasting range of ideas, encompassing broad themes including the relationships between individuality and collectivity, rigour and creativity, and virtuosity and inclusivity. This volume points to ethical techniques as providing a way of navigating these contrasting values in dance. It serves as an invaluable resource for academics as well as practitioners and students.

Book Bantaba

  • Pages : 136 pages

Download or read book Bantaba written by Tashiara Scott and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: MOTIVATION In Richmond, there are 1.21 times as many African Americans as any other ethnic group. Yet 63.4% of African Americans live in poverty (Richmond, VA). African Americans face greater exposure to stress due to low socioeconomic status and poverty. In these communities, "discrimination and deprivation undermine individuals' ability to accumulate the social and material resources to mitigate the effects of stress" (Brondolo, 2018). In this city's African American community, where stress levels are high and consequential health concerns are prevalent, dance can be a remedy for managing stress and improving health (Hanna, 2006). DESIGN PROBLEM How can an intentionally designed interior environment support dance as a remedy for stress and its negative health effects? How can the design of this environment celebrate the culture of the African American community? METHODS Literature reviews on the relationship between space and dance will help inform design decisions. Studies of programmatic precedents will focus on spaces involving dance, healing, community engagement and cultural specificity. Studies of conceptual precedents that involve movement, rhythm and the body will take place. Rudolf Laban's notation system for studying movement in dance will be utilized to analyze the movements required of African dance, resulting in a more targeted design approach. A dancer with a background in African dance will serve as a research advisor. Interviews of African American dancers will be conducted to gain insight into the practice of dance and the needs of a dance space. PRELIMINARY RESULTS Research shows that dance reduces stress levels. Specifically, African dance, significantly decreases perceived stress and repeated practice can lead to overall stress reduction (West, J. et al). African dance's main purpose is to serve as an expression of the physical and psychological states of individuals, allowing for emotional release.(Welsh-Asante, 1996). Dance can be used to cope with stress by discharging repressed aggression, improving self-esteem and allowing for self expression . Dance also prevents stress through physical exercise (Hanna, 2006). Additionally, research from Steven Holl, Santiago Calatrava and other architectural masters discuss the relationships between dance and architecture. CONCLUSION The research will inform the design of a cultural dance center for the city's historically African American neighborhood. The interior design of this center will support African dance and culture, foster creativity, and encourage stress reduction. The design will also support the secondary programs of dance movement therapy, seminars, celebrations, community outreach, educational programs, and exhibitions.
