Book Supercomputers and VLSI the Effect of Large Scale Integration on Computer Architecture

Download or read book Supercomputers and VLSI the Effect of Large Scale Integration on Computer Architecture written by University of Washington. Dept. of Computer Science and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of VLSI technology to build supercomputers is analyzed in depth. The benefits of VLSI are reviewed, and the liabilities are explored thoroughly. The perimeter problem and the planarity problem are identified as being critical limits on architectural design. The CHiP architecture, a highly parallel computer designed with VLSI implementation in mind, is scrutinized in terms of how well it exploits the benefit fo VLSI and how well it avoids the liabilities. Not surprisingly, it does pretty well. (Author).

Book VLSI Architecture Past Present and Future

Download or read book VLSI Architecture Past Present and Future written by and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper examines the impact of VLSI technology on the evolution of computer architecture and projects the future of this evolution. We see that over the past 20 years, the increased density of VLSI chips was applied to close the gap between microprocessors and high-end CPUs. Today this gap is fully closed and adding devices to uniprocessors is well beyond the point of diminishing returns. To continue to convert the increasing density of VLSI to computer performance we see little alternative to building multicomputers. We sketch the architecture of a VLSI multicomputer constructed from c. 2009 processor-DRAM chips and outline some of the challenges involved in building such a system. We suggest that the software transition from sequential processors to such fine-grain multicomputers can be eased by using the multicomputer as the memory system of a conventional computer.

Book VLSI Systems and Computations

Download or read book VLSI Systems and Computations written by H.T. Kung and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The papers in this book were presented at the CMU Conference on VLSI Systems and Computations, held October 19-21, 1981 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The conference was organized by the Computer Science Department, Carnegie-Mellon University and was partially supported by the National Science Foundation and the Office of Naval Research. These proceedings focus on the theory and design of computational systems using VLSI. Until very recently, integrated-circuit research and development were concentrated in the device physics and fabrication design disciplines and in the integrated-circuit industry itself. Within the last few years, a community of researchers is growing to address issues closer to computer science: the relationship between computing structures and the physical structures that implement them; the specification and verification of computational procosses implemented in VLSI; the use of massively parallel computing made possible by VLSI; the design of special purpose computing architectures; and the changes in general-purpose computer architecture that VLSI makes possible. It is likely that the future exploitation of VLSI technology depends as much on structural and design innovations as on advances in fabrication technology. The book is divided into nine sections: - Invited Papers. Six distinguished researchers from industry and academia presented invited papers. - Models of Computation. The papers in this section deal with abstracting the properties of VLSI circuits into models that can be used to analyze the chip area, time or energy required for a particular computation.

Book VLSI Technology

Download or read book VLSI Technology written by Yasuo Tarui and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-12 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The origin of the development of integrated circuits up to VLSI is found in the invention of the transistor, which made it possible to achieve the ac tion of a vacuum tube in a semiconducting solid. The structure of the tran sistor can be constructed by a manufacturing technique such as the intro duction of a small amount of an impurity into a semiconductor and, in ad dition, most transistor characteristics can be improved by a reduction of dimensions. These are all important factors in the development. Actually, the microfabrication of the integrated circuit can be used for two purposes, namely to increase the integration density and to obtain an improved perfor mance, e. g. a high speed. When one of these two aims is pursued, the result generally satisfies both. We use the Engl ish translation "very large scale integration (VLSIl" for "Cho LSI" in Japanese. In the United States of America, however, similar technology is bei ng developed under the name "very hi gh speed integrated circuits (VHSIl". This also originated from the nature of the integrated circuit which satisfies both purposes. Fortunately, the Japanese word "Cho LSI" has a wider meani ng than VLSI, so it can be used ina broader area. However, VLSI has a larger industrial effect than VHSI.

Book Integrated Devices for Artificial Intelligence and VLSI

Download or read book Integrated Devices for Artificial Intelligence and VLSI written by Balwinder Raj and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2024-08-01 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With its in-depth exploration of the close connection between microelectronics, AI, and VLSI technology, this book offers valuable insights into the cutting-edge techniques and tools used in VLSI design automation, making it an essential resource for anyone seeking to stay ahead in the rapidly evolving field of VLSI design. Very large-scale integration (VLSI) is the inter-disciplinary science of utilizing advanced semiconductor technology to create various functions of computer system. This book addresses the close link of microelectronics and artificial intelligence (AI). By combining VLSI technology, a very powerful computer architecture confinement is possible. To overcome problems at different design stages, researchers introduced artificial intelligent (AI) techniques in VLSI design automation. AI techniques, such as knowledge-based and expert systems, first try to define the problem and then choose the best solution from the domain of possible solutions. These days, several CAD technologies, such as Synopsys and Mentor Graphics, are specifically created to increase the automation of VLSI design. When a task is completed using the appropriate tool, each stage of the task design produces outcomes that are more productive than typical. However, combining all of these tools into a single package offer has drawbacks. We can’t really use every outlook without sacrificing the efficiency and usefulness of our output. The researchers decided to include AI approaches into VLSI design automation in order to get around these obstacles. AI is one of the fastest growing tools in the world of technology and innovation that helps to make computers more reliable and easy to use. Artificial Intelligence in VLSI design has provided high-end and more feasible solutions to the difficulties faced by the VLSI industry. Physical design, RTL design, STA, etc. are some of the most in-demand courses to enter the VLSI industry. These courses help develop a better understanding of the many tools like Synopsis. With each new dawn, artificial intelligence in VLSI design is continually evolving, and new opportunities are being investigated.
