Book Retail Geography RLE Retailing and Distribution

Download or read book Retail Geography RLE Retailing and Distribution written by John Dawson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-10-02 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studies of the organisation and location of retailing activity have played a central role in the emergence of urban geography as a major area of academic study. Moreover, retailing is increasingly the focus of interdisciplinary research, with economists, sociologists, psychologists and marketing specialists all contributing. This book surveys and sets in context the wide range of research work that has recently been done on retailing. It concentrates on western industrial societies, particularly Britain and the USA, and considers empirical research, theory and theoretical applications. Topics covered include location analysis which is a traditional area of academic interest; consumer behaviour, which is of particular interest to psychologists, and retail organisation and government involvement, which will interest all those concerned, especially those actually involved in retail planning and management. This comprehensive book is the first substantial review of research in retail geography and suggests many future lines of research within the field. Originally published 1980.

Book The Routledge Companion to the History of Retailing

Download or read book The Routledge Companion to the History of Retailing written by Jon Stobart and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-11-08 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Retail history is a rich, cross-disciplinary field that demonstrates the centrality of retailing to many aspects of human experience, from the provisioning of everyday goods to the shaping of urban environments; from earning a living to the construction of identity. Over the last few decades, interest in the history of retail has increased greatly, spanning centuries, extending to all areas of the globe, and drawing on a range of disciplinary perspectives. By offering an up-to-date, comprehensive thematic, spatial and chronological coverage of the history of retailing, this Companion goes beyond traditional narratives that are too simplistic and Euro-centric and offers a vibrant survey of this field. It is divided into four broad sections: 1) Contexts, 2) Spaces and places, 3) People, processes and practices and 4) Geographical variations. Chapters are written in an analytical and synthetic manner, accessible to the general reader as well as challenging for specialists, and with an international perspective. This volume is an important resource to a wide range of readers, including marketing and management specialists, historians, geographers, economists, sociologists and urban planners.

Book Plastic Capitalism

Download or read book Plastic Capitalism written by Sean H. Vanatta and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2024-05-21 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How bankers created the modern consumer credit economy and destroyed financial stability in the process American households are awash in expensive credit card debt. But where did all this debt come from? In this history of the rise of postwar American finance, Sean H. Vanatta shows how bankers created our credit card economy and, with it, the indebted nation we know today. America’s consumer debt machine was not inevitable. In the years after World War II, state and federal regulations ensured that many Americans enjoyed safe banks and inexpensive credit. Bankers, though, grew restless amid restrictive rules that made profits scarce. They experimented with new services and new technologies. They settled on credit cards, and in the 1960s mailed out reams of high-interest plastic to build a debt industry from scratch. In the 1960s and ’70s consumers fought back, using federal and state policy to make credit cards safer and more affordable. But bankers found ways to work around local rules. Beginning in 1980, Citibank and its peers relocated their card plans to South Dakota and Delaware, states with the weakest consumer regulations, creating “on-shore” financial havens and drawing consumers into an exploitative credit economy over which they had little control. We live in the world these bankers made.

Book Shopping Centers

Download or read book Shopping Centers written by Peter Viereck and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are there potentials in central city revitalization? What role will the federal government play in determining future retail locational choices? Shopping center development has never been more popular-or more hazardous than it is today. Retail distribution in the United States has greater efficiency than anywhere else in the world, a tribute to the adaptability and rationalization of systems which have characterized the field. The pressures of the future, however, require greater exertion if they are to be adequately met. The industry drive to the new "middle markets" may change the face of small city America-or it may lead to a blind alley. As central cities, aided by EDA (Economic Development Administration) and UDAG (Urban Development Action Grant), gird up for revitalization in the face of reduced real buying power, these issues take on increased vigor. A whole new legal fabric is evolving in the development of major commercial facilities. Does it mark the path of the future-or is it an ineffectual last gasp effort to reshape the basic overwhelming trend lines of American life? How do we get a grasp on these parameters? Whether city planner, economic or marketing consultant, investor, or developer-much of our future depends on the answers. The authorities brought together for these specially sponsored papers are the best in the business-and provide key insights into this dynamic field. Demographics and consumer response that challenge marketing and planning professionals are also included.
