Book The Impact of Stock Index Futures Trading on Daily Returns Seasonality

Download or read book The Impact of Stock Index Futures Trading on Daily Returns Seasonality written by Michael D. McKenzie and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this article, we investigate the impact of the introduction of stock index futures trading on the daily returns seasonality of the underlying index for seven national markets. It has been previously argued that the introduction of futures trading should lead to reduced seasonality of mean returns, and generally our results support this conclusion. The impact of index futures introduction on return autocorrelations and volatility is also tested, and the evidence presented suggests that futures trading has no impact on the former, although a change in the seasonal for the latter was detected.

Download or read book Seasonality written by Jake Bernstein and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 1998-03-30 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: a groundbreaking look at trading the markets with one of the most important forecasting tools available . . . "If you've ever wondered about the validity of seasonals or how to trade them, buy this book now!" --Glen Larson, Genesis Data Services "Jake does it again. This time his extensive research really leaps out as he makes seasonal trading easy to understand and a very useful tool for any commodity trader." --Jeffrey H. Fox, Fox Investments. Is there a "holy grail" of price prediction? Traders have long been in pursuit of one, and while a handful of strategies, techniques, and methodologies have proven noteworthy, the search continues for the ultimate forecasting instrument --if one does indeed exist. The theory and methods of seasonality may well prove to be a step in the right direction to this goal. In this unique new book, a leading seasonal trading analyst examines seasonality in-depth, elucidating the concise principles, numerous advantages, and enormous potential that make it one of the most important --and effective --methods currently available for targeting futures price trends. Over the years, considerable attention has been paid to the effects of interest rates, money supply, earnings, inflation, and other key factors on stock and commodity prices. Yet, the immense impact of seasonal price tendencies has been either grossly underestimated or completely ignored. Often overlooked, but equally significant, seasonality is based on the assumption that seasonal influences cause biases in the movement of market prices. Among its many advantages, seasonality allows the trader to formulate objective decisions founded on a logical, verifiable, and operational methodology, creating a backdrop of probable market trends in most time frames and in most markets, and providing historically valid input for use as an adjunct to other analytical methods and timing indicators. The essence of seasonality is found in its lengthy history and statistically testable methodologies. However, seasonal correlations are not 100 percent foolproof. Using seasonal data to time the market involves an unavoidable degree of subjectivity --unless you have a firm grasp of seasonal timing concepts and techniques. Now, in the first resource devoted exclusively to the subject, Jake Bernstein gives you the foundation necessary to implement this powerful tool effectively and with confidence. Balancing theory and practice, Bernstein provides a thorough, real-world understanding of seasonal timing concepts and techniques. Along with results of his own extensive research, he integrates the work of numerous market analysts, such as W. D. Gann, Art Merrill, Burton Pugh, Samuel Benner, and Yale Hirsch, among others, to create a pragmatic and highly functional analytical framework. With his accessible, comprehensive coverage of significant concepts such as seasonal spread relationships, key dates, and cash tendencies, you'll be able to discern seasonal patterns in monthly and daily cash and futures data. Once the basics are firmly in place, Bernstein leads you step by step through the essential process of formulating a seasonal trading program that incorporates important timing strategies and risk management tools. An ideal overview for any trader, investor, or analyst, this lucidly written and clearly organized resource emphasizes the validity and significance of seasonality. Jake Bernstein has compiled a comprehensive guide to the effective use of seasonal concepts and methods in the futures markets. This is a major work that belongs on the shelves of all serious traders.

Book The Effect of Futures Trading on Cash Market Volatility

Download or read book The Effect of Futures Trading on Cash Market Volatility written by Gary Robinson and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The stock market crash of October 1987 and the growing importance of index arbitrage and portfolio insurance helped to focus the attention of academics, practitioners and regulators on the possibly destabilising role of equity index futures on the underlying cash market. Although theoretical evidence on this question is somewhat ambiguous, empirical evidence, relating particularly to US markets, has been less equivocal: typically, no significant effect of futures trading has been found. This paper presents an analysis of daily stock price volatility on the London Stock Exchange for the period 1980-93. The measure of volatility produced is appropriate, given the distribution of returns and the time-varying nature of stock price volatility, and changes in monetary policy regime. The impact of futures on stock price volatility is measured within an augmented ARCH framework and the principal result is striking: rather than increasing volatility, index futures contracts are found to have reduced volatility significantly by around 17%.

Book excerpt: This paper uses a data set consisting of a complete history of all transactions and quotes to examine intraday patterns in trading volume, volatility and the quoted bid-ask spread in the market for FTSE-100 index futures. We also document a number of regularities in the pattern of daily returns and volatility of the cash index. Finally, we document intraday patterns in the basis, i.e. the contemporaneous difference between the futures price and the underlying cash index level. In general, we find returns vary somewhat over the day, reflecting in particular the influence of the US market openings in early afternoon London-time. We find that, while both volume and volatility exhibit a U-shaped pattern over the day, movements in the spread tend if anything to follow the opposite pattern. As far as consistency with the best-known microstructure models is concerned, our results are more supportive of the Brock and Kleidon (1992) market closures model than the Admati and Pfleiderer (1988) noise- trading model.

Book New Evidence on the Monday Seasonal in Stock Returns

Download or read book New Evidence on the Monday Seasonal in Stock Returns written by Avraham Kamara and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Equity derivatives and the institutionalization of equity markets affect the Monday seasonal. The seasonal in the Samp;P 500 declines significantly over 1962-1993. This decline is positively related to the ratio of institutional to individual trading volume. In contrast, the seasonal for small stocks does not decline and is unaffected by institutional versus individual trading. Higher trading costs sustain the seasonal in small stocks, and unlike the Samp;P, these costs are not lower for institutions than for individuals. Samp;P futures minus spot returns exhibit a reverse seasonal. Informed traders use the less costly futures market to exploit the seasonal.

Download or read book Analysis of Selected Seasonality Effects in Market of Rubber Future Contracts Quoted on Tokyo Commodity Exchange written by Krzysztof Borowski and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The commodity market has been becoming one of the main popular segments of the financial markets among individual and institutional investors in recent years, due to downward trend on the stock exchanges. Likely to the equity market, the problem of anomalies in the commodities market is becoming an interesting phenomenon, particularly in the segment of the agricultural market. This paper tests the hypothesis of: monthly, daily, the day-of-the week, the first and the second half of monthly effects on the market of rubber futures, quoted in the period from 01.12.1981 to 31.03.2015. Calculations presented in this paper indicate the existence of monthly effect: in May and November, with the use of the average monthly rates of return and in February, March, April, June, July, August, October and December, when the daily average rates of return were implemented. The seasonal effects were also observed in the case of testing the statistical hypothesis for daily averaged rates of returns for different days of the month (15th), as well as for the daily average rates of return on various days of the week (Thursday). The seasonal effects were no registered for the daily average rates of return in the first and in the second half of a month.
