Book Institutional Change in Southeast Asia

Download or read book Institutional Change in Southeast Asia written by Fredrik Sjöholm and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Institutional Change in Southeast Asiaexamines the institutional changes taking place in, and challenges facing, the region since 1997. The book focuses on determinants to the adjustments and on implementations of the reforms. It also describes various differences in the reform process between countries in the region. Southeast Asia's economic development over the last decades has been impressive. Most of the region achieved consistently high growth rates accompanied by significant structural transformation and industrialization, poverty alleviation and improvements in their overall standard of living as indicated by such social indicators as greater longevity, more widespread delivery of basic education and lower infant mortality rates. However, the crisis that struck Southeast Asia in 1997 had severe economic, social and political consequences in the region. It also threw into doubt the future economic prosperity of the countries in Southeast Asia and raised intriguing questions about the quality of their institutions and their approach to economic development. Sjöholm and Tongzon argue that the economies of Southeast Asia need to reform their institutions if the previous rapid development is to continue. The institutional weaknesses have been addressed to different degrees and with different success in the affected countries. Against the backdrop of Southeast Asia's importance in the world economy, it is hardly possible to overestimate the need to understand this process of change.

Book COVID 19 from Health Education Economic to Science and Technology in South East Asia and India

Download or read book COVID 19 from Health Education Economic to Science and Technology in South East Asia and India written by Asep Bayu Dani and published by . This book was released on 2021-02-02 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A major crisis is happening in the world today. It all started in December 2019, when an outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by novel severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) began in Wuhan City, Hubei Province, China. The World Health Organization (WHO) declared the outbreak a public health emergency of international concern. Despite all preventive steps taken by government and health agencies, rising death tolls seem inevitable. The confines of social distancing have driven society toward a sudden and rapid change in all aspects of life, and we are forced to embrace this change as the new "normal". Research conducted in these uncertain times allows us to identify, and analyze the challenges to finding effective strategies and solutions. This book provides current theoretical perspectives, studies, practices, and innovations that will contribute to society during the COVID-19 pandemic, especially in Southeast Asia and India. The current work can be used as a reliable reference, as rapid circulation of credible information, transparent case identification, data sharing, unhindered communication, and peer-reviewed research are most needed during this period of uncertainty.

Book The East Asian High tech Drive

Download or read book The East Asian High tech Drive written by Yunpeng Zhu and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2006-04-26 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: East Asia has been an area of high economic growth for several decades. The East Asian High-Tech Drive argues that to maintain the growth momentum, the more advanced East Asian economies need to pay particular attention to policies designed to upgrade their industrial capabilities. The authors argue that effectively functioning institutions, predictable commercial policies, investments in human capital and infrastructure, openness and macroeconomic stability are essential for growth and technological development. Regarding the two lower income economies in the sample, Indonesia is found to have the smallest improvement in the skill intensity of its exports, while the Philippines has registered the slowest economic growth. For both countries, industrial upgrading issues are not as imperative as achieving or regaining rapid, labour-intensive growth as both recently experienced major political instabilities.

Book Technology Economic Growth and Crises in East Asia

Download or read book Technology Economic Growth and Crises in East Asia written by G. Chris Rodrigo and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2001 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This important book develops an evolutionary conception of growth in East Asia, in which technology, organizations and institutions interact and co-evolve to advance productivity. Episodic crises are seen as disruptions which bring to the fore structural and institutional flaws that need reform. The author begins with a thorough analysis of the neo-classical theory of technical change and shows that it fails to capture crucial aspects of the various learning processes involved. He goes on to develop a comprehensive framework for understanding technological progress. Productivity growth is seen as deriving from knowledge hard-coded in equipment and structures, and soft-coded in human skill, organizations and institutions that guide economic activity. The role of exports in promoting faster growth is also examined, as are the channels of technological capability acquisition. This book will be welcomed by academics, policymakers, students, government bodies and business people interested in East Asian growth and in understanding technological change in general.

Book Southeast Asia s Misunderstood Miracle

Download or read book Southeast Asia s Misunderstood Miracle written by Jomo K.s. and published by Westview Press. This book was released on 1997-07-31 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Southeast Asia's Misunderstood Miracle emphasizes the contribution of government intervention, especially selective industrial policy, to growth, structural change, and late industrialization in Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia. Although government intervention has certainly been abused for private gain, it has also been crucial for the sustained rapid growth and structural change experienced in the region. Similarly, Southeast Asian resource wealth may have weakened the imperative to industrialize in the region, but inferior government intervention probably accounts for the relatively less impressive industrial achievements of the three countries. The study also stresses the significant contribution of regional economic dynamics, especially the increased role of direct foreign investment from Japan and the first tier, newly industrializing economies of South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Singapore. Thus, the book qualifies, contradicts, and challenges some of the conclusions and policy recommendations of other works such as the World Bank's influential East Asian Miracle (1993), which suggested that other developing countries should seek to emulate the second tier Southeast Asian NICs rather than the first tier East Asian NIEs.
