Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: There is a large body of literature that emphasize a safe and orderly environment as a building block for a successful school. The power of disciplinary systems and interventions put into action has positively impacted instruction and decreased the amount of overall disciplinary referrals and infractions students have received within a school. This study reports the effects of a School-Wide Positive Behavior Support system (SWPBS) on (a) the overall discipline and (b) student academic growth of 32 middle schools within ten, Tennessee school systems. The researcher collected disciplinary data and student achievement data before conducting independent t-tests and Pearson's correlations. Data indicated that a SWPBS did not have statistically significant effect on the overall amount of discipline or on academic growth. Leadership styles, approaches, and philosophies were explored as contributing factors when striving to lower the number of discipline referrals and increase academic achievement. The results suggest that though a SWPBS might impact the number of discipline infractions and/or increase academic growth, it may not be the most significant factor.

The query was based on the disruptive methods students would use in order to circumvent basic rules and regulations within their learning communities. The old standard rule of teacher being in “charge of the classroom” with a mixture of a fear factor, (secretly diagnosed as respect) no longer was evident. President Bush’s introduction of the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) mandates was brilliant with ist idea of inclusivity, but near eliminated accountability for those able students. Teachers became the main target group of this experiment in the promotion of all students. They became, scapegoats, if you will, of a system that made them accountable, and left those who should have been accountable in meeting educational objectives: administration, and more so, the student. Teachers became overwhelmed with teaching objectives and a multitude of paperwork to facilitate this new structure of responsibility. Actual teaching was foregone under the weight of segmenting students into their proper groups, then find the time to discipline and ensure that all pass the required end-of-year examinations. The result of these initiatives was to the repeal of NCLB, and schools becoming big business, with the teacher benefiting less under a continual weight of professional servitude, and the standard--no voice.

Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: The researcher conducted an extensive quantitative case study analysis using archival test and survey data to answer the research questions: (1) "To what extent are achievement scores similar for students in a school-wide discipline program and their peers in an undefined discipline program?" (2) "To what extent are teacher, parent, and student attitudes similar for students in a school-wide discipline program and their peers in an undefined discipline program?" and (3) "To what extent other factors may impact student behavior?" The independent variable in the study was the school-wide discipline, the dependent variables were students' academic growth in reading, mathematics, and writing as measured by the North Carolina End-of-Grade Tests and Writing Tests for 1993-94 and 1997-98 school years. In addition, teacher, parent, and student survey data as measured by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School System (1993-94 and 1997-98) were also dependent variables. The research's findings indicated the academic performance of the students at the target school improved during the four years of the study. And that teacher, parent, and student attitudes about the target school being a safe and secure place were positive.

Over the years, the culture of discipline has changed dramatically. Transitioning from an abusive form of corporal punishment to a no-nonsense response, Zero Tolerance policies were adopted. As time went on, the reactive approach to discipline was implemented too harshly, and a proactive approach was chosen. In order to create quality learning environments and to promote student safety, many schools have placed a major emphasis on effectively managing and minimizing student discipline problems. In an effort to promote appropriate behaviors and reduce reactive discipline consequences, many schools have implemented programs such as School-wide Positive Behavior Supports (SWPBS) that are based on a restorative justice philosophy. The purpose of this study was to determine if a school-wide discipline plan based on restorative justice reduced suspensions over a 4-year period. A paired sample t-test was used to determine if there was a significant difference in suspension rates of 33 elementary students, between the academic year prior to implementation and the first, second, and third year of implementation. Through statistical analyzes, this researcher found that the first and third academic year of implementation showed higher suspension rates than the year prior to implementation. The second academic year of implementation showed similar suspension rates than the year prior to implementation. The results revealed the ineffectiveness of the school-wide discipline plan at the school selected for this study.

The education field is constantly changing to meet the needs of a wide variety of students. Traditionally, educators have dealt with problem behaviors in the classroom by using reactive disciplinary methods and relying on the conduct code. The purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of a School Wide Positive Behavior System (SWPBS) on office referrals and detentions. The study examined data from two consecutive school years, 2010-2011 and 2011-2012. It followed third grade students in 2010-2011 without a SWPBS system and the same students when they were in fourth grade in 2011-2012 with a SWPBS system in place for a full academic year. The purpose of this study was to determine if there would be a statistically significant decrease in the number of office referrals and detentions after the implementation of a SWPBS system. The hypotheses stated there would not be a significant difference in the number of referrals and the number of detentions.
