Book excerpt: "This paper uses a unique dataset from Denmark to investigate the impact of family characteristics in corporate decision making and the consequences of these decisions on firm performance. We focus on the decision to appoint either a family or external chief executive officer (CEO). The paper uses variation in CEO succession decisions that result from the gender of a departing CEO's firstborn child. This is a plausible instrumental variable (IV), as male first-child firms are more likely to pass on control to a family CEO than are female first-child firms, but the gender of the first child is unlikely to affect firms' outcomes. We find that family successions have a large negative causal impact on firm performance: operating profitability on assets falls by at least four percentage points around CEO transitions. Our IV estimates are significantly larger than those obtained using ordinary least squares. Furthermore, we show that family-CEO underperformance is particularly large in fast-growing industries, industries with highly skilled labor force and relatively large firms. Overall, our empirical results demonstrate that professional, non-family CEOs provide extremely valuable services to the organizations they head"--National Bureau of Economic Research web site.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship of firms with family ownership and their performance in Indonesia and further examine on how political connections affect this relationship. This study used 933 samples from 413 companies listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) in the period between 2014 and 2016. Using ordinary least square (OLS) regression, the results shows that firms without family ownership (non-family firms) have better performance than firms with family ownership (family firms) in Indonesia. Furthermore, the findings also show that the performance of family firms significantly improve when the firms are affiliated with political connections. Our findings imply that establishing political connections in family firms will increase the performance of the firms.

To chart these developments, we discuss core relational (network content, governance), and structural constructs. We identify recent work that has introduced nodal and contextual constructs; the former capture attributes that inhere in the entrepreneur or venture to explain regularities in the patterns of network change. Contextual constructs reflect higher-level characteristics of the environment that influence lower level processes. The resulting theoretical models upon which empirical studies build reflect how the field as a whole has become more rich and complex. Broadly, studies continue to either examine how networks develop over time or their consequences for entrepreneurial outcomes. With more studies examining how network ties are initiated, evolve or are culled, our review of work published in the past decade finds that there is now a greater balance across these two streams. The process-oriented studies inform how entrepreneurial networks arise that may in turn lead to successful milestones achievement including financing and venture growth. We conclude by proposing future areas of research that include exploring the malleability of networking competencies, reviving dormant ties, examining the role of team level network constructs in venture performance, and greater incorporation of contextual factors. We also encourage research designs that employ multiple methods in order to better capture the wide range of constructs being incorporated into current theoretical models of networks.

Book excerpt: We argue that changes in the inheritance system affect incentives leading to sibling rivalry among descendants and therefore have a material impact on family firm performance. Using South Korea's 1991 inheritance law reform that stipulates the equal distribution of a deceased person's property to descendants, we find that the performance and operating growth rate in family firms show significant enhancement compared with those of nonfamily firms. Moreover, the positive effects are greater for family firms that undergo a business succession with multiple sons and married daughters. Overall, our results suggest that changing to equal bequests of inheritance has a positive effect on firm value by providing better-aligned incentives to heirs in family firms. We conclude our paper by discussing the implications of our findings for current generations in family firms.

Book excerpt: This paper investigates the role of the family status of a company's top officer in managerial replacement decisions for a sample of 683 UK companies over the period 1992 to 1998. We report evidence that family firms are characterised by higher levels of board control, and weak internal governance in the form of independent company board structures. Consistent with a managerial entrenchment hypothesis, we find evidence that family CEOs are less likely to be removed from their position following poor performance than non-family CEOs. This relationship occurs even after controlling for the ownership of the company's top executive, suggesting that family status conveys additional power to the company's top officer in excess of that implied by their shareholding alone. Stock prices react favourably when companies announce that departure of a family CEO, but only when these directors are replaced by a non-family successor. We also report evidence of increases in operating performance following the departure of a family CEO, which are not witnessed following non-family CEO departures amongst our sample companies. Finally, we also find growth in company sales and employment following family CEO departures in excess of that witnessed following non-family CEO departures, indicating an untapped potential that family CEOs were unable to exploit prior to their departure. Overall, our results appear consistent with a managerial entrenchment hypothesis of the family status of a company's CEO, whereby the cash flows that shareholders expect to receive following their replacement are in excess of those anticipated under the family CEO.

They contrast between voluntary and forced departure and the succession of an insider versus an outsider. In particular, they contrast turnover in family and non-family firms. As pointed out by Kesner and Sebora (1994), CEO turnover is somewhat of a unique event given the nature and power associated with the job, the significant visibility of the position and the change that follows, yet it is a relatively rare event and the decision is made at the board level which often is made up of a majority of outsiders. Sacking a CEO and the succession decision are some of the most important decisions a board can make. Let's examine what we know about the antecedents and consequences of CEO turnover from a long tradition of research that dates back to the early 1960s and what we learn from HM.
