Download or read book The Impact of Parental Involvement Socioeconomic Status Academic Support and Gender on Adolescent Alcohol Use written by Connie Meza and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 45 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of parental involvement, socioeconomic status, academic support, and gender on adolescent alcohol use. Data was obtained from 2,799 adolescents ages 12-17 who participated in the 2011 California Health Interview Survey (CHIS). The independent variables utilized in this study were parental involvement, socioeconomic status, academic support, and gender. The dependent variable was adolescent alcohol use. The results of the study indicate that there is a correlation between parental involvement, socioeconomic status, academic support, and gender in predicting alcohol consumption amongst adolescents. The results revealed that being male, not having an adult around during after school hours, and the lack of academic support were significant predictors of adolescent alcohol use. Future studies should investigate different factors that may also have an influence on adolescent alcohol use. Furthermore, the prevalence of adolescent alcohol use is increasing rapidly in our society. Social workers and other professionals in the helping field should collaboratively work to help implement effective education, awareness, prevention, and intervention programs needed to address this social issue.

Book The Impact of Parental Involvement Socioeconomic Status and Gender on Academic Success Among Adolescents

Download or read book The Impact of Parental Involvement Socioeconomic Status and Gender on Academic Success Among Adolescents written by Araceli Orozco-Acosta and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 61 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study is to explore the factors that influence plans after high school among adolescents ages 12 to 17 participating in the California Health Interview Survey, 2003. This study examined the impact that factors such as parental involvement, socioeconomic status, and gender have on adolescents plans after high school. The sample consisted of 3,971 adolescents. Results support the positive relationship between parental involvement and plans to go to college/university among adolescents. Specifically, if the adolescent has an adult at home who believes they will be a success they are more likely to plan to attend a college or university. Poverty level was also a predictor of adolescents plans to go to college/university. Those adolescents living in the deepest poverty were more likely than those not in poverty to report they do not plan to go to college or university. Gender differences were also found; female adolescents are more likely to report they plan to go to college/university than males. Future research should focus on obtaining first hand data on adolescents who faced adversities and overcame these adversities to attain a College/University Degree.

Book The Effect of Socioeconomic Status Emotional Functioning Extracurricular Activities and Family Type on Alcohol Use Among Adolescents

Download or read book The Effect of Socioeconomic Status Emotional Functioning Extracurricular Activities and Family Type on Alcohol Use Among Adolescents written by Brenda Contreras and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between socioeconomic status, emotional functioning, extracurricular activities, and family type on alcohol use among adolescents. The following research is a quantitative study in which secondary data analysis research is used as a means of gathering information from the California Health Interview Survey (CHIS) using the 2014 Data Dictionary, Teen Survey. For this study, the researcher studied the data using descriptive statistic including frequency, mean, standard deviation, and Chi-square test, Simple logistic regression, and Multiple logistic regression. The findings in this research revealed that there is a significant relationship between gender, poverty level, emotional functioning and its affects on alcohol consumption amongst adolescents. Social work implications are that social workers should utilize the ecological systems theory to gain insight on the multidimensional risk factors associated with adolescent engagement of alcohol use. Suggestions also include collaborating with different support systems such as immediate families, extended families, school staff, coaches, mentors, counselors, religious affiliations, and community agencies to develop preventative measures, treatment programs and interventions for this population. Lastly, social workers will provide psychoeducation to youth and family members about the consequences of using alcohol and how the family and community members can work together to reduce accessibility and pressure to drink alcohol.

Book Adolescent Drinking and Family Life

Download or read book Adolescent Drinking and Family Life written by Geoff Lowe and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-12-29 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1993, Adolescent Drinking and Family Life portrays teenage drinking, not as a symptom of pathology, but as a perfectly normal developmental phase within the context of the home environment. Drinking is predominantly social behaviour and the family is seen as a major agent of socialization. The authors have therefore explored family dynamics and the influence which the home environment has upon adolescent drinking to come up with a new theoretical model. A major feature of this approach is the interaction of ideas from family life psychology and human geography. The authors present a typology of domestic regimes illustrated by case studies of boundary enforcement and transgression. The general theme of boundary transgression, applied here to both the psychosocial environment and built form, represents an interesting new theoretical perspective. The integration of these two fields is an innovation which should stimulate further interdisciplinary work in adolescence and addiction research. Adolescent Drinking and Family Life will be interesting to researchers and practitioners in adolescence, family dynamics, and alcohol as well as any social scientist with an interest in the link between behaviour and the home environment. This new approach had important implications for health education and for interventions concerned with adolescent alcohol use at the time. Today it can be read in its historical context.

Download or read book The Colour of Class written by Nicola Rollock and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-11-13 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do race and class intersect to shape the identities and experiences of Black middle-class parents and their children? What are Black middle-class parents’ strategies for supporting their children through school? What role do the educational histories of Black middle-class parents play in their decision-making about their children’s education? There is now an extensive body of research on the educational strategies of the white middle classes but a silence exists around the emergence of the Black middle classes and their experiences, priorities, and actions in relation to education. This book focuses on middle-class families of Black Caribbean heritage. Drawing on rich qualitative data from nearly 80 in-depth interviews with Black Caribbean middle-class parents, the internationally renowned contributors reveal how these parents attempt to navigate their children successfully through the school system, and defend them against low expectations and other manifestations of discrimination. Chapters identify when, how and to what extent parents deploy the financial, cultural and social resources available to them as professional, middle class individuals in support of their children’s academic success and emotional well-being. The book sheds light on the complex, and relatively neglected relations, between race, social class and education, and in addition, poses wider questions about the experiences of social mobility, and the intersection of race and class in forming the identity of the parents and their children. The Colour of Class: The educational strategies of the Black middle classes will appeal to undergraduates and postgraduates on education, sociology and social policy courses, as well as academics with an interest in Critical Race Theory and Bourdieu. The Colour of Class was awarded 2nd prize by the Society for Educational Studies: Book Prize 2016.

Book Clinical Handbook of Adolescent Addiction

Download or read book Clinical Handbook of Adolescent Addiction written by Richard Rosner and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2012-11-19 with total page 800 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since 1960, the burden of adolescent illness has shifted from the traditional causes of disease to the more behavior-related problems, such as drinking, smoking and drug abuse (nearly half of American adolescents have used an illicit drug sometime during their life). Instilling in adolescents the knowledge, skills, and values that foster physical and mental health will require substantial changes in the way health professionals work and the way they connect with families, schools, and community organizations. At the same time, the major textbooks on addiction medicine and addiction psychiatry devote relatively little attention to the special problems of diagnosing and treating adolescent addicts. Similarly, the major textbooks on general and child and adolescent psychiatry direct relatively little attention to the issues surrounding adolescent addiction. The Clinical Handbook of Adolescent Addiction is one response to the challenge of meeting the mental health needs and behavior-related problems of addicted teenagers. The work has been edited as an independent project by members of the American Society for Adolescent Psychiatry, the oldest professional organization of psychiatrists devoted solely to the mental health care and treatment of teenagers in the USA. The forensic psychiatry perspective permeates the entire book. It will help to produce health providers with a deep and sensitive understanding of the developmental needs and behavior-related problems of adolescents. The Clinical Handbook of Adolescent Addiction is a practical tool for all those who help adolescents: practitioners of family medicine, general psychiatrists, child/adolescent psychiatrists, adolescent psychiatrists, addiction psychiatrists, non-psychiatric physicians specializing in addiction medicine, forensic psychiatrists, psychologists, clinical social workers, mental health administrators, Court/Probation/ Parole/Correctional health workers. The book is organized in a user-friendly format so that readers can easily locate the chapters that provide the information that is required. In some instances, topics of special importance deliberately have been addressed in more than one chapter, to illuminate the topics from a variety of vantage points. One aim of the editors is to move the topic from being a specialist area to a generalist one by providing tools for generalist to use.

Book The Implications of Acculturation Parental Supervision and Socioeconomic Status on Alcohol Consumption Amongst Latino and Non Hispanic White Adolescents

Download or read book The Implications of Acculturation Parental Supervision and Socioeconomic Status on Alcohol Consumption Amongst Latino and Non Hispanic White Adolescents written by Barbara A. Martinez and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Impact of Acculturation, Parental Supervision, and Socioeconomic Status on Alcohol Consumption Amongst Latino and Non-Hispanic White Adolescents The purpose of this study was to explore the effects of acculturation, parental supervision, and socioeconomic status on alcohol consumption amongst Latino and non-Hispanic white adolescents ages 13-17. This study revealed that parental supervision was a significant factor in adolescent alcohol consumption amongst Latino and non-Hispanic white adolescents. Specifically, when an adult is around after school hours, adolescents are more likely to report they have never had a few sips of alcohol. Although this study found no significant correlations between acculturation and socioeconomic status amongst Latino and non-Hispanic white adolescents, some of the existing literature suggested otherwise. Future studies should also involve parents and family members to strengthen family connections. Family based prevention programs for Latino adolescents should account for acculturation to assist with creating positive relationships among Latino adolescents and their parents. Future studies can add to our understanding of the challenges facing Latino adolescents, as they acculturate to the United States.
