Book The Impact of One to one Computing Initiatives on Instructional Practices and Student Learning

Download or read book The Impact of One to one Computing Initiatives on Instructional Practices and Student Learning written by Patrick Nugent and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This qualitative research study examined the perceptions of elementary and secondary teachers and building level administrators regarding the impact of a one-to-one computing initiative on instructional practices and student learning. Data were collected from elementary and secondary teachers and building level administrators from four public school districts in southeastern Pennsylvania. This study incorporated the use of an electronic survey, two open-ended responses, and face-to-face interviews to garner data regarding the impact of the implementation of a one-to-one computing program. The findings of this study suggested that elementary and secondary teachers and building level administrators shared only some similarities in response to the survey questions. The study's results demonstrated that the instructional practices of teachers have been positively impacted by the implementation of the computing initiative. Teachers are now comfortable planning lessons that integrate the laptop into their classroom practice and, as a result, student computers are being utilized regularly for research, project-based and cooperative learning. The findings also revealed that teachers and administrators felt that student engagement and motivation had increased in the classroom as a result of the implementation of a one-to-one computing initiative. Building level administrators collectively reported that there was no evidence that student attendance increased or that student disciplinary issues decreased as a result of a one-to-one computing initiative. This study also acknowledged that ongoing, well-planned, systemic professional development that is collaborative and differentiated affected the success of a one-to-one computing initiative.

Book excerpt: This book takes a serious historical and international look at the "digital pencil" movement to equip every student with a computing device with wireless connection. Using an ecological perspective as an overarching framework, and drawing on their own studies and available literature that illuminate the issues related to one-to-one computing, the authors present well-reasoned discussions about a set of complex and critical issue facing policy makers, educators, students, parents, and the general public. The Digital Pencil addresses four key questions: Is the digital pencil a good idea? The authors analyze the costs and benefits of one-to-one computing programs through consideration of multiple indicators and examine the evaluation reports of various projects within their analytical framework to present a comprehensive summary of outcomes of one-to-one computing projects. What happens when each child has a networked computer? The authors analyze existing data with the goal of gaining insights and making suggestions and recommendations for policy makers, teachers, and parents. What should schools purchase or lease - is there an ideal device? These authors examine the relative advantages and disadvantages of different devices and implementation schemes. How do we know if one-to-one computing is making a difference? The authors review the evaluation plans of the various projects and propose a framework for comprehensive evaluation and research on one-to-one computing. This book is intended for researchers, school administrators, educational technology professionals, and policy makers in the U.S. and around the world, and as a supplemental text for advanced courses in education, technology, and technological innovation.

Book excerpt: The Flickering Mind, by National Magazine Award winner Todd Oppenheimer, is a landmark account of the failure of technology to improve our schools and a call for renewed emphasis on what really works. American education faces an unusual moment of crisis. For decades, our schools have been beaten down by a series of curriculum fads, empty crusades for reform, and stingy funding. Now education and political leaders have offered their biggest and most expensive promise ever—the miracle of computers and the Internet—at a cost of approximately $70 billion just during the decade of the 1990s. Computer technology has become so prevalent that it is transforming nearly every corner of the academic world, from our efforts to close the gap between rich and poor, to our hopes for school reform, to our basic methods of developing the human imagination. Technology is also recasting the relationships that schools strike with the business community, changing public beliefs about the demands of tomorrow’s working world, and reframing the nation’s systems for researching, testing, and evaluating achievement. All this change has led to a culture of the flickering mind, and a generation teetering between two possible futures. In one, youngsters have a chance to become confident masters of the tools of their day, to better address the problems of tomorrow. Alternatively, they can become victims of commercial novelties and narrow measures of ability, underscored by misplaced faith in standardized testing. At this point, America’s students can’t even make a fair choice. They are an increasingly distracted lot. Their ability to reason, to listen, to feel empathy, is quite literally flickering. Computers and their attendant technologies did not cause all these problems, but they are quietly accelerating them. In this authoritative and impassioned account of the state of education in America, Todd Oppenheimer shows why it does not have to be this way. Oppenheimer visited dozens of schools nationwide—public and private, urban and rural—to present the compelling tales that frame this book. He consulted with experts, read volumes of studies, and came to strong and persuasive conclusions: that the essentials of learning have been gradually forgotten and that they matter much more than the novelties of technology. He argues that every time we computerize a science class or shut down a music program to pay for new hardware, we lose sight of what our priority should be: “enlightened basics.” Broad in scope and investigative in treatment, The Flickering Mind will not only contribute to a vital public conversation about what our schools can and should be—it will define the debate.

Book Perceptions of the Impact of Quality Professional Development on the Sustainability of a One to one Computing Initiative at the High School Level

Download or read book Perceptions of the Impact of Quality Professional Development on the Sustainability of a One to one Computing Initiative at the High School Level written by Kerry Donna-Marie Bourne Morrison and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has been said that education is the key to success, and today’s youth are tomorrow’s human resources. This is the 21st century; and students, who will be the human resources of tomorrow, are being prepared for jobs that may not even exist today. Legislators, policy makers, and researchers have encouraged methods to ensure teachers deliver high quality instruction, including requiring that teachers complete specific training, possess a minimum level of content knowledge, and use curriculum materials and professional development resources available from schools and districts (Hill, Blazar, & Lynch, 2015). As a result, teachers need to be exposing students to lessons that are technologically enhanced as they prepare students for the future. This study is a qualitative analysis of a survey and interviews that seek to examine the impact of quality professional development and teacher exposure to technology on the sustainability of one-to-one computing initiatives. This study is supported by the following theories: the Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) framework and Bandura’s (1977) self-efficacy theory. This study discussed the impact of the TPACK framework and Bandura’s self-efficacy theory on the sustainability of a one-to one computing initiative. The key findings in this study were that content-driven professional development, clear expectations for technology use in classrooms, and the availability of school-based instructional coaches can impact the sustainability of a one-to-one computing initiative. As is defined by Bandura’s self-efficacy theory, teachers are more likely to implement technology in the classroom that can sustain a one-to-one computing initiative if they are confident in their ability to use technology. This study also discussed recommendations for practice that school districts can use as they sustain a one-to-one computing initiative.

Download or read book The Perceptions of Teachers Regarding the Effectiveness of 1 1 Computing Devices on Student Engagement and Learning written by Sandra Cadebes-Velarde and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 39 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examined the impact of 1:1 computing devices on student engagement and learning in English language arts and mathematics from the perspective of teachers. Interview data collected from 3 teachers in the same district were based on the following questions: 1) What are the positive outcomes of 1:1 computing device training on the instructional practices of teachers? 2) What are the effects of 1:1 computing devices on student engagement and academic achievement in the classroom? 3) What are the limitations of 1:1 computing devices and how may they be addressed? The analysis of the interview data suggests: 1) professional development and 1:1 computing device training positively affects the preparedness of teachers 2) 1:1 computing devices positively affect student engagement and academic achievement; and 3) school districts should consider providing programs such as Local Area Networks (LAN) to help teachers monitor student screens from their own desks. The last suggestion is based on one limitation. There is a tendency for some students to get distracted by websites that are not relevant to the lesson.

Book Impact of One to one Devices on Pedagogy and Teaching Practices at the Middle School Level

Download or read book Impact of One to one Devices on Pedagogy and Teaching Practices at the Middle School Level written by Jeffrey E. Smale and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This qualitative research study examined the perceptions of middle school teachers and administrators regarding the impact of one-to-one devices on pedagogical practices. In addition, the perceptions of factors that impact the implementation of one-to-one technology into classroom activities and instruction were also studied. The study was conducted in three middle schools in Pennsylvania currently implementing a one-to-one initiative in which every student is issued a personal computing device for use at school and outside of the school. Participants in the study included 57 teachers and five administrators who responded to a survey consisting of both Likert-scale and open-ended questions. Five teachers and three administrators also participated in an additional interview with the researcher. Results from the study indicated that teachers and administrators perceive that pedagogical practices have been positively impacted by one-to-one implementation. However, traditional pedagogical practices are still being widely used in classrooms, and devices are being used more to supplement than transform instruction. Teacher and administrator perceptions also differed in how one-to-one devices are impacting instruction. Factors that were found to positively impact one-to-one implementation included administrative support, student value of devices as a learning tool, clear expectations of student usage, and student training. The distractibility of the device, lack of student training, and time for professional development were factors that were perceived as challenges to implementation. Findings from the study showed that teachers and administrators recognize the value and potential of technology in education; however, the support structures that are essential to a disruptive innovation (e.g., professional development, stakeholder involvement and student training) have been underdeveloped.

This book was released on 2013 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examined the impact of the one-to-one laptop initiative on teacher perceptions of instructional delivery and student engagement in middle school mathematics. Teacher perceptions of the initiative vary. Several school districts in North Carolina have implemented the initiative and are examining the impact it has on teaching and learning. The one-to-one initiative has been an essential paradigm shift for several national and international schools. The learning environment of the one-to-one initiative immerses students in a curriculum that integrates technology in all subject areas. -- Mathematics instruction in the 21st century has changed from subject specific to a more authentic integrated mathematics. Technology literacy is a vital part of this change. -- Data for this study were gathered through the use of qualitative measures via an online survey. The survey was sent to middle school mathematics teachers in three rural school districts in North Carolina. The three school districts were in different phases of the implementation ranging from 1 year to 5 years. -- Analysis of the data indicated a moderate impact of the one-to-one initiative on teacher perceptions of instructional delivery and student engagement. Teachers were most satisfied with the variety of online resources and programs available for instruction. The concern with regards to student engagement was inappropriate Internet use of the laptop by students. However, if implemented effectively, the one-to-one laptop initiative has the potential to enhance student collaboration, exploration, and inquiry and provide more opportunities for students to engage in a variety of higher-order thinking skills and activities.

Book Teacher Concerns and Attitudes During the Adoption Phase of One to One Computing in Early College High Schools

Download or read book Teacher Concerns and Attitudes During the Adoption Phase of One to One Computing in Early College High Schools written by and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ubiquitous computing has opened new opportunities for teaching and learning, and is transforming school learning environments. The popularity of one-to-one computing has been increasing rapidly, with more and more schools adopting this initiative. However, studies on past one-to-one initiatives have raised concerns over the proper adoption of technology into classrooms. To ensure successful implementation of a change generating initiative like the computing initiative, schools should ensure buy-in and readiness of the stakeholders, especially the teachers. Understanding the teacher's beliefs and attitudes towards technology, and addressing the teacher concerns is a critical step in ensuring the successful implementation of technology integration. The purpose of this basic qualitative study is to understand the beliefs, attitudes and concerns of Early College High School teachers towards one-to-one computing, and their use of computers in classrooms during the early adoption phase of the one-to-one computing initiative. The study was guided by the following research questions: What prior experiences do the teachers bring to one-to-one computing? What are the teachers' beliefs, attitudes, and concerns towards one-to one computing? What support do the teachers need during the adoption phase of the computing initiative? Data were collected using in-depth interviews and a focus group, and data was analyzed using the constant comparative method. The data analysis revealed that while teachers had a positive attitude towards the one-to-one computing initiative and its impact on students, the pedagogical beliefs differed among them. Also, a number of teacher concerns surfaced related to hardware and software support, professional development, classroom management, communication, and personal anxieties. Some implications for practice include: need for developing a communication plan; restructuring of professional development to meet core curriculum technology standards and te.

Book Teachers Pedagogical Beliefs about Using Computing Devices in One to one Technology Initiative Schools

Download or read book Teachers Pedagogical Beliefs about Using Computing Devices in One to one Technology Initiative Schools written by Gary Steffensmeier and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using a qualitative multiple case study design, this study investigated the ways that teachers' pedagogical beliefs about learning: 1) affect students' access to and use of one-to-one technologies and 2) shape one-to-one learning environments. Results indicate that teachers' pedagogical beliefs are not a predictor of student access to computing devices, but do impact how students use the devices in the classroom. Also, teachers' use of technology resources reflects their pedagogical beliefs. Teachers in the study reported that the increased access to technology via a one-to-one program positively impacted the learning environment by: facilitating better communication with students; empowering students; providing better feedback to students; making the teachers' job easier; providing teachers and students with better access to resources; allowing more ways to differentiate student learning; developing 21st century technology skills; providing variety; and helping motivate students to learn. Teachers' perceived negative impacts of the one-to-one program centered on the difficulties of shifting to new classroom management methods that accommodate technology devices and the distractions associated with the computing devices. Teachers also reported that they need better professional development to successfully integrate technology into their classrooms. Future professional development for one-to-one programs should be directed towards developing student-centered pedagogies with a focus on collaboration and integration of technology into the educational curriculum.
