This study assesses the impact of HIV on the small enterprise sector in Harare, which employs a majority of women, through the perceptions of persons employed in this sector. It reports that small or micro-enterprises are perceived to have a relatively low incidence of HIV, because of the predominance of women working in the sector. Men are perceived to be at greater risk, on account of their perceived promiscuity, but the study finds that women are also affected through absenteeism and death. It concludes that there is a high level of awareness of HIV amongst these groups. However cultural barriers are making it dificult for women to protect themselves from the disease, in spite of the prevention strategies which many of these enterprises have in place.

If not carefully controlled, the epidemic could impede the country's progress including the evolution of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) which are integral to the success and growth of the economy. While some progress has been made in understanding the impact of HIV/AIDS on SMEs, there is still a lot to be learned-- especially about how SMEs are responding. This paper makes a contribution to this emerging research issue through a case study of how a single labour-intensive SME in the fast food industry in Cape Town has confronted HIV/AIDS in its workforce. The paper draws on detailed observations of how the labour-intensive firm in question responded to the endemic through a customised voluntary counselling and testing (VCT) intervention and then assisting sick staff to go on antiretroviral (ARV) treatment.

It looks at the situation at both macro and micro levels and emphasizes the need to react quickly and to institutionalize the response of education systems to the negative consequences of the pandemic. Drawing on studies of a few countries in sub-Saharan Africa, the first part of the book discusses the practicability of implementing a range of indicators for monitoring the impact of HIV/AIDS, specifically on the demand for supply, management, and quality of education at all levels. It underlines the difficulties of assessing and monitoring the impact on demand, supply, and quality in many of the worst affected countries in Africa. The second part focuses on the essential role that the education system has to play in preventing the expansion and mitigating the impact of the epidemic. A range of responses is developed, drawing on the experience of various national and international organizations. This part also presents an overview of the education system in several countries that have attempted programs to impart life skills to children and young people. It considers the problems of evaluating such programs in light of cost effectiveness. (Author/WFA).
