Book Advancing Formative Assessment in Every Classroom

Download or read book Advancing Formative Assessment in Every Classroom written by Connie M. Moss and published by ASCD. This book was released on 2019-05-13 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Formative assessment is one of the best ways to increase student learning and enhance teacher quality. But effective formative assessment is not part of most classrooms, largely because teachers misunderstand what it is and don't have the necessary skills to implement it. In the updated 2nd edition of this practical guide for school leaders, authors Connie M. Moss and Susan M. Brookhart define formative assessment as an active, continual process in which teachers and students work together—every day, every minute—to gather evidence of learning, always keeping in mind three guiding questions: Where am I going? Where am I now? What strategy or strategies can help me get to where I need to go? Chapters focus on the six interrelated elements of formative assessment: (1) shared learning targets and criteria for success, (2) feedback that feeds learning forward, (3) student self-assessment and peer assessment, (4) student goal setting, (5) strategic teacher questioning, and (6) student engagement in asking effective questions. Using specific examples based on their extensive work with teachers, the authors provide - Strategic talking points and conversation starters to address common misconceptions about formative assessment; - Practical classroom strategies to share with teachers that cultivate students as self-regulated, assessment-capable learners; - Ways to model the elements of formative assessment in conversations with teachers about their professional learning; - "What if" scenarios and advice for how to deal with them; and - Questions for reflection to gauge understanding and progress. As Moss and Brookhart emphasize, the goal is not to "do" formative assessment, but to embrace a major cultural change that moves away from teacher-led instruction to a partnership of intentional inquiry between student and teacher, with better teaching and learning as the outcome.

Book The Effects of Formative Assessment and Technology on Student Achievement

Download or read book The Effects of Formative Assessment and Technology on Student Achievement written by Gianna Bock and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 49 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reading comprehension is one area most children struggle with. There are many parts to reading comprehension and when one part is lacking it makes it difficult for the student to be successful in all the areas of comprehension. Students with disabilities are at more of a disadvantage when it comes to comprehension. Students with a disability are already struggling and need more support to do well. Educators need to find other ways to teach and assess their students to ensure they will show growth and make progress in reading comprehension. Formative assessment is a different type of assessment which allows for inquiry and investigation. Frequent formative assessment will allow students to play an active role in their learning process. Berkeley & Lindstrom discuss the new forms of technology which assess students by motivating them and helping to develop the principles of literary instruction. This study found both formative assessment and technology to play key roles in helping improve students reading comprehension.

Book Keeping Learning on Track

Download or read book Keeping Learning on Track written by Y. M. Thum and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In partnership with Joint School District 2 in Meridian, Idaho, this theory-driven study assessed the impact of Keeping Learning on Trackʼ (KLT"), a professional development program pioneered by Dylan Wiliam and his colleagues at the Educational Testing Service (ETS). A team of Northwest Evaluation Association" (NWEA") researchers surveyed teachers and students over two academic years (2012-13, 2013-14) to examine which elements of the program, and under what conditions, we saw the greatest impact on 1) the use of formative assessment instructional practices in the classroom and, 2) changes in student achievement measures in reading and mathematics. Our results were generally positive. The findings suggest that KLT influenced teacher practices and student engagement over time. Teacher and student survey responses report successful adoption of the five key formative assessment strategies. Additionally, participants reported positive evaluations of their KLT experience and cited sharing experiences with their peers in learning communities as the most helpful aspect of the program. There was little direct evidence that KLT impacted student achievement over the course of the study. But, as many researchers have observed, professional development programs may take more time to show discernible progress in terms of student achievement outcomes. Thus, it could be too early to see measurable gains in student achievement. NWEA plans to continue its partnership with Meridian and track student growth in subsequent years to explore this possibility. Lastly, various aspects of KLT implementation that were measured did not appear to influence our conclusions about KLT in Meridian. We hope our findings help Meridian and other partner districts assess the value of their investment in KLT and inform recommendations to improve the program and its delivery to improve student engagement and learning. The following are appended: (1) Tables and Figures; (2) Teacher, Teacher Leader, and Administrator Survey; and (3) Student Survey.

Download or read book Grading for Impact written by Tom Hierck and published by Corwin Press. This book was released on 2018-04-04 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aim for a target-based grading system and create stronger learning opportunities! Do you wish there was more clarity when it comes to measuring student progress and learning? What if there was a way to utilize grading and assessment to focus on learning rather than performance, and the process rather than the product? As grading, assessment, and reporting continue to be relevant topics of discussion, this book helps you create a functional plan to elevate and advance standards-based grading practices. Teachers and administrators will learn how to assess, grade, and report against specific learning targets rather than standards as a whole to make skill acquisition the highest priority. Grounded in application to provide focus and clarity, this book features: Real case studies of schools that have incorporated target-based assessment, feedback, grading, and reporting Practical examples to guide implementation Questions, checklists, illustrations, and audits of practice to showcase the work in action An accessible format and layout that support both immediate implementation and long-term goals Despite being a topic that generates emotion and resistance to change, target-based assessment builds the foundation for a learner-centered system that provides clear expectations and feedback for teachers, students, and parents. "Grading for Impact is a simple and straightforward guide to re-thinking grading based on mastery of specific skills and concepts rather than broadly-written standards. Real-world examples of teachers struggling with--and answering--the old questions are included: "How do we grade fairly and accurately?" and "How do we use grades as an instructional strategy?"" Joseph Staub, High School Teacher Downtown Magnets High School, CA "Most stakeholders agree that report cards aren’t enough to show what our students are learning in school, but changing the traditional grading system is a task that requires careful planning and challenging discussions. Grading for Impact shows educators how to start and plan the discussions that will result in genuine learning experiences for students." Ernie Rambo, Virtual Learning Community Coordinator Nevada National Board Professional Learning Institute

Book The Impact of the Measures of Academic Progress MAP Program on Student Reading Achievement

Download or read book The Impact of the Measures of Academic Progress MAP Program on Student Reading Achievement written by David S. Cordray and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 7 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most widely used commercially available systems incorporating benchmark assessment and training in differentiated instruction is the Northwest Evaluation Association's (NWEA) Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) program. The MAP program involves two components: (1) computer-adaptive assessments administered to students three to four times per year, and (2) teacher training and access to MAP resources on how to use data from these assessments to differentiate instruction. This report focuses on the program's impact after the second year of implementation, and seeks to answer the following questions on implementation fidelity and student outcomes: (1) Were MAP resources (training, consultation, web-based materials) delivered by NWEA and received and used by teachers as planned?; (2) Did MAP teachers apply differentiated instructional practices in their classes to a greater extent than their control counterparts?; (3) Did the MAP program (that is, training plus benchmark testing feedback) affect the reading achievement of grades 4 and 5 students after the second year of implementation, as measured by the Illinois Standards Achievement Test (ISAT) reading scale scores or the MAP composite test scores in reading and language use?; and (4) Were there variations in the impacts of the MAP intervention on grades 4 or 5 ISAT reading and MAP composite scores across subgroups of students after the second year of implementation? The study focused on grade 4 and 5 students in 32 public elementary schools across five districts in Illinois. The differential impact among low and high ability students at grade 4 suggests that the MAP program may have the greatest impact on low and high ability students.
