Book Arid Lands Water Evaluation and Management

Download or read book Arid Lands Water Evaluation and Management written by Robert Maliva and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-06-09 with total page 1068 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A large part of the global population lives in arid lands which have low rainfall and often lack the water required for sustainable population and economic growth. This book presents a comprehensive description of the hydrogeology and hydrologic processes at work in arid lands. It describes the techniques that can be used to assess and manage the water resources of these areas with an emphasis on groundwater resources, including recent advances in hydrologic evaluation and the differences between how aquifer systems behave in arid lands versus more humid areas. Water management techniques are described and summarized to show how a more comprehensive approach to water management is required in these areas, including the need to be aware of cultural sensitivities and conditions unique to many arid regions. The integration of existing resources with the addition of new water sources, such as desalination of brackish water and seawater, along with reusing treated wastewater, will be required to meet future water supply needs. Also, changing climatic conditions will force water management systems to be more robust so that future water supply demands can be met as droughts become more intense and rainfall events become more intense. A range of water management techniques are described and discussed in order to illustrate the methods for integrating these measures within the context of arid lands conditions.

Book Sustainability of Engineered Rivers In Arid Lands

Download or read book Sustainability of Engineered Rivers In Arid Lands written by Jurgen Schmandt and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2021-09-16 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This interdisciplinary volume examines how nine arid or semi-arid river basins with thriving irrigated agriculture are doing now and how they may change between now and mid-century. The rivers studied are the Colorado, Euphrates-Tigris, Jucar, Limarí, Murray-Darling, Nile, Rio Grande, São Francisco, and Yellow. Engineered dams and distribution networks brought large benefits to farmers and cities, but now the water systems face multiple challenges, above all climate change, reservoir siltation, and decreased water flows. Unchecked, they will see reduced food production and endanger the economic livelihood of basin populations. The authors suggest how to respond to these challenges without loss of food production, drinking water, or environmental health. The analysis of the political, hydrological, and environmental conditions within each basin gives policymakers, engineers, and researchers interested in the water/sustainability nexus a better understanding of engineered rivers in arid lands.

Book Water Resources in the Arid Realm

Download or read book Water Resources in the Arid Realm written by Clive Agnew and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-04-03 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1992, this book dispels some of the myths that surround water resource problems of arid lands and the notion that there are simple ‘once and for all’ solutions. Population growth, industrialization, environmental mismanagement and land degradation have led to droughts, poverty and famine with the result that the need for space, food and key natural resources such as water has become the most critical issue in global development. Nowhere is this crisis more apparent than in arid lands, where water resources provide the key to economic and environmental development. The authors argue that as the arid land environment is highly variable the key to success is flexibility. The book is divided into four sections, dealing with the geography of the arid realm; the water resource problems they face: the methods available for enhancing water supplies and finally, management of this resource. The book will be of use to undergraduate and postgraduate student and for those actively engaged in the development of arid land water resources.

Book Water Resources Management and Sustainability

Download or read book Water Resources Management and Sustainability written by Mohsen Sherif and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-03-15 with total page 443 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book will be of interest to researchers and practitioners in the field of hydrology, environmental engineering, agricultural engineering, earth sciences, and watershed and range sciences, as well as to those engaged in water resources planning, development and management in arid and semi-arid areas. Given the lack of literature on arid regions, this book not only provides an assessment of water resource management in arid regions but also addresses solutions, and it can also be an outstanding textbook on water resources management and sustainability for arid regions. This volume in the Water Science and Technology Library includes selected papers that have been presented and discussed during the International Water Resources Management and Sustainability: Solutions for Arid Regions, 22–-24 March 2022, Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The conference was organized by the National Water and Energy Center, UAE University, in collaboration with the South Australian Goyder Institute for Water Research, and the Department for Environment and Water, Government of South Australia. The conference attracted a large number of nationally and internationally well-known experts who have been at the forefront of water resources management and sustainability in arid and semi-arid regions. More than 55 countries, covering the five continents, were represented. The conference was designed to facilitate and encourage new perspectives on how science and innovative technologies can transform water management and sustainability in arid and semi-arid regions around the world. It addressed current challenges and priorities in water management and provided a forum to share knowledge, experiences, research, and discoveries.

Download or read book The Future of Arid Lands Revisited written by Charles F. Hutchinson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-12-07 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Future of Arid Lands, edited by Gilbert White and published in 1956, comprised papers delivered at the "International Arid Lands Meetings" held in New Mexico in 1955. At these meetings, experts considered the major issues then confronting the world’s arid lands and developed a research agenda to address these issues. This book reexamines this earlier work and explores changes in the science and management of arid lands over the past 50 years within their historical contexts.
