Book Farmer Education and Farm Efficiency

Download or read book Farmer Education and Farm Efficiency written by Dean T. Jamison and published by Johns Hopkins University Press. This book was released on 1982 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the relationship between the education farmers have received and their subsequent efficiency as farm operators. The concern is with the self-employed in agriculture, the small farmer. The study is concerned solely with ascertaining empirically the effect of schooling on agricultural efficiency and, when possible, the effect of access to information as measured by exposure to extension services. The study uses data from Korea, Malaysia, and Thailand; related findings from several other countries of Africa, Asia, and Latin America are reviewed. Surveys of individual farms provide the data used in the empirical analyses. Analyses from Thailand indicate that farmers of all educational levels are maximizing profits. However, more educated farmers do have higher levels of profits, which reflect the higher levels of productivity found in the production function analyses. Education has little effect on market efficiency. Higher levels of education and exposure to extension services increase the probabilities of using chemical fertilizers. The effects of education were much more likely to be positive in modernizing agricultural environments rather than in traditional ones.

Book World Development Report 1980

Download or read book World Development Report 1980 written by and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 1980 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Developing countries start the decade facing two major challenges: to continue the social and economic progress of the past 30 years in an international climate that looks less helpful; and to tackle the plight of the 800 million people living in absolute poverty, who have benefitted too little from past progress. This report examines some of the difficulties and prospects in both areas. One of its central themes is the importance of people in development. The first part of the report addresses the expected sluggish world economic growth as oil-importing countries reduce their current account deficits and adapt to higher energy costs. Domestic policies of developing countries will be crucial, and the fate of poor people in these countries will be decided largely by domestic opportunities and policies. The second part of the report describes the role of human development programs (in education, health, nutrition, and fertility reduction) and their related effects on productivity and population growth.

Book The Ulyanov Family

Download or read book The Ulyanov Family written by I. Baranov and published by . This book was released on 2005-01-01 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vladimir Ilyich Lenin (Ulyanov) has entered history as the continuer of the teaching of Marx. The authors of Lenin's biography legitimately assert that "one of the sources of the formation of Lenin's personality as a man and a revolutionary was the democratic atmosphere, quite progressive for the time, that reigned in the Ulyanov family." The authors of this book, staff members of the Ulyanovsk Branch of the Central Lenin Museum, give a brief account of what is known about the Simbirsk period (1869-87) in the life of the Ulyanovs, and examine some of the most important circumstances which were responsible for the development of Lenin's revolutionary world outlook.

Book The Face of the Fox

Download or read book The Face of the Fox written by Frederick O. Gearing and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-28 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Face of the Fox, an anthropological and sociological study of the Fox American Indians (the Mesquakie, their actual tribal name) who live just outside Tama, Iowa, Frederick Gearing puts a face on the peoples of this tribe. In doing so, Gearing particularly deals with the estrangement of the Fox Indians and the Westerners surrounding them. He defines the concept of estrangement as including feelings of contempt, indifference, and pity often leading to misplaced hurt and hate on both sides. Specifically, he states that when one is estranged, he is unable to relate because he cannot see enough to relate to, which is a type of social disconnect. Estrangement shackles both parties, leaving them unable to connect with one another.Finding this is more of a cognitive mental processing problem, Gearing proposes gaining control of the mind, believing the opposite of being estranged is to find a people believable and real. The way to do this is to educate each estranged group about the other and put a face on each group. Educating Westerners about the Fox people they live next to, Gearing describes their community, their social structure, their culture, their language and some of its many meanings, and their view of themselves and how they view their future.Attempting to end estrangement and engender endearment and understanding, The Face of the Fox will be of interest to anthropologists and sociologists focusing on the American Indian.
