This book was released on 2004 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What attracts students to a college--academics? recreational sports? the campus recreation center? If you selected all three answers, you are right. Most students choose a college or university for its academic merits, but another key factor in their decision is the recreational sports programs and facilities. Recreational sports are an important component to students' quality of life on campus and to a college's recruitment and retention of students. The National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association contracted Kerr-Downs Research Associates to conduct a nationwide research project to determine the value of recreational sport on college campuses. More than 2,600 students from 16 colleges participated in this study, making it the largest representative group of college students from multiple colleges ever studied with respect to the value of participation in recreational sports. This study examined the value and contributions of recreational sports to participants' lives and documented the buying power of participants in recreational sports. The first of its kind in research, The Value of Recreational Sports in Higher Education makes a strong the case for campus recreational sports programs and facilities that will support the mission of your college into the future.

Book Student Worker Satisfaction and Retention in Campus Recreation

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to investigate the job constructs influencing campus recreation undergraduate student workers' satisfaction and retention and how their job satisfaction relates to job retention. The job constructs measured against job satisfaction and retention were job embeddedness, perceived organizational support, perceived organizational prestige, and organizational commitment. An online survey was sent out for 14, four-year, public universities in two southeastern states. A total of 108 undergraduate student employees responded to the survey. Descriptive statistics and a correlation matrix were performed in order to analyze the data and the relationship between the variables. Three regressions were used to measure the significance of the variables relationship. This study's results suggest that those students who are more committed to the organization are more likely to be satisfied with their job. Additionally, those students who are more embedded in their job are more likely to return to their job.

This book was released on 2012 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this dissertation is to examine if the interplay of age and gender impact the level of influence a campus based student recreation center exerts on a student's decision to choose and remain at a college or university. This study is theoretically based in Tinto's Student Engagement Model 1975 and supported by later scholarly work. Data were collected at a single medium sized university in the Western United States using Check Box electronic survey distribution technology and a self-created instrument. Three hundred and sixty-seven completed surveys were analyzed using 2x2 Factorial Analysis of Variance. Results show that gender does not appear to be a factor, however, age does play a significant role. Recommendations for the profession and future research are provided.

Book A Descriptive Study

Download or read book A Descriptive Study written by Bryann Hoffman and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The purpose of this descriptive research was to create awareness and an understanding of how participation in campus recreation contributes to students’ wellness, and how students can create healthy lifestyles throughout and after their college experience. This study was designed to examine the benefits of participation in campus recreation for undergraduate and graduate students at the University of South Florida. This study investigates the dimensions of wellness in campus recreation and explains how the wellness components of campus recreation have the ability to benefit a student’s quality of life during their college years. Both quantitative and qualitative data were gathered and used to help determine the benefits of participating in campus recreation facilities, programs, and services. A random sample of students was chosen to participate in the NASPA Recreation and Wellness Benchmark used to gather data about campus recreation users and their attitudes and opinions on campus recreation at the University of South Florida. A purposeful, convenience sample of students participated in focus groups providing qualitative data. The data showed that students at USF receive benefits from participating in campus recreation; several questions stand out to show students attitudes, opinions, and beliefs about how and why participation in campus recreation is benefiting their wellness and quality of life. This study may leave a footprint for other growing universities in evaluating the importance for students and the benefits of campus recreation departments."--leaf ii.

Book The Role of Sports Clubs in University Recruitment and Retention

Download or read book The Role of Sports Clubs in University Recruitment and Retention written by Andrea Rose McClymont and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 77 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Opportunities for involvement on a college campus can have many positive effects on students. Additionally, opportunities for involvement can have positive implications for student recruitment and retention at a university. There are many ways for students to become involved during college through their campus recreation centers. Through these centers students can have the opportunity to participate in sport clubs. Although multiple studies have been conducted on the importance of student involvement, few studies focus specifically on student involvement in sport clubs. This study addressed six research questions: a) do freshmen student sport club participants have higher 1st term GPAs than non-participants; b) do freshmen student sport club participants have higher 2ndterm GPAs than non-participants; c) do freshmen student sport club participants complete more credit hours during their first term than non-participants; d) do freshmen student sport club participants complete more credit hour during their second term than non-participants; e) what role do sport clubs play in the recruitment of students to the university; and f) what role do sport clubs play in the retention of students at the university. The study sampled first-time, full-time freshmen students who were participants in sport clubs sponsored by the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Campus Recreation Center in the 2009-2010 and 2010-2011 school years. Quantitative data were collected for freshmen student sport club participants and a matched sample of non-participants. The researcher looked at the number of completed credit hours as well as GPA for the first and second terms for the two different groups of students. Other quantitative data were collected through an online survey instrument and qualitative data were collected through telephone interviews. The results of this study showed that, for a majority of students, participation in a sport club was not the main determinant for matriculation at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. However, results indicated that sport club participation appears to have a positive influence on retention for freshmen students during their first year.

Book More Than a Job The Perceived Outcomes of Campus Recreation Employees and Relevance to Professional Employment

Download or read book More Than a Job The Perceived Outcomes of Campus Recreation Employees and Relevance to Professional Employment written by Jeremy Martin Battjes and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As grant programs dwindle and students are needing to become less reliant on parents to help finance their education, employment while enrolled is shifting from a choice to a near requirement. Collegiate comprehensive recreation programs employ several hundred students annually. Employers must be intentional in creating positions that help meet their needs, but also serve as a co-curricular experience for the student, assisting them in preparation for experiences beyond graduation. This study explores the perceived outcomes of campus recreation employment and the relevance to professional employment. Student employees at a large university with a comprehensive collegiate campus recreation program reported their perceived skill enhancement based on their employment with campus recreation. Data were collected quantitatively and qualitatively. The quantitative data were collected via a paper and pencil survey, distributed and collected at in-service training meetings. All students, employed in December 2015 and January 2016, were invited to complete the survey. This data were analyzed through a comparison of mean scores, one way ANOVA, and independent samples t test. The qualitative data were collected through a series of focus groups. This data demonstrated additional motivation for pursuing employment and what skills they perceived enhancement in and where they would like to see more improvement. The data revealed that student employees did perceive enhancement in some skill areas, but there was opportunity for improvement in others. Students demonstrated a stronger perceived enhancement of skills related to social work skills than technical work skills. This response pattern held true across each employee area. A statistical significant difference was not found between length of employment, at two years, and skill enhancement. The results of the study demonstrate the need for intentional and purposeful employment experiences that not only complete the day to day functions of the job or unit, but provide learning opportunities that are co-curricular, supplementing the classroom experience.
