Book The Impact of Broad Based Black Economic Empowerment on Foreign Direct Investment Inflows Into South Africa

Download or read book The Impact of Broad Based Black Economic Empowerment on Foreign Direct Investment Inflows Into South Africa written by Valdir Vagner Veloso and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) has become the main source of development capital for emerging markets in the current globalised world. Previous researches have found that fiscal incentives' capability to attract FDI is very limited, while removal of policy restriction is a determinant in attracting FDI. At the same time, South Africa has embarked on a major transformation programme Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment which has as its main target the need to increase black people's participation in the economy and to reduce socio-economic inequality. In this context, this research attempts to evaluate the impact of the Broad-Based BEE programme on South Africa's capability to attract FDI. This quantitative research was done using quasi-experimental methodology, comparing FDI inflows into South Africa with that of other emerging countries of a similar level of development, such as Brazil, Mexico, Chile, Nigeria and Botswana, and against the African continent as a whole. The tests performed give an indication that Broad-Based BEE is indeed impacting on South Africa's capability to attract FDI, and also that South Africa is losing competitiveness in attracting FDI on the continent. Since the results cannot be generalised nor prove a causal relationship, the main purpose of this research is to enrich the discussion of how to attract more FDI inflows into South Africa, possibly through adjusting the Broad-Based BEE policies, which will contribute to building national competitiveness.

Book The Determinants of Foreign Direct Investment on the South African Economic Growth

Download or read book The Determinants of Foreign Direct Investment on the South African Economic Growth written by and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examines the economic sense in policies that promote or aim to attract more Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) by specifically focusing on the determinant of FDI and how they impact the economic growth of South Africa. The study empirically identifies and investigates the determinants of FDI on South African economic growth as well as FDI attraction and its correlation with economic growth over the period 1994 to 2010 through the utilization of Cointegration and Error-Correction Model to identify the variables in explaining FDI in South Africa. This study analysis trends and the determinants of FDI as well as their impact on the South African economy. FDI is seen as the means of providing the needed capital injection to stimulate growth in the host economy. FDI can as well result in increased employment rate, managerial skills and technological increase. Multinational Corporation (MNC) should agglomerate in such a way that is consistent with country specific externalities. There is somewhat weak evidence that FDI generates positive spillover effects to the host country. In instances where FDI generates positive productivity spillovers for domestic market economy, FDI subsidies and incentives should be warranted particularly where they have been proven to have a catalytic role in FDI attraction. The study also indicates a positive and significant impact of reform on FDI in South Africa. The study considers trade Openness, GOP per capita as well as the Cost of labour variables on explaining FDI inflows. All variables indicate correct signs and are statistically significant except for cost of labour. There is some mild evidence that labour cost impedes FD I inflows. The infrastructure levels as well as other variables are directly related to FDI. In its endeavour to attract FDI , the host country undertakes various policy incentives to attract foreign investors. All these outcomes have important implications for improving the national economy which can be helpful in the allocation of funds and resources much needed for FDI attraction. This study clearly emphasizes the role of policy in FDI attraction as well determining short-run and long-run growth in South Africa by firstly providing the macroeconomic background. Secondly, it reviews FDI literature on its determinants and related policies undertaken in South Africa. It further establishes a linear empirical relationship between these determinants, and variables to determine the direction of the causality as well as contribute to the debate on the relationship between FDI and growth through regression analysis. It assesses the growth implications of FDI in South Africa and the regional economic implications by subjecting FDI to Granger causality tests within the cointegration framework. The results suggest that in the host country, there exist a positive correlation between FDI and economic growth. In relation to other developing countries as well as the size of the economy, South Africa still receives low levels of FDI inflows with exception of 1997, 2001 and 2005. The major contributors are financial sector, mining and manufacturing sectors. One can conclude that the South African government should consider encouraging capital-intensive FDI through capacity building and further development of skilled labour force. The empirical analysis indicates that openness, the rate of exchange as well as the financial development and improved labour costs are important long run determinants of FDI . The study sets up further research that may be helpful in exposing the South African economy with greater FDI potential as well as indentify regional specific interventions needed to improve certain conditions to receive more FDI. The effects of trade liberalization imply that African countries require African specific solution. Policies that have been successful in other countries may not suggest that they equally successful in African countries.

Book Broad Based Black Economic Empowerment in South Africa

Download or read book Broad Based Black Economic Empowerment in South Africa written by Loyiso (Loy) Mbabane and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2011-01 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dr Loyiso Mbabane (Executive Dean) reviews the economic empowerment policies and strategies of the South African Government- post apartheid. A number of laws and policies had to be enacted by the post- apartheid government of Mandela and subsequent leaders in order to redress the racial and other imbalances that were deliberately perpertuated by successive colonial and apartheid regimes (from 1652 up to 1994). In this book the economic empowerment construct is analysed from an empirical point of view, using Human Capital Development as a framework. It is argued that in the long term the development of human capital (both at school; work and in society) holds a better chance of delivering the sustainable empowerment of the still largely poor and economically disempowered masses of black people (including women and youth). The BBBEE policies and strategies of the South African government (2003- 2007) are scrutinized against the international literature on human capital. A transformational leadership approach is then propagated as the most conducive one to deliver BBBEE, as opposed to erstwhile transactional empowerment which has benefitted only a few.

Book The Impact of Broad Based Black Economic Empowerment on the Financial Performance of Companies Listed on the JSE

Download or read book The Impact of Broad Based Black Economic Empowerment on the Financial Performance of Companies Listed on the JSE written by Ashley Mathura and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research is aimed at finding empirical evidence to support the relationship between Broad-based Black Economic Empowerment (BBBEE) compliance and the financial performance of South African companies on the JSE. An independent measure of the BEE score was obtained from the Empowerdex Top Empowerment Companies (TEC) ranking from 2004 to 2009. 14 sectors on the JSE were selected to ensure inclusion of all major industries in South Africa. A total of 209 companies were selected, and the multivariate exploratory technique of Cluster Analysis was used. The predictor variable of the company's BEE status was then compared to a number of financial performance indicators such as annual share price, price-tobook value ratio and the price-to-earnings ratio (i.e. the outcome variables). By standardising the variables of the BEE score and using Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR), the k-means Clustering method yielded four interpretable clusters with 15, 64, 95 and 35 companies respectively. The finding indicate that only in the case of the cluster of companies that increased it's BEE score, were all three profitability measures significantly different and, according to the means, in the direction of higher profitability. However, there were no significant differences in the results to support the proposition that low-BEE scores of companies had a negative impact on their profitability and their firm's value over time.
