Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study investigated the effect of leadership styles on employees' stress and wellbeing with a specific focus on commercial banks in Ghana. The researcher used a quantitative research approach and employed a descriptive and cross-sectional research design to address the research objectives and questions respectively. Using a survey design with a sample size of three hundred (300) conveniently chosen for the study, the researcher collected the data from permanent employees of five (5) commercial banks within the Accra and Tema metropolises of Ghana. The Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS version 21) software was used to analyse the data where descriptive statistics, correlation, and multiple regression were specified and evaluated. The findings revealed that both transformational and transactional leadership styles are actually practiced amongst commercial banks in Ghana with employees experiencing some levels of stress and wellbeing also. While a negative relationship was established between transformational leadership and employee stress, a positive relationship was found between transformational leadership and employee wellbeing. Meanwhile, transactional leadership was found to have a positive relationship with both employee stress and wellbeing. The study highlights and gives a compelling justification for investment into transformational and transactional leadership to minimize employee stress and enhance employee wellbeing which will in turn impact positively on employee performance and other organizational outcome.

Book Leadership Styles and Employees Job Performance

Download or read book Leadership Styles and Employees Job Performance written by Aziz Javed and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 590 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Leadership and followers' performance has always attracted organizational scholars' attention. Leadership is considered as one of the important factor, responsible for organizational and team's performance. Earlier studies mostly conducted in US and European countries and have mentioned a positive association between leadership and employees' job performance. Few authors have reported negative linkage between transactional leadership style and employees' performance. Most of these studies were conducted in public organizations. Here, we conducted this study in Pakistani work context to check the leadership effects on subordinates' task performance and organizational citizenship behaviors (OCBs). We also checked the possible mechanism involved in this leader-follower relationship. Some authors have checked organizational politics and organizational justice as possible underpinning mechanism, while we tested employees' self- and collective efficacy as one of the possible mechanism. Our direct hypothesized relationships were between two leadership styles (transactional and transformational) and employees' task performance, OCBs, self- and collective efficacy. Our results were partially similar to previous studies while partially different for direct relationships. Both transactional and transformational were found positively related to employees' task performance, OCBs, self- and collective efficacy. Transactional leadership was a stronger predictor of employees' task performance while transformational leadership proved a stronger predictor of employees' OCBs. Both employees' self- and collective efficacy proved to be mediators between both leadership styles (transactional and transformational) and employees' task performance and organizational citizenship behaviors. Self-efficacy proved a stronger mediator between transactional leadership and employees' task performance while collective efficacy was stronger mediator between transformational leadership and employees' OCBs.

This book was released on 2014 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While employee engagement is still a relatively new area of research, it has been found that engagement significantly predicts job satisfaction and employee commitment to the organization. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of leadership styles on employee engagement within an international bank with substantial operations in Kenya. The study specifically aimed to answer the following: What is the effect of leadership styles on the employee?s beliefs about the organization and their work conditions? What is the effect of leadership styles on the employee?s feelings about the organization and work commitment? and what is the effect of leadership styles on the employee?s organizational citizenship behaviour? The study employed a descriptive survey design. The target population for this study consisted of 683 employees from the bank?s various units in its Head Office in Nairobi. A quota of 30% was established for each stratum within the bank from the five strata of: Service Line, Technical Systems Support, I.T. Helpdesk, Network Support and Data Centre. The study used stratified random sampling design where the researcher selected 205 respondents. A questionnaire was used as a sole data collection tool to collect primary data. The Inferential statistical method used was correlation and the descriptive statistical methods involved measures of central tendency; that is the mean. Statistical Package for the Social Sciences software (SPSS) assisted in data analysis. A multivariate regression model was applied to determine the relative importance of each of the variables within the engagement of employees. This study found that respondents were valued as individuals to a great extent (by a mean score of 4.06 out of 5). This study?s findings also noted that respondents agreed that the organization treats its employees with respect and dignity to a great extent (by a mean score of 3.92 out of 5). Finally, this study also established that respondents diligently observed the work rules and the code of conduct of the organization to a great extent (by a mean score of 4.42 out of 5). The researcher therefore, based on these findings concludes, that leadership styles do influence the employee?s beliefs about the organization and their work conditions. This was determined through the managers taking a real interest in the well being of the employees, who felt motivated in their daily duties and this made it easy for employees to spend ample time with their managers which improved their performance. The study also concludes that leadership styles do affect the employee's feelings about the organization and work commitment about the organization and work commitment. The study finally concludes that leadership styles affect the employee?s organizational citizenship behaviour. This study recommends that there is a need to have an entrenched training program within the organization geared towards building on employee beliefs about the organization and their work conditions from within the organization. The study also recommends that managers should use the most appropriate and effective leadership style that facilitates collective responsibility and consultative decision making with all stakeholders within the organization. Lastly, this study recommends that managers should also consider adopting transformational leadership and authentic leadership styles which, from research, have been found to be the most engagement-friendly leadership styles.

Book Leadership Style Interpersonal and Institutional Trust and Engagement

Download or read book Leadership Style Interpersonal and Institutional Trust and Engagement written by Forbis Ahamed and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 606 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the recent years, substantial evidences of the impact of leaders' unprofessional behavior and ethical lapses have been documented. These types of failures include the destruction of some of the world's largest companies and the resultant loss in hundreds of billions of dollars in shareholder values. Creating a healthy and trustful work environment is crucial due to the plethora of overwhelming business scandals across the world. Leaders play a pivotal role in shaping such a conducive, trustworthy, and engaged work atmosphere. Little empirical evidence exists; however, about authentic leadership behavior and its subsequent impact on work behavior like trust and work engagement. To fill this gap, the present research examined these issues in the banking sector in Malaysia. Specifically, it investigated the relationships among leadership styles (authentic, transformational and transactional), interpersonal and institutional trust, and employee work engagement. Furthermore, the study examined the mediating effect of organizational trust in the role of perceived leadership styles of supervisors and employees' work engagement. Sample consisted of 395 employees recruited from four major banks (two Islamic and two conventional). Data were collected with the help of standardized tools. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) and other relevant statistical methods were used to analyze the data. As predicted, structural path diagrams showed that authentic leaders were perceived to be more trustful that contributed to employees' work engagement. The empirical test indicated that organizational trust played a significant mediating role between leadership styles and employees' work engagement. Although the study did not find certain direct paths as significant, the indirect paths or mediating roles were significant in the linkages of authentic and transformational leaderships with interpersonal and institutional trust as well as between these two trusts and work engagement. The model comparison and independent sample t-test further indicated that leaders in Islamic banks were perceived to be more authentic and trustworthy; subsequently, the employees were also more engaged in their job than their conventional counterparts. Finally, many alternative models were examined, and recommendations were made. Overall, this study is important because it helps to explain the overwhelming impact of authentic leadership factors on employees' work engagement, particularly, in generating a trusting relationship with the employees, which intermediates the relationship between authentic leadership style and components of work engagement. The finding should add to the leadership literature.

The results was mixed, some are positive and some are negative. In the past, most of the research have taken various leadership styles that are cited under different leadership theories. This study has selected leadership styles such as supportive, participative, servant, transactional and transformational leadership styles as independent variables that are assumed to have direct influence on employee job performance, which is the dependent variable. A survey self-rating scale questionnaire was developed using past literature to examine leadership styles and employee performance. A sample of 115 respondents were recruited using simple random probability sampling technique. The collected data was recorded and analysed using SPSS 22.0. The finding shows that only supportive and transformational leadership behaviour positively and significantly influences employee performance at workplace. We found the other three leadership behvaiour such as servant, participative and transactional leadership behaviours are not significant in influencing employee performance. Book Effects of Leadership Styles on Employee Performance

Download or read book Effects of Leadership Styles on Employee Performance written by Khalid Rasheed Memon and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Purpose: Leadership, being the most researched topic of all social sciences concepts is equally of great importance for the organizations as well as employees. Most of the researches conducted till now have focused Western Culture and Gender, whereas the East including China, Pakistan, India, Malaysia, Japan and others are still in vague, whereas they contribute a major share in world"s economy. Therefore, thorough literature review has been conducted to come across a new model based on integrated approach, exhibiting the relationship between Leadership Styles and Employee Performance through the mediating role of Culture and Gender while Communication playing the moderating role. Design/Methodology: The paper is based on theoretical underpinning. Viewpoint of Leadership, its styles focusing Transactional and Transformational Styles and impact on employee performance have been argued through in depth literature review and the relationships between different variables have been established accordingly. Findings: Effects of Leadership Styles on employee performance were found to have dissimilarity due to the mediating variables of culture and gender whereas communication was found to be one of the major ingredients of effective leadership style. Practical Implications/Limitations: Rational Relationships among variables have been deliberated through research findings of various authors to craft practicality of theoretical research while making it handy for practitioners and trainers. However, the presented model is to be tested through empirical research across the continents and various cultures. Originality/Value: Thorough and comprehensive literature review of the said relationships is the value creating and differentiating factor of this article. However, a potential contribution of this study could be the study of three variables; culture, gender and communication (mediating and moderating) instead of single variable study where most of the studies put in only one variable.
