Book Higher Education Stratification and Workforce Development

Download or read book Higher Education Stratification and Workforce Development written by Sheila Slaughter and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-11-17 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work analyses how political economic shifts contribute to competition within higher education systems in the US, EU, and Canada. The authors highlight competition for prestige and public and private subsidies, exploring the consequences of these processes through theoretical and empirical analyses. Accordingly, the work highlights topics that will be of interest to a wide range of audiences. Concepts addressed include stratification, privatization of formerly public subsidies, preference for “high tech” academic fields, and the vocationalization of the curriculum (i.e., Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics: [STEM] fields, selected professions, and business) rather than the liberal arts or the Humboldtian vision of the university. Across national contexts and analytic methods, authors analyze the growth of national policies that see universities as a sub set of economic development, casting universities as corporate research laboratories and education as central to job creation. Throughout the volume, the authors make the case that national and regional approaches to politics and markets result in different experiences of consequences of academic capitalism. While these shifts serve the interests of some institutions, others find themselves struggling to meet ever-greater expectations with stagnant or shrinking resource bases.

Download or read book ViV Adventures in Duality written by Rick Jordan and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2014-10-17 with total page 119 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The pieces of art and poetry within this book have been compiled over a series of years and have evolved over time. In fact, they are still evolving and may never be complete. They were pieced together in this book into one single presentation of possibilities. The aim of this book is to expand your mind. The method is my specific dance of creation, a sort of style all my own that combines both the lightest and darkest aspects of existence, rolls them into one, and in doing so, attempts to shatter our preconditioned concept of the superiority of one side of duality over the other. In this book, it’s the line dividing the two sides of duality that is glorified, nothing more and nothing less. This book is written in a kind of rap-rhyming zen, aimed at shattering the duality within. It does not use the same method of reaching the mind that normal poetry or prose uses. As you will see, the emphasis is on the beat and flow of the syllables and the way of the sounds, never minding all the rules. Ultimately, this book is meant to be an experience, not necessarily read in one sitting or even in order but picked up here and there whenever you feel you need a good dose of your duality shattered.

Book What is History and Other Late Unpublished Writings

Download or read book What is History and Other Late Unpublished Writings written by Eric Voegelin and published by University of Missouri Press. This book was released on 1990 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the most significant pieces of unpublished writing completed by Eric Voegelin during an important time of his career. Spanning the period from the early 1960s to the late 1970s, these selections supplement the body of work Voegelin published after the appearance of the first three volumes of Order and History in 1956 and 1957. The five texts included here are "What Is History?" "Anxiety and Reason," "The Eclipse of Reality," "The Moving Soul," and "The Beginning and the Beyond." In their introduction to the volume, Thomas A. Hollweck and Paul Caringella place these writings in their proper context and discuss the ways in which they reveal clues to the evolution of Voegelin's thought. In "What Is History?" Voegelin considers the development of a transcendent structure of history while simultaneously rejecting the notion that history can have a universal meaning. "Anxiety and Reason" focuses on Voegelin's critically important theory of historiogenesis, which links events in pragmatic history with legendary and mythical events leading back to the beginning of the cosmic order. In "The Eclipse of Reality," Voegelin presents a critique of modernity by analyzing the work of Sartre, Schiller, Comte, and others. "The Moving Soul"--a "thought experiment" inspired by a remark Henry Margenau makes in The Nature of Physical Reality--attempts to reformulate the connections between physics and myth. The most important of these essays is "Me Beginning and the Beyond." Here Voegelin meditates on the universality of experience formed by the tension of existence under God. Publication of these previously unpublished writings will enable scholars to trace the genesis of many of the concerns that occupied Voegelin during a period in which the conception of his main work was undergoing frequent and perhaps fundamental changes.

Book The Recurrence of the End Times

Download or read book The Recurrence of the End Times written by Michael J. Colebrook and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2022-06-02 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Recurrence of the End Times: Voegelin, Hegel, and the Stop-History Movements explores the deep connection between modern political ideologies and the secular eschatological hopes and dreams of a post-Christian society. Focusing primarily upon the thought of 20th century German émigré political scientist Eric Voegelin, the book argues that we cannot understand the globalized world in which we live unless we appreciate the lasting influence of the various "End of History" speculators—specifically, G.W.F Hegel, Alexandre Kojève, and Francis Fukuyama. Through a Voegelinian lens, he dissects the relationship between these three thinkers, also claiming that while Voegelin may have misunderstood Hegel, his critiques of the Hegelian approach to history offer fresh and important perspectives on the contemporary world. This makes a forceful argument that the idea of history as a teleological path, leading toward some goal—whether perfect harmony between nations, a technocratic utopia, a return to some romanticized idyllic “state of nature,” or what Kojève and Fukuyama called the “universal and homogenous State”—has vast, and perverse, implications for the trajectory of American foreign and domestic policy.

Book Effective Exhibit Interpretation and Design

Download or read book Effective Exhibit Interpretation and Design written by Tessa Bridal and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2013-10-25 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the American Alliance of Museums’ (AAM) Standing Professional Committees Council tells us “exhibitions are the public face of museums. The effective presentation of collections and information in exhibitions is an activity unique to museums, and it is through their exhibitions that the vast majority of people know museums.” Effective Exhibit Interpretation and Design examines the impact of an integrated approach to exhibit design and development on the effective creation and support of live interpretation of exhibit messages and institutional mission. Bridal argues that the interpreters who bring these exhibitions, an institution’s mission, collections, and stories to life and the forefront of a visitor’s attention are just as vital a part of an institution’s public face, and that neglecting to give live interpretation an equal seat at the table impoverishes the ultimate visitor experience. Eight institutions collaborated with the author in examining the outcomes of approaching exhibit and live interpretation design and development collaboratively, the challenges of adding interpretation to spaces and exhibits not designed for it, and the guiding practices they have put into place. These institutions were: Imagine It! The Children's Museum of Atlanta, Minnesota History Center, The Missouri History Museum, the Museum of Science and Industry, Chicago, National Children’s Museum, The National Museum of American History, The Science Museum of Minnesota and The Science Museum of Virginia. Information was also shared by the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis and the Monterey Bay Aquarium.

Book In the Presence of Each Other

Download or read book In the Presence of Each Other written by Johanna C. Kuyvenhoven and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2009-05-23 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There can be little doubt that pedagogical practices have increasingly become focused on reading and writing in childhood education. In the Presence of Each Other is a brilliant ethnography that examines the educational benefits of the use of oral storytelling in the classroom and the ways in which non-print literacy enhances children's overall language and communication capacities. Presenting a strong argument based on compelling evidence for the incorporation of oral practices in the classroom, Johanna Kuyvenhoven follows a group of children in grades four and five as they forge an inclusive learning environment that respects linguistic, social, and ethnic diversity by sharing stories out loud. She traces the positive effects that oral storytelling has on children's vocabularies, writing skills, as well as for problem-solving abilities and empathetic responses that are essential to learning across the disciplines. In the Presence of Each Other is a ground-breaking work not only for educators but also for anyone interested in the practice of storytelling.
