Book excerpt: Who is Allah? What does He ask of those who submit to His teachings? Pulitzer Prize-winner Jacke Miles gives us a deeply probing, revelatory portrait of the world’s second largest, fastest-growing and perhaps most tragically misunderstood religion. In doing so, Miles illuminates what is unique about Allah, His teachings, and His resolutely merciful temperament, and he thereby reveals that which is false, distorted, or simply absent from the popular conception of the heart of Islam. So, too, does Miles uncover the spiritual and scriptural continuity of the Islamic tradition with those of Judaism and Christianity, and the deep affinities among the three by setting passages from the Hebrew Bible, the New Testament, and the Qur’an side by side. In the spirit of his two previous books, God and Christ, and with his characteristic sensitivity, perspicacity and prodigious command of the subject, Miles calls for us all to read another’s scriptures with the same understanding and accommodating eye that we turn upon our own.

Book The Crucifixion and the Qur an

Download or read book The Crucifixion and the Qur an written by Todd Lawson and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2014-10-01 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first book to examine the controversial Qur'anic phrase which divides Christianity and Islam. According to the majority of modern Muslims and Christians, the Qur'an denies the crucifixion of Jesus, and with it, one of the most sacred beliefs of Christianity. However, it is only mentioned in one verse - 'They did not kill him and they did not crucify him, rather, it only appeared so to them' - and contrary to popular belief, its translation has been the subject of fierce debate among Muslims for centuries. This innovative work is the first book devoted to the issue, delving deeply into largely ignored Arabic sources, which suggest that the origins of the conventional translation may lie within the Christian Church. Arranged along historical lines, and covering various Muslim schools of thought, from Sunni to Sufi, "The Crucifixion and the Qur'an" unravels the crucial dispute that separates the World's two principal faiths.

Download or read book Jesus Image of God written by Ismail Ibadehin and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2023-12-22 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The creation of Adam is mention in the Bible in the book of Genesis, chapter 1, verse 26-27 and chapter 2, verses 7-8 and 15-25. "Then God said, "Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over... the heavens and... the earth... And the creation of Adam is mention in various chapter of the Quran like Surah Al-Baqarah, verses 30-39, "And [mention, O Muhammad], when your Lord said to the angels, "Indeed, I will make upon the earth a successive authority." After reading the Bible and the Quran, I have come to the understanding that the heavenly language might not be the same as the earthly language, in a similar way that the human language is not the same as a computer machine programming language. So, creating man in the image of God, might not necessarily look like Him, but might means to have a distinctive quality of God that all other creations lack. The Quran hint us in Surah Al-Imran (Chapter 3), verse 59: "Indeed, the likeness of Jesus with God is as the likeness of Adam. He created him from dust, then He said to him, 'Be, ' and he was." So, for us to clearly understand the heavenly meaning of "Image", we need to study Adam and Jesus, and I have used both religious text "Bible and Quran" to expound this in detail. Quran Chapter 5 Verse 110, and Chapter 3 Verse 49 gave some concise qualities that are peculiar to Jesus, and the only being that we could link these qualities to is Adam, prior to is transgression. This verse of Chapter 5 of the Quran summaries the top-notch qualities that no other human being can attain here on earth. These qualities are extracted from chapter 5 verse 110, and chapter 3 verse 49 of the Holy Quran and they include the following: - God supported Jesus with the Holy Spirit - Jesus spoke to the people from the crib, and in maturity - God Himself taught Jesus the Scripture and wisdom - He created a living bird - He spiritually healed the sick; the blind and the leprous - He revived the dead - Enemies were restrained from harming him - He has the ability to inform people what they eat and store in their homes While some of the qualities he possesses according to the Bible are: - He has the ability to turn water into wine - He spiritually healed the sick; the blind and the leprous - He revived the dead - He cast out devil - He walks on water - He calms a storm These are features that does not conform to the fundamental laws and principles of our nature, or counter the natural prescription of nature and is regarded as a miracle. Just to reiterate, being created in God's image as stated in Genesis 1:26, might not necessarily means to look like Him, but rather might imply possessing a unique property of His that all other creations lack. I conceptualize that some heavenly words do not literally means the same thing as we understand, in a similar way that human word do not necessarily have the same meaning as computer language. Let me sight two "words", and see the difference in meaning between a human and a computer machine (cyborg, robot) Two normal human words that means something different in machine language: Human Language: - PUSH (verb): exert force on (someone or something) in order to move them away from oneself. Example; "she pushed her glass towards him" Machine Language: - PUSH: This word means to store a value on the top of a stack, which is a data structure that follows the last-in first-out (LIFO) principle. For example, PUSH R1 means to store the contents of register R1 on the top of the stack. Human Language: - CALL: a cry made as a summons or to attract someone's attention. "Did you call me?" Machine Language: - CALL: This word means to transfer the control of the program to a subroutine, which is a sequence of instructions that performs a specific task.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding Islam's sacred text is integral to understanding your Muslim neighbor Cross-cultural missionary and scholar Matthew Aaron Bennett blends the insights of Islamic believers, secular Qur'an scholars, and missionaries to Muslims, making The Qur'an and the Christian like no other resource for Christian ministry to Muslims. Combining these perspectives in one guide better equips Christians to communicate the biblical gospel to friends and neighbors who are adherents to Islam--both in and out of majority-Muslim cultures. The Qur'an and the Christian addresses issues both simple and profound, such as: 1. How the Qur'an came to be, including Muhammed and the Qur'an's textual precursors 2. The major themes of the Qur'an and how these shape the practice of Islam 3. The presence of Bible characters, Jews, and Christians in the Qur'anic text 4. Whether and how a Christian should read the Qur'an 5. Avoiding miscommunication with Muslims when the Qur'an and Christian teaching seem to overlap This book will help Christians learn how to explore Islamic faith with missiological wisdom and biblical precision. The Qur'an and the Christian will give believers the insight to deepen friendships, promote understanding, and clarify the biblical gospel among Muslim friends and neighbors.

Book excerpt: To my earthly father, my only worth was through my death. But God saw me so differently that, at first, I could barely comprehend it. Esther Ahmad thought she knew the way to earn her Muslim father’s love. She raised her hand for the suicide mission, her martyrdom guaranteeing her family a place in heaven. But God had a different mission for Esther—a journey out of Pakistan, from despair to hope, from shame to purity, and from Allah’s wrath to a Father’s love. In Unveiled, Esther examines a world in which women have no rights, no worth, no voice, and she shows how the treatment of Muslim women is linked directly to Islamic teachings. With vivid personal stories, she lays out the lies of the Qur’an against the truth she found in the Bible. This is no academic comparison but a question of life or death: What is a woman worth?

Book God A Biography

Download or read book God A Biography written by Jack Miles and published by Vintage. This book was released on 1996-03-19 with total page 465 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: WINNER OF THE PULITZER PRIZE What sort of "person" is God? What is his "life story"? Is it possible to approach him not as an object of religious reverence, but as the protagonist of the world's greatest book—as a character who possesses all the depths, contradictions, and abiguities of a Hamlet? This is the task that Jack Miles—a former Jesuit trained in religious studies and Near Eastern languages—accomplishes with such brilliance and originality in God: A Biography. Using the Hebrew Bible as his text, Miles shows us a God who evolves through his relationship with man, the image who in time becomes his rival. Here is the Creator who nearly destroys his chief creation; the bloodthirsty warrior and the protector of the downtrodden; the lawless law-giver; the scourge and the penitent. Profoundly learned, stylishly written, the resulting work illuminates God and man alike and returns us to the Bible with a sense of discovery and wonder.
